OK, first of all, it´s only a rumor, not official.
Second, it all points out for it too be true.
Third, it will start with handhelds, not home consoles (PS4 and Xbox 720...my guess...2012)

Nvidia just announced that they just won a contract with Nintendo for the next gen DS.
It will use the CPU ARM Cortex and GPU Geforce 9 :-)wow:)

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/new...a-wins-contract-for-next-gen-nintendo-ds.aspx

The next gen PSP will use PowerVR SGX543 graphics

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/new...-20102c-features-powervr-sgx543-graphics.aspx

So, if it´s true, not only will it be the most powerful console Nintendo ever made, but, both portables will be more powerful than the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.
And then, there is the rumor that Microsoft will release an update 360 next year (better CPU and GPU).
Sure, it was already debunked by Microsoft, but then again, everything is debunked in the video game business until official announcement (look at the PSPGO).

So, will it happen?
Does next year marks the begining of next gen?

The next gen wont start until Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo roll out new home consoles. Handhelds, no matter how technologically advanced wont supplant the console anytime soon.

The chip is launching in 2010, not a new DS.

Like i said, it´s only a rumor, but that´s not what the 2nd article states:

The Battle Royal for handheld gaming 2010
Apple iPhone 3G s / 4G = ARM Cortex + PowerVR SGX
HTC = ARM Cortex + PowerVR
Microsoft Zune HD = ARM11 + GeForce 6
Nintendo DS2 = ARM Cortex + GeForce 9
Nokia platform = ARM11 only
Palm Pre 2 = ARM Cortex + PowerVR SGX
RIM BlackBerry = ARM9 only
Samsung = ARM Cortex + PowerVR SGX
Sony PSP2 = ARM ? + PowerVR SGX

and i´ve already read the same rumor in other places.

I wouldn't be surprised to see next generation handhelds by 2010/2011. The DS and PSP are almost 5 years old already and Nintendo in a typical fashion replaced the GBC and GBA with their successors three years after launch.

Microsoft is doing their Natal thing and PS3 graphics are still awesome, not to mention there getting their own motion controller thingy. I'd say Next Gen won't come next year.

Yeah there's still a ton of things to do with all three platforms. I don't think we'll get next gen until 2011 or 2012 and when we do I'm sure Microsoft will jump first.

There will be no next gen systems in 2010. Dont expect anything till maybe at least 2012

Yeah, with Natal dropping next year, I highly doubt we'll get the announcement of a new system next year. Sony probably won't announce anything either their console still has the most power and will probably be the last to drop a new console. I could see Nintendo announcing a new system though. It'd be great if they had a console that could compete powerwise with the 360 and PS3 for the "hardcore" gamers, keep producing casual stuff for the Wii owners, then give your "hardcore" gamers a great system with all your great franchises looking better than ever.

Nintendo will probably launch a system around the same time as Sony. I can see them milking the Wii for all it's worth, and why shouldn't they?

Yeah, we won't be hearing about new consoles for a while. Microsoft and Sony adopted motion control tech specifically so they could extend the lifespan of the current generation. Although I will hazzard a guess and say that if Natal is a rousing success then we'll probably hear about new hardware sooner rather than later. From Microsoft at least.

Guys, IH is talking about chips, not actual consoles next year. BTW, my guess is 2012 or 2013

Yeah, Sony has said from the beginning that they were with the PS3 for the long term just like they were with the PS1 (which was supported for 11 years) and PS2 (which is still being supported 9 years after release). I honestly don't expect Sony to announce anything until 2011 and release a new console until 2012/2013.

Microsoft on the other hand was more likely willing to release a new Xbox in the 2010 time frame so they could be the first once again, but with the changes in the video game industry along with their own blunders from the 360 launch (rushed hardware), changed those to where they too are now supporting the 360 long term.

Nintendo will probably launch a system around the same time as Sony. I can see them milking the Wii for all it's worth, and why shouldn't they?
I think Nintendo is going to be the first to launch a new system because of the lack of graphical power the Wii has. I'm thinking that we'll see a new Nintendo system in 2011.

I think Microsoft will be first as their system is the oldest. Then Sony and Nintendo around the same time, probably Nintendo first, then Sony a bit later.

No way. Microsoft spent and is spending way too much to just abandon the Xbox 360. That's why they're developing Project Natal to expand the life span of the Xbox 360 because their original goal of coming out first was just no longer feasible. And their year head start has essentially equated to nothing, the Wii has passed them, the PS3 is expected to pass them, and they got rushed and unreliable hardware as a result. All of that for 3rd place. I'm thinking that they are actually going to take their time and produce a much more reliable product instead of coming out first for no reason.

Nintendo is definitely coming out first. They set up the Wii to where there just is no real way to expand it's life span like Microsoft is doing with the Xbox 360 (Project Natal) and the PlayStation 3 (the PlayStation Motion Controller and an excellent first party library). Nintendo is also spending a lot of money on their R&D lately meaning something is up in regards to both the successors of the Wii and Nintendo DS.

You are wrong on the "coming out first for no reason", because there was a reason, a damn big one....brand recognition.
Outside the US, almost on one knew what the Xbox was.
For many countries, the Xbox 360 is Microsoft´s 1st generation, a new console brand all together.
How could you go against Sony and Nintendo with that?
So, the 1st year was extremely important, and no one could expect for it to sell more than it did, because, once again, it was an unknown console in a lot of places.
And no one can take away the fact that the 360 is a gigantic sucess, even if it does end on 3rd place, because they got recognition and showed that the Playstation brand is not the boogeyman.
More even because it had a lot of hardware problems, and it still sold.

As for everyone expects the PS3 to pass the 360......that´s not true.
It might happen, sure, the PS3 is a great console, with amazing games, but it will not happen before the end of 2010, so, it might not happen at all.
The diference between the 360 and the PS3 is 7 millions, which means that, even of the PS3 sells 10 millions during 2010, the 360 only needs to sell 4 million to kept the 2nd place.
What everyone is expecting is for the PS3 to pass the 360 in Europe, not overrall.
Besides, people are reading too much on the subject.
It was expected that the PS3 surpass the 360 after the price cut, and it was only 2 months ago, so, let´s not open the champaign just yet, at least, wait until Q4 2010.
I´m glad the PS3 is outselling the 360, and i hope it continues in 2010, because Microsoft needs to open their eyes for the fact that they can´t live on Halo alone.

As for Natal and the "Sony wand", i don´t see it as something to expand the consoles life span, because, at heart, they are peripherals, so, they can easily jump to the next gen.
The thing is, both companies came out with their own motion controllers, and they are not willing to wait for the next gen to release them.
In fact, i can easily picture the next Xbox coming out in 2011....but more on that later....

I don´t know if Nintendo is coming out first...
Right after E3 09, when asked about the Wii HD, Satoru Iwata said that they had to plans to do it.
Sure, one can say, in the video game industry, everyone say that there is no plans until official announcement, but, in this case, i believe he was telling the truth.
I see no reason to make the Wii HD (or Wii 2 or whatever), because their target audience, the majority of people that buy the Wii, don´t care for a minute about HD, they care about the thing that sold the Wii in the first place, motion control.
Of course, the Wii HD will come out sooner or later, but i can´t really see it next year.
Besides, the Wii and the DS are selling like hot cakes, so, by that, there really is not point in releasing the next gen of neither.
We will not see the Wii HD and the DS 2 next year, that´s almost a certainty.
So, my guess will be on the DS 2, because of, not only the PSP2 but also the iPhone.

As for the PSP 2, i believe it will be coming out in 2010, i´m 90% sure of it.
Not only i´ve read it, but i´ve read that the PSP-4000 will be released in 2010 (which, in my understanding, is the codename for the PSP2).
Besides, for all i know and read, the PSP-Go is a huge failure, which was totally expected, that´s just a ridiculous product (doesn´t do nothing that the PSP 3000 doesn´t do, it´s way more expansive, and doesn´t have a UMD, which no one can´t really blame retailers for boycotting it).

As for home consoles, there is a huge possibility that the next Xbox will be released first once again, because, by sheer logic, it might come out in 2011 (of course that the Wii HD is a big enigma because it can come out in 2010 or 2011).
And that logic has a name...HALO.

We had 2 Halo games this year (Wars and ODST), 1 game next year (Reach) and it´s positive that there will be another one in 2011.
That game in 2011 will be Halo 4, and the return of Master Chief.
Now, there is the rumor that Halo 4 might be being made by Gearbox, but the deal is, in 2008, i´ve read that Halo 4 was being made, would be the return of Master Chief (of course) and would be, just like Halo: Combat Evolved, a launch title for the next gen.
Now, why 2011?
Because 2011 is the 10th anniversary of Halo, and it´s almost certain that Microsoft will not forget that (that´s why a new Halo by then is almost certain).
Who better to mark the 10th anniversary of Halo than the return of Master Chief, Halo 4?
So, the question is, will Halo 4 be indeed a launch title or not?

Whatever happens, next gen will be amazing, because then worst looking game will look like Crysis.

I forgot about the PS4.

The PS4 will not be released before the end of the PS2.
There is no way Sony will have 3 home consoles on the market.
So, my guess is that we will see PS2 downloadable games in 2010, with the demise of the console either later next year or early 2011.
So, the PS4 will be released, the sooner, in 2012.

More rumors, this time, about the Wii 2

We've just received some exclusive news and specs on the Wii 2 via Logic-Sunrise.com) (though a Nintendo of France marketing employee). The leaked specs denote the Wii 2 will get a Blu-ray drive (mainly to stop piracy), but will also support 1080P for games as well as movies. The new system is due out during the third quarter of next year and there will be the option to trade in old Wii's!

More details below (translated from French):

This is a nice exclusive we have here at MaxConsole courtesy of Artik from www.Logic-sunrise.com on the Wii 2. The actual information is said to have been leaked from an internal source of the marketing Nintendo France Service. Unlucky for them, this kind of information should stay internal, but that's not our philosophy.

- The Wii2 system will feature a Blu-Ray drive with a secondary aim of stopping piracy.
- 1080P and lower resolutions will be supported, for blu-ray movies and games.
- The release date is scheduled for third quarter of 2010.
- The release will be worldwide and on the same day for all countries.
- A scheme will be available in which it is possible to trade in the original Wii for a cheaper price on the new Wii 2.

Moreover, Nintendo wants to make a worlwide annoucement, only one month before release date. Huge publicity and Viral Marketing will be utilized to create the Buzz. Official pictures are not yet available, and more specs will be released in due course.

True or false, the point is, there are a lot of rumors flying around about new handhelds and now, the Wii 2.
One thing is for sure, something is going on, and once again i say, next gen will start next year (and no, it will not be the PS4 nor the Xbox 720).

PS - i do like the "A scheme will be available in which it is possible to trade in the original Wii for a cheaper price on the new Wii 2." Sony and Microsoft should do that too.

I totally agree. The Wii's sales have slowed considerably and as you said it has no way to expand on it's current iteration. Sony and MS will ride their systems for a few more years (2012) with Natal and Sony's Motion Controller, while the "Wii 2" will come out (I'm guessing) sometime in 2011.

Good article about Nintendo's profits falling 59% the first part of this year.

2011, that´s my call for the new Xbox

In other news, with the arrival of the DSi XL in 2010 in NA and Europe, that´s rules out the DS 2 for the same year, imo.

I find it amusing that they admitted that they screwed up with the hardcore gaming audience in their press conference regarding that.
