From a Newsarama interview with Mark Waid-

Comparing the "Grown Up" Wally West and Dick Grayson:

"What's unique about Wally is he's the only sidekick to grow-up and fulfill the promise... The difference in personality between Wally and Barry isn't as wide a gulf as Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne, Robin wouldn't grow up to be Batman, but I think it's cool Kid Flash grew up to be the Flash...

"Dick Grayson is another character that Geoff Johns and I constantly wrestle over ...it's a testament to the character that so many writers really like him...Should he be afforded more credibility in the DCU? Absolutely... There are people at DC who perceive him as a useless character... as less than he is. That's their prerogative because they are in charge...I would write that character in a cocaine heartbeat. I have begged, begged to be given Nightwing, and have been summarily turned down for no good reason. (joking) God forbid they let me do what I want to do! ... He's so complex and interesting the idea that he was supposed to grow up to be Batman, but took a different route is just so rich for drama..., not to say that Pete Tomasi isn't doing a great job, because he is... I really like the Nightwing book now...it's the best I've seen the book in 20 years."

Imagine what could have been. Waid instead of Bruce Jones, Devin Grayson or a substandard Marv Wolfman.

How dare you insult Bruce Jones and his Jason Todd Octopus Monster. :cmad:

Waid would bring back Octo-Todd, he knows what sells.

He would give Octo-todd annoying children.

So is Nightwing any good right now?

The last 4 parter was ok. But Nightwing has been garbage since One Year Later. It pains me to say that but its true

I had the pleasure of talking briefly with Mr. Waid a year or so ago at MidSouth Con. He mentioned there that he and Geoff Johns both wanted the book, but DC higher-ups thought they both had too much on their plates (this was coming out of 52).
He seems to be a really great guy and a huge fan of not only comics, but the characters he works on.

I've always gotten the feeling that Waid has a genuine affection for the characters he writes. I would've loved to see his Nightwing. :)

Yeah Tomasi's doing fine with the character at the moment. Nothing spectacular, but...fine.

I dropped it about 3 issues in. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't enjoying it enough to justify continuing. Is Rags still drawing? I got the impression that he'd be gone in like 5 issues when I heard he was the "regular" penciler.

He's irregular. Goes in and out. Just comes and goes.

If you know what I mean.

I wish Nightwing were in more comics that don't suck. Remember how he used to be kind of at the center of the DC universe, what with all his ties to, like, everybody?

Tomasi is trying pretty hard to bring that back. Of course it doesn't really matter if he's the only one doing it.

Yeah, that's the problem. I suppose Winick could be viewed as trying to do that too, since he's brought the Titans back, but he's really just furthering the disconnect between the DCU's current comics, if solicitations are any indication.

What Titans comic? There's no such thing.

**** that book.

tiny titans is easily the best titans book out there right now.

why are they wearing helmets and rocket packs? they're the penguins from the movie right?

lmao

Art Baltazar is the coolest guy to meet at a convention.

That is a very interesting tidbit. If Mark Waid wrote Nightwing I'd go back to the book in a freakin' heartbeat. I jumped back on the title during the Year One storyline many years ago and stuck with it for a bit, even through the Jason Todd octopus monster, but it just wasn't delivering. I heard Tomasi's run has been ok but nothing that would make me want to buy the book.

DC, your fans have spoken, Waid wants it. We want him to have it. So give it to him, poopheads! :cmad:
