I am a hardcore NIN fan... and I have quite a few Tool albums...

I believe that Tool's music is a lot harder to get into as a fan, or as a casual music listener.

Sure, NIN is pretty industrial in itself, but Trent's songs are much more easier to listen to (especially stuff post-The Fragile, With_Teeth and on)... but The Fragile and Downward Spiral are his masterpieces.

I'm a Tool fan, and I just got into Nine Inch Nails. I mean I've heard a few of their hits, but never really listened. The Downward Spiral is amazing. Probably my favourite album of all time. Year Zero was decent. With Teeth was kind of hit and miss. A few okay songs, a few great songs. I've only listened to parts of The Fragile, and never listened to Pretty Hate Machine or Ghosts yet.

Both! I listen to so much music all the time, I like most rock, metal, industrial, alternative...

Tool is my wife's favorite band, she got me into them and NIN.

You do realize that Trent Reznor does pretty much everything for NIN? He only hires musicians to play the instrumentals during the tours, but during recording it is all Trent Reznor (very similar to Prince).

But I agree with Paroxysm, neither group should really be compared. Different styles of music and both are excellent at their respective styles.

TOOL. Although NIN is no joke. I agree about them being too different to compare really. Maybe TOOL vs. King Crimson? Or NIN vs. KMFDM?

They're like the big two for me, but NIN for now. I've been listening to Ghosts (and The Social Network score) nonstop for months. I give them the edge for having so many hundreds of sounds that make me go "what the hell is that?" but are also very musical.

I like some Manson here and there, but his discography just isn't even close to the quality of Tool and NIN.

I think it is. I didn't like his last 2 albums at all when I first heard them but when I went back and re-listened to them my opinion changed really quick. Manson is an amazing songwriter
