Nintendo dropped some bombs earlier today via a Japanese press conference, which lead to several surprising announcements. One being the codename of their next generation console (the NX, which Havok posted a thread about already), but the other big one is that Nintendo is going to be entering the mobile market with partner DeNA, a major Japanese mobile company. A lot of news sites have jumped on this, but here are some translations from the actual conference that may clear up some things.

Iwata:

Of course, Nintendo will utilize smart devices as communication media for Nintendo IP. In addition, so that our consumers will be closely connected with them, we will deploy a game business which takes advantage of Nintendo IP.

Iwata:

Quite a few of you must be wondering why Nintendo, which has never deviated from its cautious stance in regard to the possibility of deploying its game business on smart devices, has now changed its policy.
Please note, however, that I was not dismissing the idea of making games for smart devices per se as I stated at the January 2014 Corporate Management Policy Briefing that a development team of Nintendo would create a smart device application, and please also note that I had not ruled out the possibility of making games when we make use of these devices.

Iwata:

Nintendo and DeNA will jointly develop and operate gaming applications for smart devices in global markets.

With this alliance, new entertainment that utilizes Nintendo’s IP will be provided globally via smart devices.

Iwata:

Needless to say, now that we are challenging ourselves in this new business area, we hope that hundreds of millions of people will use and enjoy these products.

Iwata:

As for which Nintendo IP will be used, we do not intend to make any exceptions.Potentially, any Nintendo IP could be used in our smart device software....

Please also note that, even if we use the same IP on our dedicated video game
systems and smart devices, we will not port the titles for the former to the latter just as they are. There are significant differences in the controls, strengths and weaknesses between the controllers for dedicated game systems and the touchscreens of smart devices. We have no intention at all to port existing game titles for dedicated game platforms to smart devices because if we cannot provide our consumers with the best possible play experiences, it would just ruin the value of Nintendo’s IP.

So, at this point there is some vagueness about how much Nintendo will actually be into the mobile market. Some people are wondering if this won't translate more to licensing deals where their IP is lent out, similar to how Nintendo did this with Puzzle & Dragons, only with actual mobile titles. But then again, Iwata does specifically mention developing games. Odds are we'll find out more details later on, but at the very least, it seems Nintendo does have intentions on going into the mobile market in some way.

In regards to what we'll see on Mobile? I would expect VC to open up.. maybe under the unified accounts it will also be retroactive. Lets say they put up Pokémon Red and Blue on the VC.. but the mobile versions allow you to trade Pokémon via WiFi or blutooth.. but I would then expect to be able to turn on my N3DS and download that version too. Transfer saves and Pokémon back and fourth.

Other than that I'd expect games like Pokémon Shuffle.. maybe Pokémon Ranger.. as well as Jumper/Runner style games ala Doodle Jumpe.. only staring Mario. Maybe Links Treasure Hunt where you sail around looking for sunken treasure and Metroid Pop! where you smash Metroids with your finger. I do not expect Super Mario World 3 or a new top down Zelda or 2D Sidescrolling Metroid on mobile.

If Nintendo really wants to try and open up VC to mobile, then they'll have to seriously rework their pricing. They are already pretty pricey, but there's no way you're going to be selling older games at that price to the mobile crowd.

Warioware please! That series is ripe for mobile gaming.

ok so there's even further stuff to all this here's the video for those that did't see it too Updates will also be high lighted in red

Nintendo Teams Up With DeNA To Make Smartphone Games. March 17, 2015 . 12:55am Mobile phone games maker DeNA and Nintendo have entered an alliance by which they will create and operate smartphone games together.

Mobile phone games maker DeNA and Nintendo have entered a “business and capital alliance for the joint development and operation of gaming applications for smart devices” the two companies announced today.

The two companies believe they can create new business opportunities by combining their strengths, and will jointly operate new game applications developed specifically for smart devices. These applications will feature Nintendo IP.

In addition to developing and operating smartphone games together, DeNA and Nintendo will also develop a new “core system,” which they say will be compatible with a variety of smartphones and tablets, as well as Nintendo’s own dedicated videogame platforms. A new membership service utilizing this system will launch in Fall 2015.

As part of their new partnership, DeNA is to allocate 15,081,000 of its treasury shares (corresponding to 10.0% of its issued shares, having a total value of about 22 billion yen) to Nintendo by means of a third-party allocation, and Nintendo is to acquire such shares in DeNa. At the same time, Nintendo is to allocate 1,759,400 of its treasury shares (corresponding to 1.24% of its issues shares, having a total value of about 22 billion yen) to DeNA, and DeNA is to acquire such shares in Nintendo.

Nintendo says this new alliance is not expected to have any effect on its business performance for the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends March 31st, 2015. “The expected impact upon future business performance is to be reflected in the forecasts of financial results for the next fiscal year onwards,” the company said in a statement.

Nintendo and DeNA are expected to announce further details during a “Business and Capital Alliance Announcement” press conference, which will be held in Japan at 5 pm today. The event will be livestreamed and you can watch it using the embed below. [Update: The presentation has ended. Watch it below, starting around the 32:00 mark.]

Nintendo’s Next Dedicated Videogame Platform Is Codenamed “NX” [Update]
. March 17, 2015 . 1:25am

Nintendo is working on their next videogame platform, codenamed “NX”.

Nintendo may be teaming up with DeNA to create games for smartphones, but that doesn’t mean they intend to stop creating games for dedicated videogame platforms. In fact, their next dedicated videogame hardware is codenamed “NX,” company president Satoru Iwata revealed at a press event today.

Iwata said it is currently too early to reveal details on NX, but that more details on this device will be shared next year. He did not provide any further details regarding what shape the device would take, but has said in the past that Nintendo’s next home console and handheld will both share a similar architecture and operating system.

During the joint press conference with DeNA, Iwata clarified that Nintendo will not port videogames created for dedicated consoles to smart devices. He went on to say that Nintendo intends to use smartphone games to draw consumers to their dedicated videogame platforms, and that the company maintains its passion for dedicated game devices and game experiences that offer good value to customers.

Update: During a Q&A session, Iwata was asked why the company chose to announce its next dedicated videogame console during a press conference about their partnership with DeNA. He replied that Nintendo chose to make the NX announcement so people would understand that Nintendo are not exiting the dedicated videogame business, and that the company “will be progressing with dedicated videogame devices with passion”.

Agreed.

Warioware please! That series is ripe for mobile gaming.

Warioware would be absolutely perfect for a mobile platform. Stuff like Pokemon Shuffle too. I'm not all that excited for Nintendo's mobile stuff. I've got my 3DS if I want to play Nintendo on the go and I've never, ever played a mobile game that wasn't either terrible, or begging me for money at all times.

Probably not surprisingly, Nintendo's stock jumped up 29% after the press releast. Stock holders have been asking for mobile stuff since last year.

Adding this here since it's of topic

it's just a Video & Audio pod cast from from EPN.TV this week end . they're putting o their youtube channel but the linked words of description lead to the page where the VOD & AOD was doe below

well to be fair, they really havent said anything after that initial press conference. I think that will change once we hear about what franchises will make the jump and actual content starts to materialize. Im interested but I have nothing to offer besides a list of stuff Id want to see

Well, this is all after that initial conference I believe, but you're right in the sense nothing is new. Of course, it's ironic, but they've said a thousand times more about their mobile stuff and ideas than NX by far, but all the talk is about NX. But I get that, the internet stuff that covers this is more interested in core gaming over mobile.

Nintendo And DeNA Have Been In Talks Since 2010. March 25, 2015 . 2:32pm

Specific details of partnership hashed out last Summer.

Nintendo and DeNA recently announced a partnership by which the two companies would collaborate to develop smartphone games using Nintendo properties and also create Nintendo’s new membership program. Since then, a summarized version of their presentation has been shared on Nintendo’s investor site and reveals when talks of the partnership between the two companies first began.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says he first met DeNA CEO Isao Moriyasu in 2010, when the latter approached Nintendo with a proposal to use their properties in mobile games. Moriyasu’s enthusiasm for such a collaboration caused Nintendo to continue talks with him beyond that first meeting.

“At some point in the past, I realized that there would be great potential for global synergy by combining the efforts of the two companies, as we would face dynamic environmental changes,” Iwata said to analysts and the press. “Since then, in addition to my discussions with Mr. Moriyasu, key persons from both companies have been discussing these possibilities.”

Moriyasu adds that specific plans regarding an alliance between Nintendo and DeNA only began in Summer 2014.

“We had numerous meetings where I myself talked to many Nintendo members in person,” Moriyasu said. “The more we talked, the stronger I believed each company’s strengths could complement one other. I started to wonder how huge of an impact we would make globally as one team.”

One of the reasons that DeNA were keen on a partnership with Nintendo is because competition in the mobile games space has intensified and it has become increasingly difficult to get games noticed. Moriyasu says he believes recognized I.P. is the most effective way to make your game stand out, so an alliance with Nintendo, who own some of the most recognized I.P. globally, made sense.

It's that marvel Brawler from last month in the where are the good marvel games thread. Apparently DeNA's the one that developed it.

I was just saying we might see this marvel brawler as one of the first games with the new deal with nintendo

Uh, I'm not sure what exactly what you're trying to say. The deal is about Nintendo games and IP obviously, not third party? DeNA isn't a part of Nintendo, if that's what you're saying.

Who is it they were merging with then? cause the articles say other wise. there are two articles about it above what I recently posted it's the same Name DeNA who made that game also.

It's sure freaky they have the same name .

Merging with? There is no merger, it's a partnership. Nintendo and DeNA are going to remain separate companies. Not sure where you're getting anything about a merger.

yeah it's true partnership ( I chose the wrong words ) but they will have Nintendo make game for them & vice versa from what they said . Anyway I said might.

No, Nintendo will be developing the actual games (though I'm sure some will be a co-development situation with other developers, including DeNA), the DeNA partnership is more about applications and accounts. Nintendo will not be handling DeNA games, they will, remain their own separate entity with their own IPs and licensing.

I know I did say I didn't chose the right words partners still mean your your self separate but equal I know what it mean even though it's used a other mean at times with catchall terms . especilly when they are in the same near business or building. but still meaning your running your own thing/ business. we'll some how I still expect that name on some level. on only to be available in there stores sense where DeNA's involved .

Hm, there is very big difference between a merger and partnership. I'm really not sure what it is you're getting at. Are you trying to say that Nintendo will develop third party on mobile through DeNA? Because that's not the situation at all. I think you've misread somewhere

Oh I didn't say that. I'm saying they might possibly will receive third party via DeNA. Not develop or publish it them selves. & I did use the technical word "possibly" (meaning I know it's also possible it won't happen but it depends ) But Nintendo already has two portable marvel games( big hero 6 that disc wars avengers game) being made for the 3Ds.

They're already on good terms with marvel
