Those rumours that an Xbox 360 price cut is on the way just haven't stopped flying in recent weeks - but now John Porcaro, group manager of PR and communications for Microsoft US, has shot them down once again.
In a post on his blog, Porcaro wrote: "As you’re all aware, there have been rumors of a price drop for the Xbox 360 coming along later this year. The official word from folks in the know is that there are currently no plans for a price drop this fall."

"If you’ve been holding off picking one up because you think they'll be cheaper in the future, or they've been hard to find, or because you’re too busy catching up on past episodes of Lost, wait no longer," he added, before highlighting the Xbox 360's features and the range of games available for the console.

Porcaro also took a potshot at the PlayStation 3, which is due to launch this November priced at $499 / $599. "Just think... This holiday as some people go broke because they're forced to buy movie technology with their game console, you'll be choosing from 160 games, including Gears of War, Madden 07, Splinter Cell, Forza 2, and lots more."

Not forgetting Mass Effect, Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto "later on", Porcaro added.

His comments echo those made to our sister site, GamesIndustry.biz earlier this year by Xbox Europe boss Chris Lewis, who said that the PS3's price point "forces the consumer down a choice path in a way that I'm surprised to see".

He said Sony's decision had removed pressure on Microsoft to cut the cost of the Xbox 360 by the end of 2006, stating: "We're confident that we are at the right price at the right time and will remain so."

*PFFT* YEAH, I SAW THAT......BUT YOU REALLY CAN'T TRUST 'MS' ; THEY AREN'T GONNA SPILL THE BEANS ON S**T. ;)

People should still get one

A Wii60 super combo, actually.

I STILL SAY 'MS' WILL AT LEAST MAKE THE 20GB STANDARD (EFFECTIVELY DROPPING THE "CORE" ), AND HAVING A 60GB MODEL FOR $400.00, IN TIME FOR
THE HOLIDAYS.

I think it would be a mistake not to do at least a small price job...push the advantage while you have it.

Wrong glass, sir :(

So when the time comes, should I get a 60HDD? Will they even sell them separately?

IT WOULD ONLY MAKE SENSE TO GET AN EXTRA HDD, IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE DOWNLOADING A TON OF STUFF. BUT, THE STANDARD HDD WOULD BE KEY IN IMPROVING THE OVERALL SYSTEM, AND GIVING DEVS THE SAME ADVANTAGE THEY HAD WITH THE 'XBOX'. THE 20GB HDD ONLY COSTS 'MS' ABOUT $20, SO THEY COULD DEFINITELY AFFORD TO MAKE IT STANDARD.

How much do you think a 60HDD would cost?

THEY'D PROBABLY MAKE IT ABOUT $120 AS AN ADD-ON, IF IT WAS STANDARD WITH THE $400 MODEL.

That's too much, Foolio McRandom :o

I don't download a lot of stuff anyway, I'll stick to my 20 GB HDD then

WELL, THE 20GB WAS $100 (WHICH WAS A RIP-OFF). BUT, THE ONLY REASON FOR ANYONE TO NEED A LARGER HDD IS IF 'MS' DOES INDEED (AND LIKELY WILL) EXPAND THE FUNCTIONALITY OF 'LIVE' INTO MOVIES............AND ALSO FOR THE EXPANSION OF YOUR 'LIVE ARCADE' LIBRARY.

Hmm....I must think on this...

I want to try the Wii, but I just can't see myself actually using one as an actual gaming console.

Amazon are doing a pretty good deal on the 360 in the UK at the moment.

Microsoft might just keep the core around in limited quantities to compete price wise with the Wii, even though it's a pretty useless configuration.

Personally I don't think its a good idea, Microsoft believe it or not imo is intimidated by Sony's PS3 for some reason or another, so they are cutting the price, they think that this is strategery <If anyone catches that joke  When personally I think its stupid to have a price cut after a year, they will be losing more money now producing the consoles and they are cutting it just because the PS3 is coming out. PS3 might blow and Microsoft will just be sitting there saying we are loosing money for nothing.

Microsoft doesn't want to compete with the Wii though, they're telling everyone to buy it. The core won't be around much longer at all.

I wonder if I should get a 360 now if there's no pricedrop in the Fall. It could be a trick for MS to get the most out of the 360.
