I recently reformatted my computer using the windows restore disk. And now I have no sound....

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

thats what comes up if i try to play music.... youtube and internet videos have no audio either.

Here's some comp info that probably isn't relevant at all...:

1.80 gigahertz AMD Sempron
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
128 kilobyte secondary memory cache

160.03 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
136.80 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

1408 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot '0' has 1024 MB
Slot '1' has 512 MB

Board: K8NF4G-SATA2 1.00
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz

(device manager) SOUND, VIDEO and GAME CONTROLLERS
  • Audio Codecs
  • Legacy audio drivers
  • legacy audio capture devices
  • media control devices
  • standard game port
  • video codecs
and yet... no sound, nothing works...

Is there a site where I can download the necessary audio codec?

well there many be several issues causing this problem.

before i can answer this,, are you using a soundcard or onboard sound?

if its onboard sound the drivers will automatically install ... and some soundcards will install automatically also. if it is a soundcard then you have to search for drivers on the internet.. i could find them if you tell me the soundcard manufacture/model number.

a screenshot from your device manager would be a big help.

You see the ! next to Multimedia device, that means that the OS sees the Multimedia Device (most likely sound card) but does not know how to run it. Meaning, it doesnt have device drivers for it.

Googling the model motherboard - K8NF4G
It looks like its a
Realtek ALC850

Try this site - LINK

Also, have you run WINDOWS UPDATE on the PC? Many times those device drivers are picked up by Windows Update...I suggest trying that first
