Of the Night: The Stannis Thread

Oh well dammit. Look at that. You were first, delete mine.

I don't support Stannis but I do support Davos Seaworth...the real one true King.

This is art, and should be treated like art:

Stannis is the only character I support for acending to the throne. However, I realize he is probably going to be killed off in one of the later books, and Dany will end up taking the throne. Still, he will be the only candidate in the show/books I support.

Me too. He caught my attention when he sailed to the Wall's aid. I started rooting for him in A Dance with Dragons. I'm hoping that [blackout]Stannis at least manages to convince the North to rally against the true enemy before he goes down. Maybe supply the North with plenty of dragonglass (isn't Dragonstone rich in obsidian?)[/blackout]

It is, and [BLACKOUT]Stannis ordered them to start mining it. The only question is whether or not he still holds Dragonstone. King's Landing got reports that Loras took the castle, while suffering massive injuries in the process, but some people seem to think that the story is inconsistent, and that something else is going on at Dragonstone. Either way, I don't think it answers to Stannis anymore.[/BLACKOUT]

I think despite his personality and brooding nature, which is pretty understandable given his **** life, Stannis has done more to earn the Throne than any other king or queen. Out of all of them he's the only one who has actually lived up to the title "Protector of Realm" and while I don't think he's going to survive the series end (I think there's a 50/50 chance he'll die in WoW) I think he'll go down as a real tragic figure struggling to bring justice to an unjust world.

Also fun fact: by Targaryen laws of succession, Stannis is Dany's heir.

Yeah, I can't figure his story has a happy ending either, but it'd be nice to see him leave a lasting impact on the overall story. Maybe he truly does [blackout]liberate Winterfell, and in doing so unites the North under him and focuses them towards the Wall. No matter his fate after that, it would be a pretty good legacy.[/blackout]

Stannis isn't so bad, only if you compare him to Joffrey (or Tywin, who's ruling by proxy). He does routinely burn people alive for believing in the wrong god(s). I'd say that hardly makes him just.

Which I think says a lot about Westeros, that their equivalent of Bloody Mary is the good king.

To be fair, watching that scene on Dragonstone, Stannis looks pretty disgusted with the nightfire. You can see it in Dillane's eyes and the scowl. I'm not excusing him, but that kind of flaw, power at any cost yet willing to act where others are neglecting their duties of office, makes him a more compelling hero. Or anti-hero, if you will. He has a great line from the books that I hope makes it into the show:

"Half of my army is made up of nonbelievers. There will be no burnings. Pray harder."

Going by the books, no, he does not burn people for following the wrong gods. He burns people as a form of public execution for crimes that would result in death anyway. He just dresses it up as religious cerimony as a way to appease the likes of Melisandre, even then he does so grudgingly.

Few of the birds that Maester Ameon had sent off had returned as yet. One reached Stannis, though. One found Dragonstone, and a king who still cared.

This. This is when I finally realized that Stannis is the Mannis.
