Blade Official Blade General Discussion and Speculation Thread!

Ali is gonna walk. It's insane how long this is taking.

Isn't he already 50? If they want to establish a new Blade for several films, how will they even work? Granted, he looks great! But still.
He turned 50 last February.

Ultimately, if the goal is to have Blade as one of the figureheads of the future MCU films (leading character of a potential trilogy that would also appear in films like Avengers and other films), they should have someone that can physically do stunt/action scenes and wire works for a long time and the age of the actor won't be a factor. Hugh Jackman, Keanu Reeves and The Rock (I'm assuming these actors are in his age bracket), are doing fairly well in their recent action movies but those actors have been in so many action films. I haven't seen the Blade actor in so many films. I only remember him from Luke Cage.

Edit: Apparently he was in Predators, Alita, 2 Hunger Games and 2 Spider-Verse films but I don't remember him from those films.

If you mean a lynchpin like Iron Man or Cap, I don't think that was ever the goal.

Agreed. That wouldn’t even make sense. A leading figure of the Midnight Sons corner, sure.

It’s a shame this hasn’t come to fruition yet.

In slight fairness to Marvel, they were already developing Blade before Ali approached them. Marvel Studios had intially tried developing it as a film. Then some time later (not sure if it was before/after the Studios split from Marvel Entertainment) Ike gave Marvel Tevelsion dibs on the character. Lorraine Cink, creative director for Marvel, accidently tweeted about the show back in 2017 then deleted it.

Then when with all the the Netflix cancellations and reports of the imepending doom of Marvel Television, at some point Marvel Studios tried reignite their development to do Blade as a movie again. The Variety article and Ali himself even acknowledge this on a podcast a few years back.
Marvel Was Discussing a Blade TV Series Before Mahershala Ali Signed on

Now it can definitely be argued that Marvel probably wasn't as far development wise as they would have liked to have been by the time Ali contacted them. And given the timeline of events, they probably weren't. Most of what they had developed was probably years old stuff from prior to Marvel Television taking control of Blade. Ultimately this stuff is moot and doesn't make too much of difference all these years later. But just wanted to point some of this out, since most people seem to forget this.

Blade would have been awesome as part of the Netflix series. I was felt Ali was wasted in Luke Cage.

I doubt Blade would have been announced as a film, if the character already received a live action Netflix series. Production values would have been another concern if it was a Netflix series.

“There wasn’t enough attention paid to it,” says one insider. “It really was a casualty of the ‘too much’ era.”

I'm guessing this the biggest issue. Despite having Ali attached and him being the main driving force, it was simply not a priority in the grand scheme of things so it kept getting shuffled around. And as a result, it changed their thought process on what the movie should be about.

It's vampires. You don't need too big of a budget for that.

I actually sort of wish Blade and that entire Hulu thing happened. Yeah, lower budget. But a Defenders esque series leading to Midnight Suns would have been awesome

Step 1: Rewrite the script
Step 2: Potential director leaves
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Convert into Disney+ series
Step 5: Profit

I'm disappointed they dropped the 1920s setting. That would've been cool.

Chad Stahelski directing this would be insane. But I know he's got that highlander movie lined up next. He did express interest in doing a Blade film though, but would want Disney to wait for his schedule to open up.

If Marvel is attending next month's SDCC, either they left this out or announce a new release date.

Don't know if this will turn out to be true. They don't even have a director yet, do they?
Its not the first time, Blade had a production start date... I don't know if they don't know how to give up or they are just resilient trying to make this Blade movie happen but its not always bad to quit something. This seems like a lost cause and they might be throwing resources to something that would just lead to a massive failure in the end.

The version that was aiming to shoot last year was set in the 1920s, according to sources, and featured Mia Goth as a vampire villain named Lilith who wanted the blood of Blade’s daughter. (Goth remains attached to star in the project.) For another iteration, under Tariq, Marvel built a massive train set, but it was never used. (It may be passed on to a different Disney production.) The new take on Blade is said to be present day.
Interesting tidbit from the Hollywood Reporter article. I’m assuming that was for an action set piece. I wonder what the issues really were that they stopped production even after sets were built. And why those issues weren’t identified until so late into production? Now with the time period of the script changing, those sets built are unusable for this version. How much are all these delays going to balloon the budget?

Yikes, they built a train set for Blade, only for it not to be used for this film...

So it was true, they were really about to shoot this film before it was delayed.
