Loved Dafoe's Goblin...Best part of the movie...But they shouldn't have covered up his face with the mask...He has so much character in his face...He couldn't emote!

Agreed. I think they tried to make up for it by exposing his eyes and mouth occasionally, but its not the same. I just dont know how they could have pulled it off. We want to see his face have expressions, but a rubber mask would look ridiculous. A literal transformation to a Goblin wouldnt be in character. I can see why Raimi didnt want to do any villains that wear masks.

Yes...Indeed it would be one of the only ways to do it...

^^ Heh. Yeah a poll would be overkill. :P

I'm excited about seeing Jr's rendition of the Goblin and Spidey, again. But then I see Anti-Venom [yawn] and realize that's it's BND continuity and my heart sinks.

Sometimes I even feel like crying...

I just want to know where in the hell all of these symbiotes are coming from! And why do we need another one? Hybrid has been forgotten and so has Toxin. Hell, it looks like Anti-Venom is going to be an enemy of Venom. Wasnt that what Toxin was shaping up to be? Why re-invent the wheel?

Sales. Thats why. The kids love symbiotes, especially new ones.

From Cybertron!...Along with them Transformers!:woot:

Megatron sure did a lousy job of destroying his planet. Everything survived!:whatever:

Ugh.

When I was a kid, I didn't like symbiotes. Well, as much as the kids do these days! I was more interested in the classic villains and what they brought to Peter's world. Not some cheap throwaway device to ''menace'' Spider-Man. Venom, really bought the most to the symbiote saga and i suppose it was a logical transition of the time. Venom ''back in the day'' was a well written adversary that was a good final act to the Black Suit stories.

It's the overkill and blatant dumb, lazy storytelling that gets me. Carnage and Toxin and...Hybrid? Well, i havent even heard of that one.

Then, I'm only 19 and still considered a ''kid'' by most standards.

Yeah, Hybrid hasnt been seen in over ten years. Here is his profile:http://spiderfan.org/characters/hybrid.html

I used to like Venom and Carnage a lot,but as you said, their stories got more and more ridiculous.

"Carnage develops the power to absorb other symbiotes and grows twenty stories tall! Venom stops him by screaming at him!"

"Venom and Carnage discover they can send their symbiotes online via a hard drive and fight each other on the internet!" So on.

Thats when I discovered the Green Goblin. A father/son drama with psychological undertones. A son so desperate for his father's love, he is willing to kill his best friend. A friend wrongly accused of murder. A little depth goes a long way. Much better than the shallow mega event of the month. Sadly, Marvel settled for the mega events.:csad:

I finally picked up a copy of Wizard #203 and found a very interesting article about a new book that is coming out. Its called "The World of Steve Ditko." It talks a lot about Ditko's early years working on Spider-Man. It mentions breifly that Stan Lee originally wanted the Green Goblin to be an Egyptian demon awoken by a Hollywood film crew. Ditko shot the idea down because it was too far out of the realm of possibility.

I dont know how true this book can be, as Ditko and Lee have had their differences over the years. Ditko says he really did a lot of the things that Lee took credit for. You have to wonder if he is trying to grab for glory or if he is really telling the truth. Still, what I've read has been interesting.

Its ok, but I prefer the original. So who here is looking forward to New Ways to Die? Norman and Harry together again for the first time 35 years! :wow: Green Goblin vs Menace! Thunderbolts vs Spidey! Ah, good times...:woot:

BND still sucks though.

New Ways to Die definently looks good. I loved Osborn in Thunderbolts and I'm so excited to see him coming back as the Goblin with the Thunderbolts into ASM.

Ok, I just gotta geek out over how much I love the Goblin.

He's perfect. The psychology. The dynamic between Norman and Harry. There is a reason he's the Green Goblin. Green is the color of greed, jealousy. Norman's ambition was his strength and his weakness. He was already rich, but he wanted more. He was willing to make a deal with the devil by joining with the mobs by killing an innocent man.

His motivation wasnt a "typical super villain's" motivation: it was all psychological. His father had lost a fortune and Norman became obsessed with regaining wealth and power. He tried to instill the necessary ruthlessness into Harry, but it just didnt take with the kid. Norman's thirst for power made him a monster in how he treated others and especially his own son. Now thats human drama.

Harry of course wanted to please his distant father and he became a monster to do so, just like Norman. Again, Green. Jealousy. Much as he loved Peter, he hated Spider-Man even more. This was a trauma to Peter as well. Just read the first few pages of "Shrieking." Peter's anguish over Harry's death and betrayal to please his bastard of a father is palpable. And the Legacy of the Goblin didnt just taint the Parkers, it destroyed the Osborn family. Liz started drinking and Harry physically took out his anger on Norman Jr, just like Norman Sr took out his anger on Harry by beating the snot out of him. Thats how you tell a good story: real, human consequences, not deals with the devil.

The Osborns could have been plenty impressive had they never put on the costume. Perhaps some people are turned off by the Goblin costume. I love it. The gothic, Halloween feel really gets me. Norman was a little off his rocker when he came up with the idea to dress up that way, and thats why I love it. He was willing to go all out. He embraced the darkness in himself. He wasnt an accident like Doc Ock or Venom. Yes, the Goblin Formula was an accident, but he made a conscious decision to become the Goblin. In a way, I think of him as a modern day Dracula:a rich lord (lets face it, a CEO of a major chemical business is a modern day medieval lord) with a dark side. And how regal is it to come screaming out of the sky hurling flaming pumpkins on a giant bat glider? Corny to some, damned beautiful to me.

He may be crazy, but the man is a genius. Yes, he's a scientist and a businessman but he's a brilliant tactician as well. He is always two steps ahead of Spider-Man. Spidey thinks he's got Norman right where he wants him and Gobby is already laughing at how he fell into the plan so well. He torments Peter. Period.

Who else could have masterminded the destruction of his enemy's life from a halfway around the world? Venom? Please. He's all brute force. Subtle as a bulldozer. Ock? Certainly. But he isnt interested in Spider-Man. He wants the bug out of his way, but furthering his name in science (granted, at any cost) is his obsession. Where is the sadism? The personal aspect? The fun? Norman torments Peter every way he can. He's a cat playing with a mouse.Kill your girlfriend right in front of you? Goblin. Torment your best friend while making him kiss your ass? Goblin. Murder your enemy's newborn daughter as "payback" for your son's death (which, face it, you practically drove him to)? Goblin again.

ALL HAIL THE PUMPKIN KING! :gg: :bomb:
