Official Green Lantern News & Discussion Thread - Part 5

I have been told that screenings for Green Lantern are apparently awful. This comes from a source who has told the truth about things on more than one occasion.

"I'm not going into exact numbers, but they're below 40 for the young audience and below 25 for the adult audience."

"The same firm that conducts the Transformers' screenings."

"Screenings have been miserable."

The response that is 'bolded' is his answer regarding who his source is.

"Look at this way, the Batman nipple movies had better numbers."

I refuse to believe that Batman & Robin got a better reaction at its screenings than GL.

Nothing in Thor looks as terrible as GL's mask :p .

The new viral sites should've been out months ago.

There's been the sense that we have a bomb on our hands here for a while.

To me, what did this movie in . . . toes on his boots. His boots have freaking toes.

The first trailer did bad and they are struggling to get all the FX and deadlines done. Forcing a ****** 3D conversion has badly affected this movie.

Just saying, they went overboard with the suit designs. Besides that they along with the domino mask look like terrible visual effects.

Why couldn't Hal have a practical suit and a practical mask?

Sorry I just don't like the design aesthetics of the suit. I don't like the look of the trailers. I think Reynolds is in over his head here. Hey let's see the movie prove me wrong. I'll attempt to see it early for sure. I'll be there opening day if not because I love Green Lantern and I've waited years to see it. But a bad movie is a bad movie.

Teetering on the edge, don't you think?

Saw this posted on Blog of Oa's twitter this morning. Very interesting find. I didn't expect any viral marketing from GL but it's cool to see they are putting this out there. Very curious.

Yeah. Interesting isn't it?

The guy at the REI store tells me he sells about 2 pair a week. The thing about it, though is that not everyone's feet can fit them and you have to get used to running in with them on.

You are free to ban him if you like. You definitely have my vote.

^ That is a genuinely good point too, Thor's effects are no more impressive than those in the GL trailer, in fact they are down right clunky in some parts, and yet people whine about the CG in GL? Bizarre.

Weird isn't it? There is a reason for that of course. Plants.

Are you kidding me? Plants supporting Thor and trying to poison Green Lantern?

WB were the ones that admitted the visuals looked bad and they were struggling to finish things and make deadlines.

That was during the first trailer. The extra 9 million work being put in has been going on for months. We already know what your agenda is.

Thor was great! But I think Green Lantern will be good too. Not sure how good it will be however.

Would be awesome if it becomes TOP 5 material, but I doubt it right now. Thor might join my top 5 if I love it upon a second viewing again.

At the very worst case scenario I expect it to make a bit more than what SR did, at 400 mil. world wide.

No way it will bomb.

Agenda? LOL. I'm not with anti-GL special forces.

Spending all that extra money to scramble last minute visuals to try and fix it isn't necessarily a GOOD thing to hear for a production of this magnitude.

As KalMart has pointed out in some of his posts here, It is nothing new for CGI effects movies to keep improving and fine tune the effects, and GL is not the only movie which relies on effects that is doing this.

So, this is a part of making CGI heavy movies nowadays, it does not necessarily mean that GL or other movies doing work till the last few days are in some deep trouble.

I believe him more as he is in this profession, rather than just a poster who is a fan.

Not if he was actually wearing one.

Even then. Robin's in Batman Forever was probably the best it's ever been done. But that film was also basically a live action cartoon so it fit a bit better. Not sure they're going that route with GL. In fact it looks very much like they aren't.

I don't think that a real "practical rubber mask" would look good.

Yes because a cheap crappy pilot that was never picked up or made to series that almost no one ever saw means it would be bad.

The fact of the matter is the CG painted on one doesn't look good . . . so . . . :whatever:

To me I figure I just have to accept the domino mask like Superman's glasses-as-a-disguise, Hulk's pants still fitting, etc. Sure, a domino mask is hardly believable for hiding anyone's identity under any circumstances. Maybe Hal also has the ring set to give off a slight distortion in the perceptions of others when he has the mask on and that helps them not realize who he is? It's about the best idea I could guess at.

I don't see what the big deal is with the toes. In the second trailer you can't even notice them and most of the time his "boots" are black. When the light streams through his suit then you see more of that "exoskeleton" type of look and I believe they did that because with all the different alien species we do get to see more of their structure and shape underneath their suits.

But that's not even the main concern for me with the movie. I think the movie will do well, but I just worry that it may be standard superhero fare and not really go beyond that, when really there is potential to explore a lot of GL mythology. When I watched Thor, while I enjoyed it, I thought there could be a lot more done with that story, but it was very mainstream and easy to digest, that maybe the initial success will allow them to take more chances with a sequel. It's like they have to make it popular first before going darker or more different and risky. Origin movies are also limiting in a way. I'm just hoping GL isn't standard in every way and that it is epic and does excite audiences for the mythology.

Another concern I have is with Hal fighting Parallax. Because of Parallax's "form", I'm not sure what the fight scenes will be like.

Wow, is that supposed to be Guy Gardner in that screen shot from the pilot there? haha

Personally, I don't have a problem with the mask or the costume. I'm more worried about the guy in the costume and under the mask.

He was another one of those weird amalgams, he had Kyle’s mask, a bit of Hal’s look/hair, personality, and the overall uniform and name was Guy Gardner. Although he was a Software Salesman.
This really was just a completely made up character they just called GL: Guy Gardner.

They could has just done away with the mask altogether, it's always seemed pointless to me.

How do you figure?

I don't expect it to bomb but it is not impossible. And 400M WW is by no means an easy number for a movie to get.

He has a secret identity.
good joke. :awesome:

you know whats funny? that if i would say that Hal could use the energy from the ring to hide hes face. but then some fan would say that it looks stupid. and then i would show him the stupid domino mask. muhahahhahahah
