Going Beyond “Los Angeles” To A Far East Setting In Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice . August 30, 2016 . 12:30pm

Siliconera recently spoke with Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice producer Motohide Eshiro and scenario director Takeshi Yamazaki about the game’s new setting, system, returning characters, using fan feedback, and more.

Siliconera recently spoke with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice producer Motohide Eshiro and scenario director Takeshi Yamazaki about the game’s new setting, system, returning characters, using fan feedback, and more.

Maya Fey returns in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice. Maya is an important character in the series and it’s been a while for her return. Why did you want to bring her back in this game?
Motohide Eshiro, Producer: There were a lot of people who wanted to see her in the previous game, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies, so we decided to answer their desire by having Maya return in Spirit of Justice. However, we didn’t want to just have her return for no reason, so we made it so that Maya was training in the Kingdom of Khura’in, which ties her appearance to one of the key aspects of this game: spirit channeling and spiritual powers.

Spirit of Justice goes back to the five strikes instead of the lifebar introduced in the second Ace Attorney game. Why did you go back to this system?
Takeshi Yamazaki, Game and Scenario Director: The reason there was a lifebar to begin with in Ace Attorney: Justice For All was because the player could receive penalties for making mistakes during the Psyche-Lock segments of the Investigation sections.

In Dual Destinies, we removed the penalties from the Psyche-Lock segments. However, because our goal was to faithfully recreate the feel of the first four games on the Nintendo 3DS, we kept the gauge as part of the overall look. But because you would get a game over after five mistakes, it was not functionally necessary to keep it as a gauge anymore. Therefore, in keeping with the UI design concept for Spirit of Justice of giving each country its own unique look, we decided to go back to the five strikes style with magatama marks and attorney’s badges for Khura’in and the US respectively.

The water mirror mechanics in Spirit of Justice are interesting. Instead of looking at still evidence players are reviewing videos. What inspired this idea and how did you design cases to work with this new system?
TY: The Divination Séance came about because we wanted to create a new gameplay system that was heavily tied to spirit channeling – one of the key concepts to the story of Spirit of Justice. It also arose thanks to a common quip we’ve heard throughout the life of the series amongst fans. Namely, why doesn’t Maya just channel the victim? Then they’d have the name of the real culprit in no time. We thought that it would be interesting to tackle this taboo way of solving a mystery head on.

Creating cases that utilized this system was actually really tough. Up until now, the moment of the crime was always something we kept hidden from players until the very end, but with the Divination Séance, we had to show it up front at the beginning of the episode. In addition, we still had to create puzzles and mysteries for players to solve and situations for players to turn around until the very end. So, you see, the Divination Séance wasn’t just a high-pressure, life or death situation for Phoenix, but for us scenario writers, too.

Spirit of Justice takes place in a foreign land and there is more emphasis on the game’s Far East setting than in previous titles which take place in “Los Angeles.” What inspirations did you draw from when creating Khura’in?
TY: Around the time we decided that we were going to bring Maya back, we hit upon the idea to set the game someplace that would serve as the birthplace and the roots of the Kurain Channeling Technique and its accompanying beliefs – a sort of “head temple,” if you will. In order to create a fitting backdrop, we developed the Kingdom of Khura’in into a sacred land that incorporates a number of different cultural aspects from a variety of Asian countries. But this foreign country isn’t the only important locale in Spirit of Justice; there’s a very important story arc building back home around Apollo’s cases, too. Just what kind of cases will Apollo and Athena take on in their boss’s absence is something you’ll have to play to find out.
20160512_005526_thumb.png

How did you create the new prosecutor in Spirit of Justice? Making enemies for Phoenix is tough because the player has to ultimately outwit them, but at the same time the enemy character has to seem more knowledgeable than the player otherwise the player doesn’t feel a challenge.
TY: You’re right, in that the rival prosecutors are always the toughest characters to create. Because they are characters that players wrestle with and defeat throughout the game, it’s very important that they be worthy opponents. To that end, we thought to make Nahyuta literally as strong as a god. By making him a monk from a foreign land, we were able to create a character with an air of mysticism and omnipotence. We had also wanted to do something different with him in contrast to the main prosecutor of Dual Destinies, Simon Blackquill. In Dual Destinies, Blackquill was dressed all in black and was meant to be an “evil prosecutor,” so this time, we went for a white-based color pallet with Nahyuta to create a “holy prosecutor” look.

One of the cases in the game has Phoenix Wright facing off against Apollo and Athena. What was it like writing this story?
TY: Phoenix and Apollo are the two main protagonists, and as such, it became apparent in the course of writing their stories that they would eventually have to face off against one another in order to bring the two arcs together into one climactic ending. I can’t wait for players to experience this dramatic story for themselves.

Spirit of Justice has some interesting callbacks such as Edgeworth returning as a rival in a DLC case. Which characters have fans said they want to see again and which characters would you like to bring back?
ME: There are so many characters I’d personally like to see return, so it’s hard for me to pick which ones should. That’s why I like to leave that up to the players and will work to bring back characters that are most in demand.

Eshiro-san, you have said fan feedback prompted the option to turning off hints and passionate fans energized the team to continue the Ace Attorney series. What fan feedback did you receive that surprised you the most?
ME: I don’t really want to call out any specific feedback as that would be rude to the other fans who have also expressed their feelings on the series, but there were a large number of core fans who felt that the previous game was too easy and that there weren’t enough places to freely investigate, so we worked hard to first and foremost address their critiques when we made this game.

Capcom has shared two more character profiles over on their official blog. This time, the two characters featured are Trucy Wright and Bonny de Famme.

Trucy made her first appearance in the series in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, assisting Apollo through many investigations and trials. In Spirit of Justice, Trucy finally achieves her dream of putting on a professional magic show. However, when one of the performers is found murdered, Trucy unfortunately becomes the first suspect.

However, her assistant, Bonny de Famme, is ready to back her up. In addition to being Trucy’s assistant, Bonny is also her biggest fan and has a rather amazing trick up her sleeve: she can teleport from one place to another. Bonny’s presence on stage at the time of the murder also makes her a very important witness when it comes to Trucy’s trial.

To learn more about Trucy and Bonny, you can go here.

Well, will you look at this: Super Mario Maker is getting a 3DS version. Coming worldwide December 2nd. No online, however, only local and street pass sharing.

CrRg6lIWAAEyLOV.jpg

I just heard, and I'm excited. It was probably the only game I could have seen myself getting a Wii U for, but I was on the fence about it. So it will be cool to try it out now on a handheld.

Can't really get excited for re-games (Mario Maker again, Hyrule Warriors again, Yoshi WW again...) but that last game was a delight. Pikmin 3DS is a get for me, especialy since it looks to play like Kirby Mass Attack (my favorite Kirby game ever).

I was very happy with this Direct. Lots of surprises. I want Pikmin on 3DS, but I'm not 100% sure about what they showed us. It's obviously still in development so we'll see.

ok so here's the short and to the point (being it's only nintendo for the written half I'm puting up) video and article form Run down fallowed by VOD for those that missed it. those that didn't miss the direct don't worry about this

EP Daily Rundown for September 1, 2016
Today in the Rundown, we've got a round-up of all the best announcements from the latest Nintendo Direct presentation! We've also got new details on how robots are replacing humans, smart news for Netflix fans, and a look at the silly big screen Max Steel movie.

ith the NX right around the corner, Nintendo hasn’t forgotten about the 3DS. They hosted a special Nintendo Direct presentation earlier today, focusing specifically on new titles for the handheld 3DS. The biggest announcement is that Super Mario Maker, released last year on the Wii U, is coming to the 3DS. Like the console version, players will be able to create, play, and share their very own Mario levels, and there will also be 100 Nintendo-created levels included when you buy it. Unfortunately, Nintendo says that only some, not all, of the levels created by users on the Wii U will be playable on the 3DS, although they haven’t said how many. Super Mario Maker hits the 3DS on December 2.

hat’s not the only big console franchise coming to the 3DS. Nintendo has announced that an all-new Pikmin game is in the works for the 3DS, making this the first game in the strategy series made for a handheld system. As you can see, it’s a sidescroller, but it will still offer the same basic Pikmin-leading gameplay. Nintendo hasn’t revealed a title yet for the new Pikmin game, but they’ve got some time; it will march onto the 3DS sometime in 2017.
If you like sports games, Nintendo announced Mario Sports Superstars. It sees Mario and other iconic Nintendo characters play different sports including soccer, baseball, tennis, and golf, and they even have horse racing. Most Mario sports games focus on one particular sport, so this one is a little different, and is no doubt inspired by the success of the Mario and Sonic at the Olympics series and Wii Sports. It arrives in Spring 2017.

Nintendo is getting proactive with Poochy. They’ve announced that the 2015 Wii U game Yoshi’s Woolly World is also coming to the 3DS, complete with new levels featuring Yoshi’s loveable dog companion Poochy. The character, or characters, haven’t been featured in a main Yoshi game in years, and this time around, the Poochy pups will be made up of yarn just like the other characters. There will of course be a new Yarn Poochy amiibo, landing the same day the game hits the 3DS on February 3, 2017.

Speaking of amiibo, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original Zelda game, Nintendo is releasing a new line of amiibo figures based on the franchise. There’s a new 8-bit version of Link, another Link figure based on his appearance in Ocarina of Time, and a two-pack that features the more cartoonish versions of Link and Zelda from Wind Waker. Those hit stores on December 2. In other Zelda news, Hyrule Warriors Legends has new DLC on the 3DS, available today. The DLC is based around the Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, letting players slay their enemies with those versions of Link.
All these announcements come as Nintendo is on the verge of releasing their new console, codenamed the NX. It’s rumoured to be a hybrid between a stationary console and a portable platform, but it’s good to see that Nintendo is still giving 3DS owners plenty of new stuff. The NX launches early next year.

I've only played Mario Tennis and enjoyed it, but I wouldn't mind trying out the others on the 3DS. Still not a fan of the Mario Party games, so I'll probably skip that one altogether.

I'm excited for Mario Sports Superstars & Pimkin!!

First off, we get a look at the different iterations that the Spirit of Justice’s main logo went through before settling on a final design.

Next, programmer Momoko Hirata explained a bit about her job writing programming scripts. These scripts control various things in the game, such as when a character will appear on the screen, what a character will say, which background will be displayed at a certain time, and which piece of background music will play.

Presentation lead Yoshimi Onishi goes on to explain how he and the other scripters use the scripts written by programmers like Hirata to convey characters’ personalities and craft scenes, as well as the challenges presented by having to script for the game’s 3D sprites as opposed to 2D.

Phoenix Was Almost A Mafia And Underworld Lawyer In Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice. September 23, 2016 . 1:30pm

Siliconera spoke with Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice game and scenario director Takeshi Yamazaki, who talked about how they almost had Phoenix work as a lawyer for the mafia and other underworld inhabitants.

17 comments Read >

The latest Ace Attorney game brings justice more of a spiritual twist, but Siliconera recently spoke to the game and scenario director, Takeshi Yamazaki, who talked about how things could’ve been a little darker in Phoenix Wright’s latest adventure.

When creating the theme for Spirit of Justice, Yamazaki held a brainstorming session where the team felt that the weak defeating the strong was what made a good turnabout. What other ideas were discussed? Were there any case ideas that didn’t work?

Takeshi Yamazaki, Game and Scenario Director: There was one real sticking point while I was writing the design document for Spirit of Justice, and that was how were we going to put Phoenix in a corner, given that he’d become this legendary lawyer in the course of this series.

One idea was to have Phoenix stand as a lawyer in an underground court that served the likes of the mafia and other underworld inhabitants. That underground court would hold trials and render judgment on those who’d broken the rules of the underworld, meaning that even Phoenix would have a tough time believing in his own clients. Furthermore, everyone involved in the trials would be members of the underworld, including witnesses and prosecutors, so naturally, there would be false testimonies, forged evidence, bribes, blackmail, and other dirty dealings going on. Under those circumstances, we figured even Phoenix would feel incredibly like a fish out of water.

In this latest dev blog, character model lead Keiji Ueda and lead character animator Ryota Fujii share a look into their roles in bringing characters to life and making them look their best in cutscenes.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice released two weeks ago for the Nintendo 3DS. However, Capcom is still sharing the game’s dev blogs, giving comprehensive behind-the-scenes looks at the work that went into bringing the game into existence.

In this latest dev blog, character model lead Keiji Ueda and lead character animator Ryota Fujii share a look into their roles in bringing characters to life and making them look their best in cutscenes.

Ueda mentioned the difficulties with character models and their articles of clothing, with clipping being a big issue.

He cited the character Rayfa’s cloak as being particularly troublesome, especially during the cutscene where she performs the Dance of Devotion.

Next, Fujii expanded a little more on the challenges of animating clothes, as well as “flowy” objects, such as Nahyuta’s hair and floating scarf. He went on to say that, while all of this could be accomplish with a physics engine, the animation team instead did it all manually, with the goal of making each character’s animations individual to them.

Final Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice Dev Blog Details The New DLC Episode “Turnabout Time Traveler”. October 3, 2016 . 8:30am

Capcom has shared the final development and localization blog for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice over on their official site. This time, this final entry focuses the newest DLC full-length Special Episode from the game, titled “Turnabout Time Traveler.”

First off, Masakazu Eguchi, the main writer for “Turnabout Time Traveler,” talked a bit about the episode, without giving away spoilers.
