They were not big deals, but they were some what big details. That would be like making Tatooine an grass filled area. There are big differences. Are they big deals? No, not at all I still love the movies to death, it was just some things yes saved them money, but they were different from the book is all we are saying. I don't think anyone here was saying it was "bad" because they did so but the details were quite different of what the books gave us.

It's just nitpicky stuff like that gets on my nerves. I wasn't implying they hates it, it's just stuff doesn't work out perfect like that.

It can, but I would not call it "nitpicky" it was quite a change from what was told. But yes nothing works out perfectly.

The point I was making was only that New Zealand is not really the all-purpose stand-in for Middle Earth that people often imagine it to be. You could probably get equally satisfactory results by shooting in Eastern Europe, and possibly better results by shooting in several different territories.

I'm a little late, but I'm very glad that Jackson is finally confirmed as the director. Not to mention the film actually being green-lit, which you'd think happened a while ago.

I think people need to just get over those tiny details. New Zealand was a very convenient shooting location for them. It saved them money too.

I think the representation of Gondor was the biggest problem. It seemed like a dying city marooned in a small, dying no man's land; just a few hundred meters from the power centers of the enemy.

This is in no way a political comment, but I did wonder whether PJ was trying to make some sort of oblique reference to Jerusalem. If he was, it wasn't really relevant to Gondor's role in the War of the Ring. Gondor was the free people's only remaining superpower.

I'm talking about comparing to the satisfaction of these films, people bring up the geography. It seems small in comparison to the overall films we got.

I have a feeling they are keeping MOST of Del Toro's designs. And Del Toro said they are open to them so... Who wouldn't? Peter Jackson wanted him to be director, writer and I think producer, so why wouldn't he keep his designs?

This thread is about The Hobbit (movie). To gripe pointlessly about how New Zealand's landscape deviated from your mental images of Lord of the Rings locales, try this Lord of the Rings thread.

On a related note there isn't really anything in The Hobbit that can't be found in NZ.

Rivendell? We'll rebuild it.
The Trollshaws? No problem.
Rivers? Many.
Primordial forest? You have no idea.
Weta Workshop, Weta Digital, and Park Road Post? Check.
Big lakes in mountainous regions? Yep. Got that too.
Mountains? Would a snow capped mountain range be enough?
A lonely mountain? Funnily enough, we have one of those as well. t:

It's pretty rare for me to be excited about a soundtrack but in this case I'm right there with you. The Rings scores are amazing.

Yes, the chance for Shore to return to Middle Earth has always been one of the biggest pluses with this project for me. His Lord of the Rings is a complete and utter masterpiece.

PJ was unable to find locations that suited the text of the descriptions of Rohan or Gondor. All of the geographical features you list above exist on every continent. There is nothing special about NZ that makes it a more suitable location for the Hobbit than a whole array of other countries with a temperate climate. Other countries seem to have a less Bolshevik workforce, too.
