Okay the writers guild strike thing

That's the way it works, swings both ways.

You're riding this line to determine value.
"We'll take our mitt and go home."
If it's devastating, you and your mitt are indispensable.
If the poor kid has a good mitt, and can play, wh00ps, maybe you weren't as indispensable as you thought.
I love it.

If that happened...in a way, that...the striking writers would be pissed, but if it improved the shows, why not? Writer's should be thankful that they were doing something they probably wanted to do for a living: Write. They got greedy, went on strike, and now they are basically bums. (Bums as in not making any money right now)

So you don't deserve a good salary if you're doing something you love? Also, it's not just doing something you love, you're entertaining millions of people and those people are buying your show on DVD and watching it online, shouldn't you be entitled to some of the money made from that? They aren't even being greedy, the landscape has changed dramatically since the last contract was written, there are more ways to watch TV now and the studios are using that to shortchange everyone involved with the show so they're able to make more money without paying the people responsible. Remember, this isn't just about the writers guild, the actors guild will be right behind when they're contract is up, asking for the same thing. It just so happens the writers contract was up first. However, I assume the actors don't deserve much money either, since they're doing something they love.

Hellz yeah! That is what should be happening! Black list every mu-f***er on the line, & start fresh with writers that are hungry. That will teach these sheep fight their own battles individually.

Yeah, you try to fight your battle individually, if there wasn't a union they'd probably get paid in peanuts. It's basically a strength in numbers thing right now. They're fighting probably some of the greediest people on the planet to get a small percentage of the massive amounts of money a studio is making off they're idea. Let's say you had an idea, told someone who could get that idea out to the masses, that person make a million dollars off your idea, you ask for a cut, he says f**k you, you'd be pissed right.

And if there wasn't a union for the writers, the writers would simply get a one time writers fee like they did in the 30s and 40s. If they complained, the studio would get another writer that wouldn't complain.

With the writers guild, the writers don't have to risk their jobs since there's strength in numbers. The studios still view the writers as individually replaceable. It's a bit tougher to replace every single member of the guild with one who isn't.

This seems to be the attitude in the workplace today though(outside of the entertainment industry).....the job market is such that there are enough qualified people out there that if you want to complain you can hit the bricks because you are replaceable.....

Instead of the employer giving raises to the employees that merit them, he fires them and hires new employees. It does save money in the short term, but ****s you in the long term since you'll never have any skilled employees

so the Office is no more?

wonder who's next

You might be replaced by a warm body, but not necessarily a good worker. That's the biggest complaint employers have; finding good quality workers.

A lot of places have high turnover. Basically hire a bunch of mediocre talent to get your **** done for about a year or six months, then when they quit or get fired, bring in a whole new crop.

Things need to freaking change for these writers and the average writer might not like it but this is total BS the way the system is. I think the writer should get paid for his work and there should be a contract for each job. So if a writer is paid to write for a TV show he/she must finish his writing through the end of that season, or until that specific job is done. It's total BS that these writers can stop production of shows taking EVERYONE out of work and hurting everyone's pay because their stupid Guild couldn't negotiate a better deal in the first place. All this is...is blackmail with the current system. Each writer should get paid for their work. Now if they are out of work and wish to regneotiate based on their own skills that's fine. However half of these writers if not more that are holding this whole thing up (just like in every other industry) are not productive and are using the Guild as a crutch. I agree they deserve more but they should get more based on their talent and body of work...not because of blackmail. And if one studio doesn't want to pay what an "in demand" writer is asking for...that writer doesn't have to take the job. If the writers is that good they'll get what they want. If the writer hasn't proven himself why should the studio risk paying him residuals before costs are covered.
