Lets talk aout what you liked about both versions. allow me to start

1990:
-Human Characters
-Plot
-Introduction to this universe
-DIalogue
-Heart
-The puppets were phenomanal
-Fights
-Splinter overall
-Pizza
-Balance of Humor and action
-Voice of donatello

2007:
-Look
-ABility to give different turtles different personalities
-Music (the turtles theme from the last one sounded nothing like the turtles)
-Asian influence
-Voices of the turtles, except for donatello

I loved the original, the puppets and animatronics were all great. I liked the live action original best.

I loved the 1990 flick for many reasons. But probably the main reason is due to the fact that the film remained very faithful to the spirit of those early Mirage comics. The comedic aspects, the action, the distinct personalities, the darker grittyness of the TMNT comic universe, basically everything worked.

With the TMNT 2007 film, I like it as a movie that chose not to simply rehash situations that we have already seen in the past, and give us something new, as well as a natural progression with the characters themselves which was the most satisfying.

In terms of comparing the two, I still prefer the original 1990 film as being the absolute best TMNT film thus far, but I do have to say that I most definately consider the 2007 flick the runner up as opposed to The Secret of the Ooze and Turtles in Time, which were a bit too influenced by the long running cartoon at the time for my tastes.

I agree with "The Shredder". I still prefer the 1990 movie over the TMNT, with TMNT close behind. I do however, still prefer live action to CGI, although I would be thrilled with a Live action movie with just CGI turtles and villains. People say CGI doesn't look that great when mixed with live action, but check out the Transformers stuff; it's getting to a point where it blends perfectly. Seeing the turtles in a live action movie is more interesting to me than a CGI movie, which I still consider a cartoon.

But I still really enjoyed TMNT, so whatever they do is fine.

Only thing I hated about the original is how ridiculous Splinter looked.

I watched the orignal three movies, and I shifting my stance a bit I still like TMNT because it was something new and the CG turtles looked intresting. But watching the first live action movie it shows why it's still underrated superhero movie it had what made the orignal comics popular and it wasn't too water down for the kids(meaning no blood when they fought the foot ninjas) it kept true to its roots like most the great comic book to movies.

As for bringing back the live action part of the movies do it 100% no real people mixed in with CG turtles and splinter, real people mixed in with dudes in updated turtles suits. If they needed a model go back to one and some parts of three.

1990: Everything

2007: Nothing

Of course, that's a vast generalisation, but for that reason, it generally holds. You can only invent the wheel once.

I'm one of the few TMNT fans out there who doesn't totally worship the original. I mean, it's good, yeah, but it's quite corny and has become somewhat dated. I think both the 2003 series and TMNT are better than it just because of their serious nature.

And also because of the fact that the 2003 series mirrors that of the original TMNT mirage comics. Which was stories that had action, with comedy. The original cartoon was essentially a series that was comedic, with some action.

And although I will always have an affinity for the original toon since it was indeed the one I grew up watching, I have no problem in saying that the 2003 incarnation is ultimately, the superior version of the two.

I loved just about everything in the new TMNT film. I've been a fan of the Turtles for many years (mostly due to the '80s cartoons), but I missed out on the 2003 series. I did like the '90s films a lot, although the third did lack quite a bit in terms of story. I mean, they used Casey as a babysitter, and cut him out of Part II completely! Argh! Also, I think it sucked that they recast April for those movies. Judith Hoag was perfect for it!

With this new story, I was very skeptical at first, especially once I learned of Sarah Michelle Gellar's casting of April (having ditched the whole "Buffy phenomena a few years ago). Then when Chris Evans was revealed as Casey, I was thrilled since he was great as Johnny in "Fantastic Four". Once the full trailer came out, I made up my mind to check it out, and was more than pleasantly surprised. My favorite turtle has always been Mikey, so getting him right was essential. I saw the clips, and was extremely impressed. The Leo vs. Raph scene was terrific, and I loved Mako as Splinter, too. Once the DVD comes out next month, I am grabbing it! COWABUNGA!!! (sorry, had to say it just once.)

Exactly.

To me, the TMNT work much better as an action/superhero franchise with a bit of humor rather than an all out parody.

For everyone who posted a comment about this topic I just have one question. Now some of you may agree or disagree to this but, what if they made a TMNT movie like they did Transfomers. Real people playing the parts for the human characters but CGI turtles. If they made it like that would you like better than a full CGI movie? Your thoughts.

Note to all: I believe the topic starter wished to discuss the 1990 and 2007 feature films -- not the television series or comic books.

The 1990 version is the best by far it was quite faithful (especially in looks) to the original comics and had some fantastic acting from the main cast in the suits watch them closely there is always something new to see in thier gestures and movements.

definetly

Serious does not equal superior. That's such a lowbrow conceit.

I will always love the original film, i think its mainly because it has sentimental vlaue to me as i was kid watching turtles on the big screen for the first time!!

I loved this years movie too, CGI was amazing and the action scenes were incredible.

But when it comes down to it i'd prob put the original slightly higher than the 2007 one.

personally, i dont think they fleshed out the turtles' personalities enough. donny is the tech guy, like abe from hellboy; mikey is the very lighthearted adventurous naive surfer; raph is rebelious, tough, impatient, like wolverine; leonardo is the leader. he's in my opinion closer to a 100% ninja than any of them. I dont think they showed that side of leo very much in the original, and i dont think they showed enough of donny being a little introverted and intelligent. i think in the new one, they had those personalities very distinctly present, but they were one dimensional. except for raph, who seems to always be the least one dimesnional in every movie.

i wish mikey had been turtle titan, lol. we would have leo as the jungle ghost or w/e, raph as the nightwatcher, mikey as the turtle titan, and donny as the oracle.

the ninjustice league! the legion of sewer heroes? the turtle titans? shelltastic 4?

Brilliant movie. Love the Leo/Raph fight in the rain. It was just awesome. Liked this movie better than the original. And liked it better than the Incredibles.

I loved the original live action movie & turtle voice actors. Loved the turtle designs & action sequences in the new TMNT movie but didn't care that much for the turtle voice actors. April O'Neil & Casey Jones were a bit to young in the movie they should have made them a bit older. Although it was the best way to go for the action it just didn't feel right with the turtles not being live action but that can be overlooked after I watch the movie a few more times & get used to seeing them as a cgi cartoon movie.

I liked a lot of aspects about the new. Like the speed and agility of the turtles and portrayal of the characters... the rivalry between Leo and Raph... but I still prefer the original... simply due to the fact that it was less cartoony... I hated the stupid "monsters from another dimension" crap and the fact that the humans looked unrealistic... but I loved the fight scenes!!

My only beef with TMNT was that it was billed as very dark and based heavily on the comics. To me it felt like it was an episode of the Fox 2003 cartoon. The original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles however was a dark movie influenced heavily by the comics. I liked TMNT but the original is far better. Still TMNT was better than I anticipated.
