South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been arrested over the fatal shooting of his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria, local media say.
What was such a good feel good story about a handicapped athlete rising above adversity suddenly turns grim.

A shame. Apparently he mistook her for a burglar and shot her in the head...

Its all over the news here in South Africa, some of it just doesnt add up imo.

I'm now hearing that it might have been a Valentines surprise gone wrong...

It's hard for me to believe he somehow mistook his own girlfriend for a burglar. Unless she was straight up dressed in all black with a mask on or something. Which I doubt.

This is the first thing that came to my mind, I mean we have to assume they were sharing a bed, so surely he could have seen that she wasnt next to him sleeping, also you have to have pretty good aim to shoot someone in the head right?

Guy got a bit trigger happy
Pistorius revealed that he sleeps with a number of guns in his bedroom. He even took the journalist from the New York Times to a nearby firing range to teach him the proper technique for shooting. Interviewer Michael Sokolove wrote: “Pistorius was a good coach. A couple of my shots got close to the bull’s-eye, which delighted him.

“‘Maybe you should do this more,’ he said. ‘If you practiced, I think you could be pretty deadly.’

“I asked him how often he came to the range. ‘Just sometimes when I can’t sleep,’ he said.”

Reports are now coming in saying there wasn't a sign of forced entry and that there had been domestic disputes in the past.

Not looking too good.

One of her last tweets:

Reeva Steenkamp ‏@reevasteenkamp What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? #getexcited #ValentinesDay

Damn...

judging by the police conference they clearly don't believe this was a case of mistaken identity.

apparently there had been several instances of domesic violence at his house. the neighbours called the police after hearing the shots. apparently they also heard loud shouting / argument earlier the night

The guys you always think have it all together in their life....you never know.

Just sounds tragic. I almost believe the story about it being an accident. Those things happen.

I don't know if I buy the whole accident thing. I guess the truth will come out sooner or later.

I do, simply because he expressed so much paranoia about it before. I'm not saying I have a ton of sympathy for him. In fact this is the exact kind of sh** I talk about when people have told me to buy a gun for protection; that the most likely target is not an intruder but someone coming to surprise you for a benign reason. However I don't buy that he was out to kill his girlfriend, at least not intentionally.

Accidents do happen and the way she was shot in the arm and head points to a paniced shooter, but that can be staged. Either way, accident or not, this is tragic.:(

I'm totally with you. There are articles out there where he expressed a lot of concern with the rising violence in the area. It seemed he also didn't totally trust his security because they "might be in on it".

My wife expressed interest in getting a gun for home protection (she really freaks out at night when I'm not home). I refused because I figured it would be me taking the bullet some night. I come home earlier than expected from a night out with the boys, she freaks out and ... BLAM ... No more Steintym.

Sad...she was very attractive. He shot her 4 times...To the head and arm

My prayers are with her family and friends. I really hope hes brought to justice. I see a life sentence or death penalty in his future........

What if they had an arguement and she left. Then she came back later without notifying him. I could almost buy into it being an accident, but this could of been resolved with one glance. Also knowing she wasn't in the house should of been a thought in the back of his mind.

One of the big reasons why women should never stay in an abusive situation. I don't want to be misconstrued as saying this was her fault because it absolutely wasn't. Only Pistorius is the one to blame but if she would have dumped him a while back then she probably would have still been alive.

A shame that such a beautiful and seemingly caring woman had to go out in such a gruesome way.

Even if he was/is mad at her, he fits the profile of someone who would probably shoot first and ask questions later. So I'm not surprised he shot her once or four times because like you've noted he fit the description of someone who is paranoid and triggerhappy, but not necessarily someone who is abusive.

One moment he's in the spotlight in the Olympics & now he's in a different sort of "spotlight" being prosecuted for murder, just tragic.

There are very few heroes left int he world for children to look up to. Pro Athletes using performance drugs, Olympians on trial for murder....We need a real life Superman..and soon.

I don't think kids need people to look up to anyway. Part of the problem is people putting athletes on a pedestal that they could never live up to. It better to imbue kids with enough confidence, stength of character and morality in themselves that they don't have to go looking for it in others that can't fulfil that impossible ideal.
