A policeman stabbed his son through the heart while demonstrating a tribal killing, an inquest heard today.

Conor Johnson, 11, of Littlehampton, West Sussex, died from a single thrust of the knife by his father, Pc Ian Johnson.

Worthing Magistrates' Court heard that Mr Johnson had a passion for self-sufficiency and spent many weekends teaching Conor how to track animals and live off the land. Conor was given his first knife at the age of five.

On the day before he died - August 13 last year - Conor was staying at his father's flat and Mr Johnson was cooking them dinner while describing a tribal killing, he told Dr Philippa Fabb, a junior anaesthetist at Worthing Hospital.

She said: "He was describing some sort of tribal killing that occurred to someone. He was holding a knife to him. He said his son didn't like it and his son slipped forward on to the knife."

He had asked his son to hold still while he demonstrated the tribal killing.

Assistant deputy coroner Martin Milward recorded a verdict of accidental death.

I laughed...then I saw that the kid died...:(

And the award for biggest moron ever goes to...

Crap man...................... :(

I'm finding it really hard to believe that he moved forward so hard that he impaled himself on the knife....

He might have gotten scared and tried to get off his dad's arms.

Well if he slipped onto it....

thats really sad, but the dad shouldn`t have a knife in the first place everyone is ment to be giving them in, and hes a policeman!

I do feel bad for the father but at the same time I feel like smacking him hard across the face. So so stupid.

I mean, c'mon. Holding a knife to your child isn't a good idea anyway.

It does sound fishy...I can't believe that story as it is told...there has to something more to it.

As incomplete as the story sounds, it sounds like it could happen. The father was an idiot for having used a real knife and using his son as a prop.

Damn cops

accidental death my ass. you don't hold a knife up to your 11 year old son and tell him to hold still while you demonstrate a tribal killing.

It really doesn't sond plausible. Do you know the momentum that the kid would need to have generated in order to "slipped forward on to the knife" and for the knife to plunge that deep that it would cause a fatal wound. The kid would have had to be running across the room to cause that much thrust. Can you truly imagine moving forward with enough force to put a knife through your chest that would cause a death? I can't. The Father had to have thrust forward at the same time as his kid moving toward him to have enough force to push the knife into his chest.

The father was an idiot, he should not have been using a real knife or demonstrating on a real person.

How does the father feel? Stupid and guilty.

How about the mother though? Damn, her (ex?)husband kills her son.

It doesn't take very much to stab an adult, much less a child. The reason why you see people stabbing quickly in movies and such is so the person being stabbed doesn't have time to react to stop it, not because it's hard to push a knife through a chest.
