In these boards, I've heard a number of different opinions on which storyline should be used in the next X-Men film, should there be one (fingers crossed).
Age of Apocalypse seems to be a popular choice, along with Endsong and Days of the Future Past. But, as I've come to believe, there's only one true option...
OPERATION: ZERO TOLERANCE
In the comics, Operation: Zero Tolerance was fueled by the recent Onslaught events and the death of Graydon Creed. Creed could be killed in an opening scene and Onslaught could be replaced with the events on Alcatraz Island and the deaths of the innocent soldiers at Jean Grey's hand.
For those of you who are out of the loop, Operation: Zero Tolerance (OZT) introduced the villainous Bastion, a Sentinel in disguise, who used an army of Prime Sentinels to attack and eventually take control of the Xavier Institute, while capturing several X-Men. Bastion then gained control of the Xavier Protocols, a series of information created by the Professor himself on instructions on the quickest and most efficient way to kill off memebers of the X-Men.
Now, on the silverscreen, this story could provide for an emotionally and visually stunning film. In the past, Sentinels have been cut out of scripts because of budget issues. If this issue resurfaces, Sentinels could be dropped once more in favor of Prime Sentinels (Sentinel/Human Cyborgs) or perhaps human soldiers with advanced ordnance.
Not only would the X-Men face Bastion and his army of Sentinels, the mutants would also have to face a world that has turned its back on them. Stripped of their rights and of their very citizenship, the X-Men are thrown into this civil unrest. With government funded hunting of mutants, war is on the horizon. Fingers are pointed and blood is shed.
A dark horizon, indeed.
