Researchers at Connecticut College have found evidence that proves that Oreo cookies—at least for lab rats—are as addictive as cocaine.

Neuroscience senior Jamie Honohan devised the study in order to research the impact of high-fat and high-sugar foods in low-income neighborhoods:

“My research interests stemmed from a curiosity for studying human behavior and our motivations when it comes to food,” said Honohan. “We chose Oreos not only because they are America’s favorite cookie, and highly palatable to rats, but also because products containing high amounts of fat and sugar are heavily marketed in communities with lower socioeconomic statuses.”
To carry out the study, Honohan and two other students devised a maze. On one side of the maze, hungry rats would find an Oreo. On the other side, hungry rats would find (groan) rice cakes. Unsurprisingly, all the rats gravitated toward the Oreo, and like all cultured creatures, they would “
break it open and eat the middle first.”

The researchers compared the results of their study to a similar study in which rats were either given a shot of cocaine or morphine on one side of the maze or a shot of saline on the other. It turns out that the rats conditioned with Oreos spent as much time on the “drug” side of the maze as those who were conditioned with actual drugs.

Even more worrisome, the researchers found that the Oreos “activated significantly more neurons than cocaine or morphine.” So basically, if you give a mouse a cookie, who knows what the heck he'll ask for next. He might ask for some coke, but he'll definitely want more cookies.

In conclusion, junk food is incredibly addictive, Oreos are delicious, and that other side of the maze sounds like a terrible place to be.

Soon the low income house holds will being using the Oreos intravenously

I guess that means I can use and quit cocaine whenever I want. Assuming I ever start to begin with. I've got a package of Oreos but almost no desire to eat them. In fact I think they might've gone stale.

Nothing a cool glass of milk won't fix, then they get the hooks into ya!

Only way to eat cocaine Oreos is with milk.

We need someone to do a scarface photoshop with oreos.

Oreos without milk are useless.

Somebody once told me that if you want to make the filling for Oreos all you have to do is take a tub of Crisco (basically lard) and whip it with equal parts sugar. YUMMY!

Nope... that's completely wrong. It's high fructose syrup now instead of sugar.

I don't even like Oreos.

More of a soft baked Chocolate chip kinda guy.

Do you just go looking for new stories on Google to make new threads out of? :funny:

Haha ya I go to mad different sites and anything that peaks my interest I share with the hype because I like to have conversations with similarly minded people. Being a DJ is pretty boring during the week. When I start my day job tomorrow the articles will come a little later :woot:

They can do all of the money-wasting studies they want, but simple logic will tell you that someone who has a craving for Oreos or Doritos isn't likely to address that by robbing a bank or doing sexual favors.

If this was the study that Connecticut College chose to do, how bad must the other options have been?:wow:

idk about that. After a whole package of Oreos I feel like a sick fat ****.

After a package of cocaine I'm just ready for the next package of cocaine.

Wait a minute... is this one of those things where you say, 'hey, did you know if you drink 100 cups of coffee, you can see through time?' to get someone to do it?

Because now I have to see first hand if Oreos are as addictive as cocaine. Damn you!

Me: Hi, one cocaine please.
Drug Dealer: ....

I'll scarf down an entire box of Oreos, whenever one is nearby. But when they are gone, I don't exactly miss them or have to go out to buy another box. Heck, I think I haven't had an Oreo in months.

Oreos are good to eat while you're in the waiting room before the dentist calls you in.

Well, at least they're healthier for you than snorting cocaine.

How long before we see people crushing and snorting Oreos or rubbing them into their gums! ;)

I really think it is entirely possible that kids always love when snacking. Are we being stimulating factor in junk food addiction addictive things that make them unconsciously?
