now i know some are going to ask, "does this really need a thread", but I was wondering why the creators of this didn't just title this "Xmen Origins" instead of "First class". Knowing how fans are, couldn't they have just used that title to not anger the purists who know that the first class consisted of: cyclops, jean, angel, beast, and ice man. If the movie does well, is the sequel going to be called Xmen: Second Class? Which doesn't sound right at all lol. Did they ever give a reason for the title? I mean for wolverine it was called Xmen origins: Wolverine, which makes sense because it was a story based on wolverine, but was it necessary for this? I was curious what others thought. At this point I know nothing is going to change, but I wonder if it's ever been said in an interview or something.

I think it should be changed to X-Men: Origins because calling it First Class just raises confusion and creates a different expectation for what this film is about.

I agree that naming the sequel would be kind of goofy too but to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with something completely different because if there is anything the X-Men series can't do it's be consistent with it's titles.

X-Men
X2: X-Men United
X-Men: The Last Stand
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
X-Men: First Class

They're probably avoiding using the "X-Men Origins" title because that would make two films in the series have a consistent title, which is unthinkable.

X-Men: Deadly Genesis

:3

Should have been X-Men Begin. Then go FC for the sequel.

X-Men: Deadly Genesis

This would have been a great title...and Darwin first appeared in the comic book of that title. They should have changed the "First Class" title once Singer came onboard with his new ideas.

I think you guys all have a little to much faith in the mainstreams thinking,

Id say 75 percent of the mainstream public doesn't know that Cyclops,Jean Greay,Beast and Angel were the FIRST CLASS.

So i dont know what you mean by confusing people,

OK so this isn't the first class of the comics, big deal guys there going for something different doesn't mean its gonna make the movie worst.

Movies change the comic story lines ALL THE TIME. Nothing new here and this isn't even that big of a deal.

Besides in this verse THIS IS THE FIRST CLASS, maybe 20 years from now some guy will direct an X-men movie using the comics First Class , but for know in this movie verse THIS IS THE FIRST CLASS.

What the heck would they have called it?

X-MEN ORIGINS: X-MEN ORIGINS?

It's Xavier and Magneto's first class. It's also a pun. First class, as in, classy people.

It is creating confusion among the fanbase. Many fans thought it was going to be based off the comic First Class and others thought it was going to be the theoretical First Class set up in the movies. Professor X called Storm, Cyclops, and Jean some of his first students. Now we find out they came 20 years after his first students. Making them nowhere close to his first students unless there is an X-Men Deadly Genesis scenario here where Xavier tries to cover up his original class or where Xavier quits schooling for 20 years. Either way, it's confusing to most of the fanbase, even the ones who aren't demanding it be the original First Class (like me).

To say that mainstream audiences won't care is pretty obvious because they won't care what they call it. They probably won't even care if it's a good movie. They saw Wolverine didn't they? Just because the mainstream audience doesn't care doesn't mean it's a good choice.

How about just X-Men Origins? That's what everyone has been suggesting (though now I'm leaning way more towards X-Men: Deadly Genesis).

And the focus isn't on their First Class. They're keeping the title when the essentially threw out the original concept for First Class about the actual First Class students getting into whacky Harry Potter-like adventures and made it about how Xavier and Magneto met and broke up. This movie essentially was born out of the ashes of the scrapped First Class movie and Magneto movie. It's not the same movie so they should really change the title.

Well.. technically X-Men: First Class is the same title format as X-Men: The Last Stand... so the title should be something like X-Men First Class: X-Men Created

X-Menarche

But seriously, the title is fine. X-Men Origins is pretty lame and they are trying to avoid Wolverine and going back to what worked very well.

"Origins" may have appeared in the title but it seems that the plan to wrap everything in that banner dissolved after the awful Wolverine film.

what about "The Birth of the X-men" or "X-Men Beginnings"? too much like batman? i kind of just like X-Men Origins. It keeps with what they were going with Wolverine and it doesnt have first class in it, which could have been set up for the sequel. first could have been x men origins, then x men: first class, then x men legacy which takes place years after the first class where you see them in their 90's costumes, but updated. the fourth one would be x men apocalypse, then x men forever. there you go, five titles, five movies that work out lol. i think anyways.

xmen origins
xmen first class
xmen legacy
xmen apcolpyse
xmen forever
xmen the end

I think the figure is lot lower than that because a lot of general public is familiar with what's been shown on TV and ALL the films. So they would be right to question why, for example, Jean and Scott dont figure in First Class when in X1 Xavier states they were amongst his first students.

The title isn't really indicative of them going back to what works well and avoiding Wolverine since it was called that way back when X-Men Origins: Wolverine was being made.

Yes it is. X-Men Origins: Wolverine sounds far too similar to X-Men Origins. People are going to see the similarities in the title and be turned off.

X-Men: United and X-Men: The Last Stand sound similar when compared to X-Men: First Class.

They are trying to distance themselves from Wolverine as far as they can and rightfully so.

Keyword in that statement you just said AMONGST..

He he didn't say they were THE first students.

I get the strong feeling that the end of the movie hints at Cyclops and Jean Grey coming in the next film.

The only problem is that according to the original timeline Cyclops and Jean are probably babies during this first class. So the only way they'll be in the sequel is if they jump ahead a decade or two, and that would make Jean, Ororo, and Scott nowhere close to the first students. On the other hand though, there are already timeline problems since Xavier is supposed to be crippled and Magneto less before the end of this 60s movie when he's shown walking and hanging out with Magneto after the 60s in Wolverine and X3. So if they ignore that aspect of the timeline they could ignore the fact that Jean and Scott would be far too young to be anywhere close to his first students.

But then again, if they're going to ignore the timeline to that extent as a set up for the sequel then one has to wonder why they couldn't just put Storm, Cyclops and Jean in this film. Because if that's the case then the excuse of "it's set in the 60s so they're too young" goes out the window.

It's not as if Xavier and Magneto become mortal enemies who never speak to each other again. We see how chummy they are throughout the course of the first 3 films. It's not unrealistic for Xavier to ask for Magnetos help in what could possibly be his second attempt at forming the X-Men (recruiting Jean at the beginning of X3).

I'll grant that. But then what about Xavier walking around? :cwink:

We just think he's walking. George Lucas is currently re-filming those scenes for an upcoming bluray re-release. ;)

As to why Xavier is walking in X3...and yet we're going to see why he can't walk...

Minor
I believe X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is going to move through the decades a bit.

I'm thinking that the story will jump ahead here and there to show Erik and Charles meeting, them forming the school (I mean, even with mutant powers it would take years to create all the sub-basements and such in secrecy), and then their eventual falling out. I'm hoping this will allow some wiggle room to connect to the trilogy, without stepping on one too many toes along the way.
