Figured I’d make a thread for this. Just watched it for the first time in like 20 years. Great great watch. I dont know i’d call it a “great” film but I love these type of 90s “crisis/disaster” films with an all star cast trying to solve a problem. The climax was really gripping imo as Dustin Hoffman and Cuba Gooding were trying to stop the infected town from being incinerated. Highly recommend, its in Netflix streaming and I have a sneaking feeling a lot of people will be revisiting this movie lol

Didn't watch it for years but had to revisit it few days back and only made me angry that Petersen wasn't able to make his Batman vs Superman. A great movie made by one of the most entertaining 90s / early 00s directors.

There's a great book called Tales from Development Hell that goes into the process of how this movie came about based on an article The Hot Zone about the ebola virus being released in America. Ridley Scott was involved in the competing film, but this one got made instead. By all accounts, the Ridley Scott version would've been the better version and closer to the original story.

They actually ended up making The Hot Zone as a miniseries last year.

I saw it was on Netflix I have not seen it in years I may have to re visit it

I haven't seen this for years. I don't remember what happens in it.

There's another virus movie from the 70s called "The Cassandra Crossing" with an all-star cast.

Also people might want to check out 12 Monkeys, both the 90s film with Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe and Brad Pitt, or the recent TV series adaptation with Aaron Stanford and Amanda Schull. They're both about an apocalyptic virus and trying to go back in time to stop it.

Haha I actually saw this again last week on Netflix. I think I saw it in school a looong time ago and didn’t really pay attention back then, but with everything going on right now it kept my attention. Pretty entertaining movie. Made me miss the era of 90s disaster movies.

Another one I want to rewatch is Contagion.

Classic film, not seen it in years however it's one of my favs from the 90's.

Contagion looks like the much more serious, straight faced version of Outbreak.

Watched this quite a lot as a kid/teenager back when it came out, may re-visit if I end up in isolation.

I re-watched this a couple of days ago along with Contagion and god do I still love this movie. It's so damn entertaining and I just adore the cast here. They really don't make these kind of fun, 90's, big budget disaster movies anymore and I really miss that. This and Twister are some of my favorite disaster films ever.

It’s funny how time changes things. I remember this getting terrible reviews at the time.

Goes to show the generation growing up will have fondness for the films now that aren’t so well received.

I can see why it got bad reviews, its silly in some places—i can see stuffy critics rolling their eyes at a lot of the plot logic and leaps but its fun, riveting and has a charming cast much in the same way Independence Day is.

I rewatched this the other day, along with all the new Planet of The Apes movies.

Outbreak is still pretty decent, but I don’t like it as much as I did then.

Like Outbreak,Twister is. Underrated.

Watched this last night. Very entertaining. I quite enjoyed the plot and it managed to balance the spectacle with the horror of the virus by upping the stakes. It never got away from the people which is important.

True, but I remember it being a crowdpleaser and a moderate hit.

People back then weren't reliant on a RottenTomatoes, would watch what they felt like watching based on the trailers and make up their own minds.

There are so many great movies which got bad reviews back in the day, but were well liked by the crowds and went on to become cult movies, and in some cases bonafide classics!

I mean, just read some of the original reviews for some of Tim Burton's most beloved movies, or John McTiernan's Predator and even Die Hard.

Fair enough, but I don’t remember anyone talking about Outbreak post-2000 until this pandemic started happening.

I "ironically" rewatched it right before the pandemic broke out it in China. And with how nerd and IP skewed most movie websites and journalists are, it just doesn't fit that category. But there are so many classic movies which deserve to be talked about more instead of, for the 1000th time, Star Wars, and offering the very same, very old arguments.

I just caught this, and it was interesting.

Though I won’t lie after #MeToo it was kind of strange seeing both Kevin Spacey and Cuba Gooding Jr. in a movie together.

**** , man. Didn't know that.
