There have been films that are considered underrated, but what of those that are OVERRATED? IMO, there's alot of films that lots of critics, and general audiences loved that I have yet too like alot..

Examples:

Scarface: Good movie, but still..isn't GREAT

Pulp Fiction: I might be stirring something up, but, It's probably just my hate with John Travolta and Uma Thurman but I just can't seem to like this movie as much as I should.

Anyways, discuss. Don't bash.

of our particular genre

batman begins
x2
spidey 2

of any genre

anything by tarantino and the godfather (2 was fine for the flashbacks).
anything with will ferrel

What's up with all these threads, really? :o

I agree with Scarface. People act like it's freaking Shakespeare or something. It has very little depth to it. It's entertaining though.

I just thought it would be interesting what opinions some people have of overrated films.

If the mods would like too close, go right ahead, but I thought this would be a good, simple thread.

Bourne Ultimatum, Casino Royale, and Iron Man for me, dont get me wrong, i thought all were very good movies, but some peoples claims of them being the best in their genre are just WAY off IMO.

Rocky Horror Picture Show: It's a mildly entertaining musical, but I don't see why so many film nerds of my generation say it's so brilliant.
Age of Innocence: Most achingly dull movie ever nominated for an Oscar. And I tend to like to see movies like this.
Spiderman 1
Batman
Gladiator--good movie, but not Best Picture Oscar worthy
Braveheart--ditto

The Davinci Code- overhyped and dissapointing, big fuss about nothing
The Bourne Supremacy- blah forgettable
The Bourne Ultimatum-no point, nothing new is learned about anything
A History of Violence- awful movie...
40 year old Virgin- funny but waaay too overrated

I don't think the DaVinci Code was overrated. It was pretty critically blasted when it was released. It made a ton of money, but I don't think its considered a quality movie.

To quote a friend: "Juno is the most overrated piece of crap ever."

In my opinion people, who consider Godfather, Scarface, Batman Begins, Casino Royale, Iron Man and The Bourne trilogy overrated, have no idea what does "overrated" means. I think people are just too greedy to just say "it was great movie" to a real masterpiece and to look/sound interested they say this to films, which aren't actually good. Still, everything what I've said is my opinion.

Juno is very overrated.
I had a great time at the theaters and it was funny but whats with the oscar buzz?
I don't know if it was THAT good. And although I was rooting for Ellen Page when she got the nomination Im happy she didn't get it because her performance wasn't exceptional. It was good but not oscar good.

edit:
btw, I don't really like mafia movies but I can see why people fell in love with the Godfather. Despite not liking mafia films I must say its a good movie (not on my top list but really good)...that being said I didn't like Scarface that much but again Im biased.
But for superhero movies I have to admit that Iron man IS overrated and I loved it. Its just not that good, Im still bewildered by how it got a 94% tomatometer...wtf!?
Please someone tell me what was so special about Iron man? Because in my opinion it was just good ol summer blockbuster fun (and theres nothing wrong with that)

Indiana jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Ghost rider

Ghost Rider is overrated? I don't think I have spoke to one person that thought it was a good movie.

Anything with Adam Sandler.

The Matrix. T2.

A lot of what people consider great movies I see as great action but really boring in between the action

LOTR and Bourne series specifically.

-Scarface (good, but not the second coming or anything and far behind Godfather or Goodfellas in terms of gangster movies, not to mention the classics)

-Braveheart (I watched it for the first time in years and it is a good movie. But it did not age well. All the action movie clichés of the 1990s I didn't realize were in full force in my childhood are prevalent. The movie suffers from the same "I am Mel Gibson a great action star" formulaic John Wayne-wannabe storyline that killed The Patriot).

speaking of that:

-The Patriot (a really, really, really, bad movie).

-Million Dollar Baby (this beat The Aviator and Sideways?! Reeeeeally?)

-Fargo (A good movie, but not the Coens' best and I was extremely let down after all the hype)

-No Country for Old Men (I said it! :p)

-Napoleon Dynamite (How did something this unfunny become so popular? Damn you MTV!)

-Equilibrium (in the internet geek circles this was being built up like it was Citizen Kane. I should've seen the disappointment coming).

-The Maltese Falcon (It was the first of its "film cycle," noir, but there are so many better entries in the movement. I feel simply because it was first and made Bogart a star it gets put at the top of the heap. It is good, but there are so many better noirs out there).

-Full Metal Jacket

-Timothy Dalton's Bond movies (among Bond fans, not the general public)

-Transformers

-Crash

Now I must run from the oncoming flaming. :D
