Hey,

After picking up the new comics this week and finding out that my local comic book store is celebrating its 5th anniversary - Happy Birthday Heroes World! - I was wondering if any Hypers own, or have started their own stores. If so, what did it involve? Is it fun? Is it profitable?

When I was 16 to 18 I would dream of owning a comic book store.

But I imagine that it's actually quite boring and hard.

Reading comics all day boring? You would become the ultimate geek :D haha

Most business don't last 5 years, and it takes about 5 years to turn a profit (gotta payback that loan) So a comic store being around that long is an achivement in this day in age.Is it fun? yes Is it profitable? well, you won't be retiring early based on your earning of owning a comic store.

One advantage of owning your own comic book store would be that you could talk to all the hot chicks (if any) that buy comic books.

After I make my first million, I might invest in a comic book store

My local store seem to make most of their money selling all the related comic items. Busts, statue's, toys. He seems to make a killing selling gaming cards to dumb 12year olds who will fork out 15 bucks for one card.

Same here. My guy says he actually makes very little on the comics as opposed to the cards. He's been open longer than the five years, but it's hard. He's not raking in the millions. I think the most successful shops must be guys like Mile High Comics who have a lot of buying power and buy up massive collections and then sell them to us online as well as having a couple mega stores in Colorado. But they have to be the exception. Most shops I've been to you can tell they are just barely hanging in there.

Comic stores are cool, I'd want to own one that was similar to a Midtown Comics

I imagine it's enjoyable. I mean, whenever I go in, the guys working there are chatting to the customers since we're all regular, and talking about or reading comics. Of course, making a profit is the aim, but it seems to be an enjoyable way of making a profit.

Then again, I've been in shops with guys who aren't friendly at all, and it seems much more formal in them. Those are usually the really small shops in which you're afraid to touch anything or ask any questions. And they always seem packed with merchandise so there's hardly any room to walk around.

I think Morg owns one.

I'm nowhere near business savvy enough to own a comic store. So many go under because they overorder a certain title and not enough people buy it; causing it to sit on the shelf.

I did, got out of it, sort of. I sell comics at my place of business but for the past 2 years I noticed selling comics have really gone down. I don't make as much profit as I used too years ago

I work at one. It's a lot of fun to be able to debate stuff with the customers.

I would love to own a store just for that reason, Dew. But there is no money in it. It would be good as a hobby, like if I had won the lottery and had money to burn. :D

The one store where the customer's NOT always right?:D

No, sometimes the customer is stupid enough to say things like "X3 was the best movie I have ever seeeeen!" and then I just have to prove them wrong

I saw a guy in the store I go to saying the animated Bat-films were way better than Begins and then he said F4 was awesome. The owner was just  .

I worked at one while the owner's son went off to Iraq, lets just say he came back and im working elsewhere now.

Damn, he might have an argument there. Not about F4 though.

I would be doing the same thing, LOL. But I do know some people who would probably agree with that customer. :p

I liked F4, everything except Doom, and Jessica Alba's ****

I could see someone make a case for MOTP,(a case for it being better but not way better) but not ALL of them. Subzero and MOTB were meh.

I paid little attention to that. I liked Johnny and Ben's relationship, I liked Reed's clueless, I liked the fact that it felt like the comic books, the family aspect. The F4 aren't the X-Men. You can be hokey with them. It's ok. They are a hokey book.
