Paladins touts one million early access players, starts console beta sign-ups

Is Hi-Rez Studios’ Paladins having a good week or a bad one? It’s… kind of hard to tell, to be honest. It probably didn’t help matters that the game’s had to fend off accusations of being a mere Overwatch clone, yet it seems to be doing very well for itself in early access so far.


Hi-Rez reports that Paladins has racked up over one million players during the first 10 days on Steam, which probably takes some of the zing out of those Overwatch comparisons.




Even better for the game is the imminent start of closed beta testing for Paladins’ console versions. Players can register for either the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 tests and cross their fingers that they get into the upcoming test. Hi-Rez emphasized that, as with the PC version, Paladins on console will also be free-to-play.Read more

Paladins welcomes Sha Lin the archer for Open Beta 37

Open Beta 37 is imminent for Paladins, introducing a brand-new champion to the roster of playable characters. This would be Sha Lin, an “old-style drawstring archer” who does strong targeted damage from far away.


Other changes coming with Open Beta 37 is the debut of sprays, earnable titles, a new stat (or combination of stats) that deal with flanking, some map adjustments (particularly to Timber Mill) to smooth out trouble spots, and customizable post-match presentation. The team also said that it has three maps in development internally.
Patch notes will arrive later this week.

Paladins touts a playerbase of 4 million

Hi-Rez is not above tooting its own horn, especially when it has a huge number to celebrate. Today the studio announced that Paladins has already accumulated four million players during its open beta. This number doesn’t include those expected to come when the multiplayer shooter arrives on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 soon.


There’s even more good news coming Paladins’ way. The game is supposed to expand into China thanks to a partnership with Tencent, and Hi-Rez has plans to host an Evie’s Winter Classic tournament over the next month with a prize pool of $10,000 per world region.


Hi-Rez COO Todd Harris says that the game has been booming since its Steam debut earlier this fall: “The worldwide response to Paladins has been incredible. It has been thrilling to see the game grow week-over-week since the Steam open beta began in mid-September, as well as to hear all of the player feedback, which we are constantly using to improve the game.”

Paladins’ 38th open beta update improves Serpent Beach, balances characters

Hi-Rez MOBA Paladins has been patched up this week with a “visual upgrade” for Serpent Beach, a new skin for Ruckus, improvements to projectile attacks, UI tweaks, and better loot highlighting, all out in update 38 for the open beta game.



Fortunately — or unfortunately, depending on which characters you favor — it’s also coming with a balancing patch that buffs and nerfs several toons, including

• Barik, who’s being nerfed for “over performing” and being “too self-sufficient”;
• Grover, who’s being buffed because his damage was too weak;
• and Viktor, who earns his nerf by being too much of a badass at range.

Paladins is simplifying its founder's packs on January 12th

Are you confused by the Paladins Founder's Packs for sale right now? "No," you answer, "they're quite straightforward; you've got the entry-level tier available, then the middle tier, and the most expensive one with the largest amount of gewgaws. It's quite simple." However, in this hypothetical scenario you never get to finish that explanation, because midway through your "no" the person who asked you cuts you off by revealing that the people at Hi-Rez Studios are simplifying the packs down to just one option instead of three confusing options.


At this point, you would likely begin protesting that "three tiers" isn't confusing, but you've also probably sussed out that your participation in this conversation is optional.


The new Founder's Pack will have a $19.99 price tag and is within spitting distance of the current $20 Founder's Pack in terms of contents, so you can also look at this change as being more about removing the higher tiers. The other packs are still available until January 12th, however, with all three types on sale until January 9th (which would be today). So if you want to get more of the goodies available through a higher-tier pack, act now.Read more

Paladins enlists a runic sage for battlefield buffs

Paladins, a mere 42 patches young and still not yet launched, is bringing on board a frontline fighter named Torvald. As a runic sage, Torvald uses the magical power of his giant glove to buff, debuff, and heal right up in the face of the enemy. He's also got a knockback Gatling gun-like ability for when he wants some breathing room.


The patch also introduced a new weekly PvE event called Tank It to the Limit (pause for groans), raised the level cap to 999, a Year of the Rooster gun, and added a mounts tab in the game store.

Paladins brings out the street-smart Maeve

So apparently Paladins' thing is that it's going to be the online multiplayer title that fires patches and new characters at us from some sort of coding gatling gun. It hasn't even been two weeks since Patch 42 and the introduction of Torvold, and now Hi-Rez is springing Patch 43 on us with a whole new champion to play.


The hero of the moment is Maeve, a street-smart rogue who dual-wields throwing daggers, double-jumps around the place, and puts enemies to sleep. Plus, she has pink hair and you know that's half the battle right there.


Patch 43 also contains several limited-time Valentine's Day-themed accessories, skins, and even a "McDreamy" candy pony mount in the store.

Hi-Rez addresses the Paladins pay-to-win uproar

The Paladins community has been flipping tables this week over the game's new Legendary cards and Essence currency, which players argue are blatantly pay-to-win. Hi Rez's latest patch essentially nerfed gold grinding -- and therefore, the players' ability to save gold to simply buy what they want -- by handing out the new Essence instead of gold to players who receive duplicates in their reward chests.



If you're sitting on a huge stock of gold and cards, you're fine, but newbies are finding that gold is almost worthless, RNG can wreck them, and Essence accrues too slowly to be of use. And as MMO players all know, when you can't compete without whipping out your credit card, the words "pay-to-win" aren't far behind.


Good news, though: Hi-Rez said late last night that it's working on the issue and will have some sort of update today, so you're not going to have to make good on those threats to go play Overwatch after all:

Shadow Priest-esque hero Seris is live in Paladins’ open beta

Paladins’ open beta update #48 went live yesterday, and with it arrived the champion teased for the last week and change. Her name is Seris, Oracle of the Abyss; Hi-Rez says she “plays unlike any other champion currently in the game and she really speaks to the fantasy art style” the studio is pursuing. That’s because she’s a bit of a hybrid shadow priest, with shadow damage and heals as well as a stealthy shift-phase and a super annoying (for enemies) crowd control move.

There are also a few new skins for existing characters (Alley Cat Maeve! Bomb King in what appears to be a blinged-out pimp costume!), plus tweaks to the co-op Cops and Robbers map and a bunch of requisite balance adjustments for other toons. Check out Seris’ vid below!
