Phoenix Pictures has commenced production in Vancouver, BC on the feature film Pathfinder, directed by Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and starring Karl Urban, Moon Bloodgood, Clancy Brown, Jay Tavare, Nathaniel Arcand, Ralf Moeller and Russell Means.
Twentieth Century Fox will distribute the film worldwide in 2006.
Pathfinder is a rare combination of myth and adventure, grounded in a provocative moment of untold American history.
Just weeks before the start of principal photography, new evidence surfaced suggesting that Vikings had journeyed at least as far south as New York, a saga that had previously been dismissed as Viking lore. Pathfinder is based on findings of 1000 year-old Norse artifacts discovered in New York.
Pathfinder centers on a boy left behind by the Norsemen fifteen years prior to their return to the New World. The child is raised by American Indians. When Norsemen storm the eastern shores, once again waging a barbaric campaign, they slaughter the tribe that adopted him. Now 25, the man decides to stop the Norsemen's trail of death and destruction. In the process, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery as he comes to terms with his heritage.
The unique tale was inspired by the mythological elements in Nils Gaup's film "Ofelas," (1987) and the renewed interest of this little known historical account of the first invasion on American ground, 492 years before the arrival of Columbus.
Pathfinder depicts what has never been seen on screen -- the clash between American Indians and Norsemen, and the consequences of that encounter.
Pathfinder is being produced by Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Marcus Nispel. The executive producers are Bradley J. Fischer, Lee Nelson and John Jacobson. Vincent Oster, Barbara Kelly and Louis Phillips are the co-producers, with the screenplay written by Laeta Kalogridis (Alexander).
Daniel Pearl (Captivity, the 2003 and 1974 versions of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) is on board as Director of Photography.
