Man jailed over dog hanging death
A man has been jailed for causing the slow, painful death of his mother's dog by hanging it from its lead.
Christopher Collyer, 25, tied Charlie, a brown and white springer spaniel, to a pipe in woods in Keighley, West Yorkshire, in June last year.
Collyer, of Kings Crescent, Morecambe, Lancs, was told by an RSPCA prosecutor he had committed an act of "appalling cruelty". He was jailed for 24 weeks.
The father-of-two was also banned from keeping animals for life.
Shasta Asghar, chairman of the bench at Bradford Magistrates' Court, told him: "The offences are so serious that the only suitable punishment is custody considering the level of cruelty the dog suffered leading up to its death."
It's certainly the worst thing I've encountered in 15 years

But magistrates found him guilty of hanging the dog and described his evidence as "inconsistent, vague, confused and unbelievable".
Nigel Monaghan, prosecuting for the RSPCA, said: "The dog died as a result of a deliberate and what would appear to be a pre-meditated act by the defendant."
"This was horrendous. It's certainly the worst thing I've encountered in 15 years."
Collyer's parents, of West Byland, Halifax, West Yorkshire, previously pleaded guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering to Charlie by not providing treatment for the dog's skin condition.
Mrs Collyer, 47, was sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid work, while Mr Collyer, 56, was ordered to carry out 160 hours. They were both ordered to pay £400 costs.
The couple were also banned from keeping animals for three years and an order was made to confiscate their dog and two kittens.
