Given the angst from fans I've read on these boards as well as those elsewhere, this issue is sure to drive nuts people who wanted Pete and MJ back together. It's interesting...while I abhorred the whole "Mephisto undoes the marriage" thing, I never wanted Pete married in the first place. I remember thinking "the only girl Pete ever really loved was Gwen, how can he possibly marry this shallow, model? (whih is one of the reasons I think USM, despite generally good writing and interesting art is lame--Pete dates hotties and everyone knows he's Spider-Man--USM just never got the character right, imho)." I thought the marriage to MJ was a horrible mistake, the Other was awful, the Goblin twins a miscarriage of justice, and the spider-buggy an abomination. I hope, truly hope, that with this re-boot, Marvel goes back to what made the character iconic. While there have been ups and downs this past year (and I still think it was MJ that made the deal, not Pete, and I refuse to believe otherwise :)) I do think the series is headed in a right direction (finally).

It will be interesting to see how this issue fares. Certainly, President O will help move product, I just hope people will give Pete another chance. :)

With regards to Peter speed dating:

When I saw it, my thought, "Well, I guess that counts as Peter Parker going on a "date" but, geez, Marvel broke up Peter and MJ for that!?" Not to mention it pretty much reinforces the idea how pointless Peter's romantic life and dilemnas he gets into with potential love interests really are under the current editorial mandate.

As for the issue itself, even though I don't like the direction Spider-Man has taken after the fiasco of One More Day, Mark Waid has, so far, been the best writer on this series by far. And just like his two-parter last time, it's essentially a character study and examination of the Spider-Man mythos. And I must say, I like how Betty is portrayed here, in that

rather than fall back into the lazy route of being just another potential love interest again, the relationship between Peter and Betty has evolved that their friendship is akin to them being almost like brother and sister, with each one looking out for the other. And I like the idea that Betty is playing the role of matchmaker even while her own relationships with various friends has become estranged and she didn't even realize it. Of course, that does say a lot about her apparent lack of investigative journalism skills if she can't figure out why Auny May, Harry, and Robbie were mad at her.

Oh, and it looks like, thanks to Betty playing matchmaker, Jameson's dad is going to ask Aunt May out. Hey, Pete? You thought Doc Ock being your potential step-uncle was bad, how about the possibly of having Jolly Jonah as a cousin! :oldrazz:

And of course... Spider-Man vs. "Lex Luthor"!

I suspect the powers that be are easing Pete slowly back into the dating world. They gave the marriage dissolution a year to "cool off" and are now letting him tip toe back into the singles scene. Now we're more likely to see stories evolve that require Pete to be single--or at least I assume we will.

You're on crack, the spider-buggy was and is awesome.

Well, here you go: a story that couldn't have been done with a married Peter. And guess what? It was pretty damn good.

I'm glad people actually have this issue I wasn't as lucky... thank you Marvel for using Obama's face to push product and making it so your regular customers have to wait an extra week.

Well, I'll have to read it to see how it plays out, but it sounds just....so
sit-com-ish. I mean, Speed dating? Isn't that usually done people really needing dates? Does Pete seem like the guy to go out and speed date?

I dunno, Pete's relationships have always been the way most people do it in real life....you meet someone while NOT looking for a date, in a normal, everyday situation.

What's next, singles bars and E-harmony?

Well, since Pete's single he might as well give it another shot with Betty, that would make for some interesting drama.

And actually, the issue does a very nice job of delving into Betty's character. Something we've not seen in ages.

It was a great issue... really gave us good insight to Betty's character that we haven't seen in years...

This was one of the best issues in a while i though.

and its friggen laughable at all this "OMG PETER IS SPEED DATINGS< NOES!!!"

Its not even close to being the main part of the story AT ALL, its just really an opening gag to get a few laughs, nothing more, but that is just common sense, most of that doesn't work on this board too well.

Just read the issue. Loved it!

Now bring on "Character Assassination"!! :D

Ah, I see. Sounds alright.

I DID say I wans't judging it untill I read it though ;)

Hey, he speed dates, saves Barak Obama, and exposes George Bush as a Skrull. I totally did not see the Skrull thing coming, but these last couple of years, I was beginning to wonder....

The only thing that bothered me was Harry looked black in this issue.... >_>

Bryan; you should see about setting up a "pull list" at your nearest comic shop, that way you won't miss any issues.

I think he was in the shadows...

He was partly covered by shadows and hes still darker than usual. I blame the colorist.

Then again its totally not a big deal to begin with lol, I'm just pointing out a small flaw :hyper:

I missed it because everyone flocked to this issue over obama. The owner of my comic shop said they were sold out 20 minutes after they opened. that is the first time i've ever missed anything.

Aloha,
Even though they don't include variants, Marvel has the cheapest subscription rates for Spidey than anyone out there, plus postage is free. Go to Marvel.com subscriptions and check out their prices. You can't go wrong.
Spidey rules

I've always been too afraid to get any comic subscriptions, just because I do not want any of my books showing up damaged at all, and as my luck goes mine would probably all show up rolled up, bent, torn, etc. :(

I had a subscription years ago to Spider-Girl, and was worried about that exact thing, but they came in perfect condition. Only thing was that they accidently skipped an issue, so i called them up and they sent it right out, no questions asked. I got it the next day. For all thier faults, Marvel is really reliable with that stuff.

Personally I think they need to drop any romantic subplots. The issue was never Mary Jane was the right girl for him. But that he was married in the first place. Under this condition had could they give him a new relationship that doesnt undermine the point of omd or bnd?

It does.
Also, aside from a small scene in the new issue, all of these stories could've been made with a married Pete.

Christ, you people are awfully pig-headed...

YES.... any of the stories we've seen in the last year COULD have been told with a married Pete (barring a few scenarios)...

BUT MARVEL COMICS INC., THE OWNER OF THE CHARACTER THAT IS SPIDER-MAN, HAS WANTED A SINGLE SPIDER-MAN, SO IT DOESN'T MATTER WHETHER OR NOT THESE STORIES "COULD" HAVE BEEN TOLD WITH A MARRIED SPIDER-MAN, THE OWNERS OF SPIDER-MAN WANT A SINGLE SPIDEY...

...And the last time I checked, the fans don not "own" Spider-Man.

Sheesh...

:whatever: :whatever: :whatever:
