The Dark Knight Rises Philip Seymour Hoffman would love to play The Penguin

I posted this on antoher thread, but Ill reinsert here for the sake of discussion...mmm...since it was suggested on the last page, I now think that Hoffman would be a brilliant Riddler actually-despite his heft. I mean, Nygma is all brains so he doesnt need to be a lean mean fighter, and theres just something about him that wins me over. Yeah he did well in MI:3 from what Ive seen (which is only trailers and clips-I wasnt fussed enough to watch the flick cos I just dont like the franchise) but even the vision of him in his Truman Capote garb to me recalls the animated series' restrained and cold intellectual Riddler, which is what I would hope to see myself.
I mean imagine a typical Riddler scenario of him setting up a series of traps for someone to work their way out of, and of course they have to solve riddles. I just get the image now of Hoffman standing, the horn rimmed glasses, the dark green suit, hair slicked to the side, and maybe say,a question mark tie clip or hell, lets go nuts, a tattoo on his wrist, calmly taunting them with a underplayed yet smarmy "you can try but you wont succeed, cos Im smarter than you" tone in his voice. the victim is out smarted, we see a look of glee in his eyes and a sly smirk on Hoffmans face (which he does perfectly-weve seen it plenty of times) and he walks away with a smug "well, you need better than that to outsmart Edward Nygma" vibe oozing off him...call me crazy but I see that working.

plus I still just think Depp is uninspired...I mean he could probably do it, but he wouldnt get me interested (would still be first in line to see the flick naturally though)....and I mean the guy is just everybodys default actor these days. its boring. remember (and dont try to deny it) when Heath was cast and people went "whaaa?! that pretty boy?! BOOOOO!" (and I wasnt a fan at first myself)...Hoffman or anyone else you dont immediatly think off really (Sean Maher was my first Riddler choice) could do the same trick of being surprisingly brilliant despite what your intial thoughts are....

Depp is a great actor and is getting crap for being so good right now that people are "bored" of him.

This is from Perez Hilton.com..
We loves it when actors venture off without their PR or studio babysitters!

The Dark Knight's butler, British old timer Michael Caine, spilled some massive Batman news to MTV at the Toronto film fest.

He's basically confirmed the rumors that super thesp Johnny Depp and Academy Award winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman have been cast in the caped crusader's next film installment:

"I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’”

But he also said 'he's read it in the paper'

Hmm.

And Hoffman has denied even been approached and doesn't think he'd be good for the role...

Let alone the fact Nolan hasn't even said he's doing another one!!!

Hey! Philip Seymour Hoffman for The Riddler was my idea... :word:

I wouldn't mind him I guess but I've always wanted Ian McShane for the role of the Penguin.

Hoffman would completely own whatever role he was given. I hope Nolan uses him...

You could have that and make Riddler physically fit who can defend himself in a fight with another actor like Guy Pearce.

I agree.

If they must use him just let him be the Joker not Riddler.

Hoffman or Hoskins would be perfectly A OK with me as far as the Penguin goes.

This would be TO SHHHEEEEEEEET !!!!!

I agree with the Joker thing

You may think Depp is boring but one thing for sure is he probably is the best living method actor. He would garuntee the best mimic performance of Ledger for continuity

hey, I have nothing against Depp, but you have to admit the guy gets suggested for everyhing nowadays...if he were cast I wouldnt kick up a fuss but he still wouldnt get me as intrigued as say Heah did or even cillian murphy where my reaction was "really? Him? well....Ill trust Nolan". Cos, I wasnt expecting them and they ended up paying off big time.I mean Depp's everybody's favourite actor nowadays (even with people who cant be bothered to watch Ed Wood or Dead Man...which I reckon are his most underrated roles) so that makes me think that there was no real effort put into the casting suggestion-he was just the first name that came to mind and people just assumed he could do it. And he probably could. but still....it just seems really uninspired. Id like to see them take a risk, get someone more interesting in for the role. And I cant say that without sounding like Im blasting Depp, which I dont wanna do.

the one thing I will say is that he needs to lay off the whole "I based the character on this guy" thing. I mean they piled it on with the jack sparrow/keith richards idea in pirates, and then he came out with it again during Willy Wonka when he said he based it on Michael Jackson with a tint of marilyn manson...I mean I dont want to know that stuff, it makes it come off like hes just mimicking people in a costume. and Depps better than that so I think he should avoid giving that impression. I dont want him saying "well I based my performance for the Riddler on the guy who won Countdown last year" and then we see he's just impersonating that guy in a green suit.

Plus, I still think Hoffman is a great choice for Nygma. :word:

My ideal Penguin would be nobody. I don't want him for Batman 3. :down

My ideal penguin would be Dany de Vito as as sewer dwelling creature, oh wait a minute...

Didn't Nolan say that he didn't want to do a Penguin?

Yes, he did, or at least it was reported somewhere a long time ago. That would be the reason why we see an Arkham inmate which remind us of the Penguin in Batman Begins. It is allegedly an easter egg.

And this is why I am not considering Cobblepot for the next filme, although I'd love to see Hoffman or Giamatti in it as the Penguin.

What pyschological connection would the Penguin have to Wayne/Batman? Tim Burton couldn't answer this so he cooked up some bizarre freak origin story.
