I don't know what kind of opinions you are looking for, but if you start smoking tobacco through a pipe, you are probably gonna get smelly fingers, yellowy-brown teeth, yellowy-brown skin, a permanent cough, and a big brown tongue. :oldrazz:
But, y'know, you can pretend like you're Sherlock Holmes and stuff, so there is that I guess, but aye, it will bring about all the negatives of cigarette smoking much quicker, because you are not using a filter, and inhaling much more substantial puffs of smoke, oh, and it doesn't matter if you don't technically inhale it into your lungs, it'll still stink you up.

you don't inhale pipe smoke and I already live with 2 cigarette smokers so all my stuff already stinks like smoke

if your not going to help out then keep your opinions to yourself

this has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes it is simply my personal choice and on top of that I won't be smoking a pipe every day

so I will just forget about this thread since I can't get a strait answer

Sorry, I don't know anything about pipe smoking. Not many people still smoke pipes.
And I would abandon this thread, Bum has already hijacked it.

That didn't take long at all, did it?

my uncle and smoked a pipe and that's why I am interested so is my dad

Are you gonna get some kind of really cool and or unique pipe? If so post some pics of pipes you like.

I was just trying to give you some good, healthy advice, you did not specify what kind of opinions you were looking for.
I was trying to save you the trouble of developing unhealthy skin and breathing problems, you might ironically end up wanting to cover your face with a brown paper bag once your skin ends up looking and feeling that way.

these are two I am looking at

I really like the billiard style pipe in general as well . Peterson makes some really nice ones. I really like the rough look of the sandblast

i think sea captain when I think of pipe smoking

This is my girl:

Bought her a very long time ago, havent used her in acouple of years though because I think she's broken. I once lent her to a chick who wanted to try, naturally it rained that night and some water got inside. Never worked quite the same after that :(

I have never smoked cigarettes, dont like the taste or smell... even tho its much more unhealthier than cigarettes, 1) much more tastier with pipe-tobacco, and 2) much more cooler hehe.

I figure pipe smoking I won't be destroying my lungs

I already partake in the occasional cigar and I will be replacing those with a pipe now and then smoking captain black cherry tobbacco

I still may or may not buy the pipe and just stop but that will be my own personal choice and has nothing to do with this thread

While I don't smoke (I'm actually allergic to tobacco smoke, it causes my throat to close up), It was cool to find the ceramic end of a pipe while at work. I worked for an archaeology lab, and we were working at a French and Indian War site.

camp blood....I'm sorry if I sounded like a preachy downer...it's just that as part of my job I have to give people advice like that, and it is just a natrual instinct now to give that safety warning, you do what you want man, freedom of choice, I just wanted you to know of the pitfalls. I ruined my skin through smoking and drinking, and I utterly ruined my singing voice and vocal chords, giving me a permanent breathing problem through smoking.

Also, if you are gonna get a custom made pipe from someone, make sure you send them size specifications, so they don't mail you one the size of a tuba, remember the lessons of your mail order lebowski cardigan. :cwink:

Pipe smoking is bad, but I like Tobacco, so it's meh. But um...if this is what you want, just be careful about it. My dad has a old pipe, but he doesn't use it anymore. If you have any Tobacco shops in your area, check them out.

Nice!

it's not going to be custom just a regular pipe

and I won't smoke the pipe a lot the most 2 - 3 times a week

I am half doing this to help me quit smoking weed

For me, its a once in a while thing. I have two pipes. I smoke what's called Good Companion. Its a mixture of Cavendish. I love the smell of pipe smoke, and pipe tobacco comes in so many varieties. Is it healthy? No, but neither is 90% of the rest of the stuff you come on contact with throughout your life.

Try and smoke it outside if you don't want to have your place smelling of pipe tobacco smoke (although there are some aromatic blends that do smell good). Also, I would recommend getting pipe cleaners, a tamper and a pipe lighter. The pipe lighter shoots the flame out the side and makes it easier to light your pipe. Use the tamper to pack down the tobacco in your pipe and avoid packing the hot tobacco with your thumb. When packing your new pipe, small pinches are best. Add the first pinch, to avoid an air pocket in bottom of bowl. Your second pinch should fill your pipe bowl half full. Each time you add a pinch, tamp the tobacco firmly but leave a slight spring. When you light up note that the tobacco will rise gently. Use your tamper on the lit tobacco and tamp it gently while at the same time the same time puffing gently. That way your tobacco will burn towards the bottom of the bowl instead of toward the top. Remember to take slow gentle steady puffs. Drawing in too hard will make the tobacco burn hotter and also burn the inside of your mouth (although that could also be an indication that you packed your tobacco too loose). As the tobacco burns you can tap the burned out ashes into an ash tray. You can also use the tamper to dig out any clinging ashes.

Yeah, you should have more than one pipe. Use it for a while then give it a rest and use a different pipe. I am not a big smoker either. I did it when I was in college and I still pick up one every once in a while. Cavendish is good but some of them burn hot. I also like the blends that have the smell of chocolate.

I am going for aeromatic

like I said I will start off with captain black cherry

could you name a few brands

Captain Black is a good smelling brand and is pretty cheap (compared to the tobacco store blends), but I found them to burn pretty hot (especially the cherry). These are the ones that I liked the most:

In my opinion, it is better to go to a tobacco store (like The Tinderbox) and buy some of their blended tobaccos. You can try it out for free in the store and you can order it by the ounce. You will find that they taste and smell better.

If the smoker would like to avoid hot smoke I would suggest a Churchwarden Pipe. They are the long pipes like Gandalf used in Lord of the Rings. The long stem allows the smoke to cool before reaching your mouth. They come in many styles and different angles.

Churchwarden Pipe is on top. They can be up to 16" long.

If you really get into smoking them you could also consider getting a meerchaum pipe. The don't take on the flavor of the tobacco like the wood pipes do and they last a long time. The could be quite expensive though, but there is a website that sells them for under $30.

sorry but I can't go with that even though I would absolutly love to

dnno what would you say is a step up from captain black I'm not afraid to spend 10-15 bucks for a mid range tobacco

I have tried Half and Half, Borkum Riff, and even Prince Albert (in a can), but I've liked none of the popular brands better than Captain Black (white or gold). That being said, the best is still the stuff in the tobacco shops. Like I said before, you don't have to buy $25 worth of tobacco. You can walk in and sample some and then ask for $5 worth of it. They will weigh it and put it in a plastic bag for you.
