First off Fox got the X-Men rights off Marvel on the cheap back when Marvel was struggling to get out of bankruptcy. If Fox just stopped making X-Men films they'd lose those rights. X-Men is by far Fox's most profitable franchise...EVER. Forget Star Wars because Fox only got a flat fee for those films since Lucas controlled everything including all profit. For Fox to see X3 make between 110-120+ million domestically on opening weekend (plus whatever international #'s are) and not make X4 would result in shareholders suing them. Spin-off's are fine but there are plenty of X-Men stories to tell that take place after or before the events in this story arc.
So place your bets. We all now Wolverine is coming but Fox is going to greenlight X4. What they're going to say is "The fans have spoken and there is clear demand for more of these films so we are going to make more."
It's so obvious it's funny.
We'll hear something by next weekend as we breach 200 million.
