Playing with helium can kill you...

Inhaling anything except for clean fresh air can be damaging. This does not seem like it's newsworthy.

:lmao:

But seriously, that's pretty darned tragic. What a pointless death for something that would appear to be harmless. His family must be miserable.

I assumed it was common knowledge, but according to the kid's father, he didn't know it. I remember it being one of the first things my dad told me when he showed me the whole funny voice thing.

Probably, knowing my dad. I was really young and don't remember it exactly.

Sounds like a suicide. He was getting straight A's in school, surely he was smart enough to know he couldn't survive on just Helium if he put a bag over his head and sealed it.

Grades and education aren't a good way of telling how intelligent someone it. He still should've known better.

A lot of people don't know that it can be harmful... for some reason.

After the family went to bed that night, the boy attached a bag to the tank to place over his head and closed it off to keep the helium from getting out, said Riverside police Sgt. Mark Rossi.

Sounds more like a person trying to commit suicide than trying to make a funny voice.

I think the gas that makes your voice lower is much cooler anyway -

I thought every one knew that helium can kill
You would think so, that's why I think it was a suicide. The Suicide Bag is a pretty common method of suicide, and is usually used with an inert gas like Helium that knocks the person unconscious before the pain of Asphyxiation begins, making it a relatively peaceful death. It's possible he was just trying to get high but why would he do it with nobody around in case he passed out with the bag on his head? If wasn't trying to die he surely would never have sealed a bag around his head knowing there would be nobody to help him until the next morning. It seems more likely to me that he was trying to kill himself, and succeeded.

What's that heavier-than-air gas that makes your voice sound really deep? It's a lot harder to get your hands on since there aren't many commercial applications for it, but I always wanted to try it since it's hilarious, and I've been told that my voice is already capable of rattling through walls.

This Just In: Sealing a bag around your head and inhaling gases will kill you.

I think it sounds like a suicide, too. No one getting straight A's could be that stupid. What? This was in Riverside? As in California? Oh, never mind, then. He might very well have been dumb enough to not know it'd kill him.
