Record-breaking 165,000 PS3s sold at UK launch

New format becomes fastest-selling home console ever over its debut weekend.
The figure is three quarters of the total 220,000 UK launch stock for day one, and makes PS3 second only to PSP in the overall launch weekend sales stakes. The Sony handheld shifted 185,000 during its opening weekend back in September 2005.

PS3’s record-breaking debut for a home console comfortably beats the previous top seller Nintendo Wii, which sold 105,000 after its frantic launch weekend in December last year. Fellow format rival Xbox 360 racked up an estimated 70,000 at launch in December 2005.

The figure also means that Sony has not sold all of its opening weekend stock, something the platform holder claims is part of its overall strategy at retail.

good for Sony! Hope they continue to do well overseas

The amout of people that called the UK launc disaster...

"Page Not Found."

Is the message I found when I clicked on the link. In any case, I'll wait for further reports for confirmation; the horror stories of European apathy towards PS3 certainly contradicts this outcome. But who knows...

EDIT: Does fastest-selling=best-selling? I don't think so. And this was just a few days ago:

Actually it is the best selling week 1 launch console in UK history. Having cherry picked screenshots of places where it did badly is just as disingenious as cherry picking photos from places where it did well.

UKResistance hates Sony, they're a parody site of themselves in a way, since they openly admit to being die hard Sega fans who refuse to let go. :o

Motorstorm looks awesome, I don't care what Wii fans tell you. Graphics matter.

Just because someone owns a Wii doesn't mean they won't appreciate great graphics, Kritish...

UKResistance is saying that the Playstation 3 selling well is Nazi Propaganda :o

They'll still call the launch a failure, even though it sold better than other consoles.

If there ever is a war with China and Russia against the UK, I am going to sign up for the other side straight away. UK, aside from me and a few others, are ****ing ******ed chavs and morons.

Am I a moron still Jams?

*HUGSIES*

I take it you're all aware far more ps3s were AVAILABLE in the Uk than, say, the wii? (Hence the Wii selling out and the ps3 readily available.)

Oh, and that minor detail of both shipping a million to Europe where the wii sold out across the continent and the PS3 flopped pretty much everywhere but the UK? Which in turn got only a little over a fifth of the consoles?

If you sell well in a fifth of a market and don't in the rest, that doesn't make it an overall success. :whatever:

It may have sold more but there was more time for them to get prepared in the case of nintendo and microsoft there was not and compared to the psp which is a handheld sony still is showing some pitiful numbers. and thats only a third of their entire UK stock they've got a long way to go before they beat the 360 and the wii(^_^)

PS3's a Record Breaker
165,000 consoles sold in just three days.
by Rob Burman, IGN UK
UK, March 27, 2007 - As expected, PlayStation 3 has become the fastest selling home console in British history, with 165,000 consoles flying off the shelves since it was launched last Friday.

Thanks to plenty of early stock - compared to the Wii and Xbox 360 - most people could walk into a store over the weekend and buy a console without any hassle. In fact, many retailers still have units available and the 165,000 consoles sold only account for a third of the overall UK stock.

PS3 comfortably beat the Wii and Xbox 360 launches, which managed to sell 105,000 and 70,000 respectively. However, while PS3 may be the best-selling home console, it still failed to eclipse Sony's PSP, which racked up a staggering 185,000 sales during launch weekend.

Over 2/3rds, actually.
