Oh man, this is a tough year for me! i'll have to think about this one long and hard...

I ultimately went with Children of Men, although I strongly considered Pan's Labyrinth, The Departed, United 93, and The Lives of Others, in about that order.

I've liked all of Christopher Nolan's movies, but The Prestige leaves me a bit cold. It's well crafted, but I care nothing for the protagonists, the structure of the film like a magic trick is interesting but a magic trick has no meaning beyond the illusion and I think that hurts the movie, and ultimately I don't care about the intellectual stakes of what's better, the dedication to craft or the dedication to pleasing the audience.

This is the first one of these polls where I don't feel like I know what's going to win. I think the only other one will be 2007 (2009 might be interesting too).

Anyway, I voted for The Departed. Children of Men is very close, and I love Little Miss Sunshine and The Queen too.

Also, A Prairie Home Companion and Clerks II are way better than some of the movies that did get listed on the poll. But I didn't really expect either to be listed, and the list is a good representation of what was acclaimed and popular in 2006.

Pan's Labyrinth

I almost went with The Departed and Casino Royale, though.

The Pursuit of Happyness.
Third best movie I've ever seen.

I vote Children of Men.

Apocalypto. I actually consider Pan's Labyrinth 2007 since that's when it expanded, even if I put in 2006 Apocalypto was still better though.

The Descent and SAW III (which despite all the smug eye-rolling and face-palming reactions it typically gets is full of interesting themes, emotion, and character arcs) were better than everything else that year.

The Departed was a rather bland, generic crime drama, and The Prestige was pretty bad. Couldn't have cared less about the characters and the execution of the story was self defeating toward its intended message.

No-brainer for me. I vote for "The Departed". But just something I noticed...why is "300" on the list? That came out in 2007.

There are 4 movies that deserve to win this. I love The Departed, Pan's Labirynth, Children of Men, and Letters From Iwo Jima pretty much equally. So, I had to vote for the film I have ended up rewatching the most, and that is The Departed. It is a phenominal film, with clever twists, and it has very high rewatchability. The other 3 do too, but I find myself going back to that one most.

The Departed by a slim margin.

I love The Departed too much not to vote for it. Children of Men and The Prestige ain't bad either.

I must have missed Prairie Home Companion, because I probably would have included Altman's last film otherwise. (Reminder, you're all invited to chime in in the companion topic where I try to come up with poll choices so I don't miss anything.) That said, I don't know anyone who would make a strong case for it as best of the year, just a graceful last movie.

Clerks II I would have needed more convincing on.

Re: 300

I screwed up on that one too. Mea culpa. Also bad on IMDB. Ultimately I don't think it will make a big difference in the polls and I'll leave it out of 2007.

Also, yeah I'm curious how 2006, 2007, and 2009 will shake out without a clear comic book / fantasy film front runner.

I hate The Departed. I was very disappointed with it. Nowhere near Scorcese at his best.

I think Pan's Labrynith, Children of Men, The Last kind of scotland, the presitge, united 93, and notes on a scandal were all good films...but I voted for Pan's Labrynith. I love that movie. Last king of scotland is a close second though

Wow! The Departed, Children of Men and The Prestige! What a great year. I vote for the latter. What a great flick.

I'm still agonizing over this :hehe:

I'm torn between Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, The Departed, The Prestige and the Last King of Scotland

Ok, my vote goes to Pan's Labyrinth, followed closely by the other ones i mentioned though.

Honorable mentions: Apocalypto, Little Miss Sunshine, Volver and Letters from Iwo Jima.

I actually forgot about the companion topic until now. Whoops. But yeah, I doubt anyone would have voted for A Prairie Home Companion anyway. I doubt anyone would pick Clerks II either; I thought it was underrated and better than some of the other movies listed, but it wouldn't be my "best of the year" vote.

It was a tossup of Children of Men and Casino Royale. Went with Casino Royale.
