So was Pope John Paul II, but he willed himself to keep on trucking.

no i got that from being a smart ass and making a joke.

and as other as said this is out of the blue and the previous pope was in much worse health and far older but him stepping down was never an option.

I hear Bono is waiting for the call to be the new pope ;)

Seriously though church should elect a younger and more healthy guy next time around.

Well, we have yet to see who the next pope will be. So far, Palpatine jokes would be more or less applicable to most of them throughout history, so if its another old white guy we can recycle the same humor.

Yeah and he can break into song just out of nowhere when being interviewed by Barbara Walters in his spiffy new Pope Robes.

I hear that Nicki Minaj has been getting some practice when it comes to Catholicism.

Probably nothing. He'll get the usual high powered get out of jail free/ no personal responsibility card.

It does seem a little iffy since most Popes have to be at death's door or literally dying before they leave that position.

Are Roman Catholics ready for a Black Pope?

Not being a Catholic myself, I have no idea.

Actually, I think the lawsuit has been withdrawn anyway, since it was intended to uncover documents concealing sexual molestation and they've been able to get to them via the archdiocese bankruptcy hearings ....but he was specifically named as a defendant.

I think they should have a term for making a getaway like that....something Italian....like....'Paterno'. I like that...."in stepping down, Pope Benedict XVII claims the sacred right of Paterno..." It's like Omerta, but with sex thrown in. :D

That's a good question. I was raised staunch Catholic, but terminated with extreme prejudice my relationship to that institution a long time ago.

On one hand, an African, Asian or South American pope would reflect the only parts of the world where that institution isn't in decline. However, from my own experience I know a lot of traditional Catholics from the European tradition are uncomfortable sharing their space with other cultures, and a black pope would just be unsettling for some.

Ah. I must have left my sense of humor hanging by a belt in my closet this morning. It's monday...

It's definitely out of the blue, though can we really say if the previous Pope was in worse health? Age isn't necesarilly a factor, as old age doesnt automatically equal poor health. Hell, my friend's grandfather lived to be 98, and was remarkably healthy for his age (still pretty spry, full mental capacities). People age differently, but to be honest, I don't know much about this Pope.
