The Outer Worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.

In The Outer Worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to Halcyon, the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. The Outer Worlds, the December 2018-announced science-fiction open-world RPG from publisher Private Division and developer Obsidian Entertainment, is Game Informer’s March 2019 cover story, the magazine announced.

Here is Game Informer’s overview of its magazine coverage:

Inside, you’ll find 14 pages chock full of new details, screenshots, and art from The Outer Worlds. We learned about the distant Halcyon star system that serves as the setting. A new demo showed off new playstyles for confronting encounters, including a surprising approach that focuses on leadership and companions. We learned about leveling, character progression, and skill acquisition – and saw the hilarious shrink ray weapon in action. We also spoke extensively with the developers at Obsidian about the scope and size of The Outer Worlds, the comparisons to Fallout, and more.

The March issue also afforded us the chance to learn more about Ubisoft’s upcoming release of The Division 2, with a thorough examination of how the game has grown from its predecessor, and is embracing a deep end-game experience. We visited the headquarters of the VR specialists at Oculus, and we’re happy to share a first look at a new fantasy adventure called Asgard’s Wrath, which aims to raise expectations for large-scale VR gaming. If you’re already planning your watch list for the next year, expect a multi-page feature on the most anticipated games of 2019 as well.

In addition to the magazine coverage, Game Informer will have a month of exclusive online content.

The Outer Worlds is due out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019.

The Outer Worlds was announced about two months ago, during The Game Awards 2018, as Obsidian Entertainment's next major, and probably last multiplatform, project and a spiritual successor to their own Fallout: New Vegas. The game is being created by the developers responsible for the original Fallout and two of those skilled artist recently sat down with Game Informer to answer 131 questions.

In this extended interview, Game Informer’s Joe Juba asks Co-Directors Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky about The Outer Worlds' gameplay, companions, scope, and the current state of Obsidian Entertainment, as the beloved video game maker has been recently purchased by Microsoft and joined the newly formed Xbox Game Studios alongside inXile Entertainment, Minecraft, Ninja Theory, Playground Games, Rare, Turn 10 Studios, Undead Labs and Microsoft's Global Publishing group.

The Outer Worlds will be released by Private Division, a label of Take-Two Interactive (parent company of 2K and Rockstar) designed to make not indie, but also not big-budget titles, so don't expect Obsidian’s new game to be as vast and rich as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or the aforementioned Fallout New Vegas. The good news is that The Outer Worlds is 100% coming out this year. Check out the interview down below:

Obsidian Entertainment's The Outer Worlds was announced during The Game Awards 2018 as a spiritual successor to the studio's own Fallout: New Vegas. In TOW, the player's avatar awake from hibernation on a ship that was lost in transit to the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy with only one mission: solving a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon base.

According to an update on the game's Steam page, someone had added (and instantly deleted) a release date for The Outer Worlds – August 6, 2019. Given that August 6 falls on a Tuesday this year, there's a chance that the listing is accurate, as Tuesday is a traditional release date for video games.

The Outer Worlds has been in active development since April 2016, around when Leonard (Boyarsky [the Senior World Designer on Diablo III and the Art Director on the very first Fallout]) joined the team.

Published by Private Division, a label of Take-Two Interactive (parent company of 2K and Rockstar), The Outer Worlds might be the last major multiplatform project created by Obsidian, as Microsoft has recently announced that the Alpha Protocol studio has joined the newly formed Xbox Game Studios.

Considering that Obsidian Entertainment has lately been focusing on more niche projects (like Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny), the fact that the makers of one of the best Fallout games of all time (and no, it's not 76) are finally retuning to big-budget development makes The Outer Worlds even more intriguing. While we're still not sure when that RPG releases, we've got a brand-new reason to talk about the title.

Obsidian showcased their new extravaganza during this year's PAX East in Boston, giving the audience a chance to take a closer look at over 20 minutes of uncut gameplay footage from The Outer Worlds. Those who didn't attend the event can also check out the video, by courtesy of YouTuber MrRedRivers.

In TOW, you take on the role of a daredevil who finds themselves in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy Halcyon, the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy.

Although the footage doesn't focus on exploration or traversing the planet, it does put the spotlight onTOW's shooting mechanics and dialogue wheel. Be sure to learn more The Outer Worlds down below:

The Outer Worlds coming to Switch
Due out after the launch of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions.

Outer-Worlds-Switch_07-30-19.jpg

The Outer Worlds is coming to Switch sometime after the launch of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions on October 25, publisher Private Division and developer Obsidiain Entertainment announced. The Switch version will be ported by Virtuos.

Here is an overview of the game, via Private Division:

About

The Outer Worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.

Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

Key Features

  • The player-driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
  • You can be flawed, in a good way: New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren’t particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
  • Lead your companions: During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It’s up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
  • Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything… except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

Obsidian Entertainment has released a new trailer for The Outer Worlds, offering players a look at all of the "off world opportunities" that await them at the Halcyon colony. The trailer is actually edited to look like some marketing material for the colony with the visuals cleary tongue-in-cheek with what's being shown.

As for the video, it provides a look at some of the exciting and unique locations across the Halcyon colony. Terra 2 — an employment community — promises a "productive life" and access to "every modern amenity." The "gently terraformed and pristine" Monarch is an alien world rife with danger and perfect for adventurers. From the promises of a job to professional advancement, the trailer highlights the games various features and mechanics with humor similar to that of Fallout (which makes sense considering Obsidian's entertainment with the franchise).

Check out the trailer below and get ready for an out of this world adventure.

Do you dream of working on the frontier of space? Can you pass a basic aptitude test? Then Halcyon is the place for you! Prosperity and adventure awaits on Terra 2, Monarch, and other exciting locations across the Halcyon colony. The character you decide to become will determine how your story on the Halcyon colony unfolds in The Outer Worlds.

The Outer Worlds launches on October 25 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

THE OUTER WORLDS: Narrative Designer On The Possibility Of Sequels To The Upcoming Role-Playing Game
Megan Starks, the narrative designer behind The Outer Worlds, recently teased that Obsidian Entertainment would absolutely be interested in sequels to the upcoming game if it proves to be a hit.Read more

Obsidian Entertainment's next game is only a month and two weeks away from release. The Outer Worlds will be a first-person shooter and role-playing game much like Fallout. That makes sense given that a lot of the crew at Obsidian are responsible for creating the Fallout franchise.

Another thing that The Outer Worlds might one day have in common with the Fallout franchise is it consisting of many installments. Recently, the upcoming game's narrative designer, Megan Starks participated in an interview with VGC in which she was asked about the possibility of the game evolving into a franchise.

Starks explained that Obsidian is currently focused on getting The Outer Worlds out to players. However, if the game proves to be a hit then they'd absolutely interested in sequels.

"I guess it depends on if people like the game, but we would absolutely be interested in plans like it, yeah. I really enjoyed making this game so I would like to work on it a while longer. But I think first our focus is polishing up this game and getting it out the door!"

The developer then teased that they've already got countless ideas for expanding the fictional universe. "The nice thing is, since the game is from the co-creators of the original Fallout IP, they just have notes and notes… we already have a full universe of lore, which is really nice."

The Outer Worlds will be releasing for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 25th, 2019 — and for the Nintendo Switch at a later date.
