I have come to the decision that I am taking out a private student loan. I'm not going to let my mother take out a $20,000 for myself. I know all the consequences of this decision.

So does anyone have good suggestion of places to take one out at?

I'm currently checking out Chase student loans. All intrest rates are under 7% and I can borrow up to $40,000 a year.

Any other money tips for a college student?

I know Sallie Mae is the default one to use, but if you choose to, be wary...they have a rep for screwing people over on the interest big time. Check out FASFA also.

*shudders*

Banks here don't let you take out money unless you've either been working for 3 years (nearly impossible for a recently-graduated highschool student) or have to co-signed by a parent. Ugh. I'm trying to figure out how to come up with money for college as well...

I hear Sallie Mae screws people over all the time. FASFA wasn't too much help.

Try CitiBank's CitiAssist loan. You get approved in 30 seconds online, as long as you or your co-signer have decent credit. And I believe you can borrow up to the full amount of your tuition.

(However, if they have to run an extended credit check, it could take 48 hours, but still, I haven't had a problem with these guys)

Before you do anything apply for FASFA, low interest rates and if you apply early enough there is a LOT of grant/free money.

Fasfa offers 40 grand, I think for undergraduates and 120 grand for grad students.

How did if not help Saph? Do your parents make over 100K?

If FASFA doesn't help, click this link. It'll help you compare loan rates. There are other sites that help you do the same thing.

Sallie Mae, Citicorp and Chase are all pretty good. Just make sure you get one that doesn't have an application fee; is subsidized, allows for repayment, at least, 6 months after graduation, allows deferments/forbearance. Try to get a LOW fixed interest rate below 5%. Most of my loans are at around 5%, except this ridiculous Citiloan that has 8% on it...interest is a killer! :(

lol no, my mother makes about 38k , but the school I am going has not yet send me information if I am recieving any insititutional scholarships, and I should be recieving those sometime this upcoming week.

Fasfa said that I didn't qualifiy for a fedral pell grant even though my efc is 5300.

Yeah, definitely steer clear of sallie mae. They're still bugging me, even though I finished paying them off a couple of years ago.

If your mom only makes 38K how is your EFC 5300? There is no way that's right.

Yes transfer to state college and forget about taking out more loans.

My EFC was 562 and so I qualified for a Federal Pell Grant, but the
college I wanted to go to still wanted me to take out a student loan.

One of the college representatives told me to check out these websites to apply for a two scholarships a week,collegeboard.com and fastweb.com

Now I plan on going to a community college in my state.I should only have to pay for books...

Stupid FAFSA seems to think that my family only needs like $400 of a $26,000 tuition fee in financial aid. Yeah, right!
