Well I think my PS3 brokedown. I was playing MLB The Show and suddenly the thing just shut down. Now when I try to turn it back on the green light flashes then it goes to red. Anyone have this problem before? Is there anyway to fix it?

Yep. :csad:

I think you need to replace the blue ray lens. I just sent it to Sony to get it fix. I got it back in less than 2 weeks. No warranty on it so it cost me $191 to fix, including shipping and handling. Some people take the route of buying the replacement part ($50-80 bucks) and fixing it themselves. I thought about it but settle with Sony. Didn't want to **** up my system any further and sure as hell didn't want spending $50-80 bucks on some cheap knock off replacement part.

when the drive goes you can normally still play demos off the hard disk etc. funnily enough when i took my ps3 apart to replace the laser assembly, when putting it back together i mustn't have connected a ribbon cable properly because it failed to turn on. it would flash lights beep a bit then turn off almost instantly. that was easy enough to fix. but many problems could lead to the same failure to boot, so it's hard to diagnose.

This happened to me...after trying to turn it back on twice i got the yellow light of death. Back-up all your saves ASAP because your PS3 is probably about to be toast :(

I have the YLOD is there any way to get my trophies and everything back when I get a new ps3?

A new one? Yes and no.

Syncing your trophy list will permanently bind them to your name. On the other hand, to prevent cheating, trophies require you to be playing a from scratch game you made on that PS3. So that way someone can't just download a save game from someone off the net before the end, load it and get free tropies. Which means that even if you back up your save data, you'll have to start a fresh game to continue to get trophies on that game.

As for anything else, I think. I've heard about an external device you can get that will allow you to read the harddrive, and then you can grab the data and transfer it over to your new PS3. Also if you're getting it repaired by Sony, they probably won't touch your info on your harddrive as the YLOD problem is unrelated to it. There's also always the option of just popping your old harddrive into your new system if you still have your old PS3 setting around. Personally, I occasionally back up my game saves to my PSP. In fact I did so when I gave my bro my old PS3 and bought a new one.

I guess it just boils down to your situation (if you still have the old harddrive and it works), or if you're willing to spend money for that device I mentioned.

Edit - I was looking it up, and THINK this is it. Tho if you were serious about buying it I'd do much more research as this is only a guess on my part. I don't see why it wouldn't work as it's for the same type of harddrive a PS3 uses, but I could be wrong.

Here's a description -

"If you've got a SATA 2.5" or 3.5" Hard Disk Drive and you want to retrieve the data from, back up data to it or simply test the hard drive whilst out of the PC then this is the cable kit for you. Includes all the cables and the Power Supply unit for SATA hard drives. "

Basically it'll let you power the harddrive while outside of your comp or PS3. Then you can connect it to something else and just pull the data off of it.

to correct what FadingCB said above (since i've actually gone throught this myself):

Your trophies and account info are safe, they are kept on a Sony maintained server and not actually saved on your machine, so no worries there.

The PS3 hard drive is a regular 2.5" laptop hard drive. I don't know if the PS3 slim uses the same kind of hard drive though i bet it does. i'm sure a quick google search will answer that for you.

As for sending your PS3 to Sony for repair (trust me, i asked them about just letting me keep the hard drive) THEY DO NOT AND WILL NOT GIVE YOU BACK YOUR OLD HARD DRIVE! and you MUST included it when you send it in otherwise they won't repair it. It has to be the whole console. So your saves are pretty much toast unless you find a way to back-up that PS3 hard drive. I was unsuccessful in my attempts to grab my files off the hard drive using my PC, since the PS3 OS and file system isn't readable through Windows. so that little USB thing FadingCB mentioned above probably won't do anything for you.

My suggestion: If you have a friend with a PS3, plug your hard drive into their PS3 and, using a FAT32 formatted external hard drive, back-up your hardrive. Then send your console into Sony and when you get the new one back, push your data from the external hard drive to your new one.

In the future, i recommend you either get an SD card for your ps3 and back-up regularly...or just get a new and bigger HD for your PS3. I got a 320 HD for only $64 and it's great.

Sorry to hear your going through this, it totally sucks. This happened to my launch 60 GB PS3.

i think if you just plug a ps3 formatted harddisk into a new ps3, it'll ask you to format it before you can do anything with it, so you lose your data in that case. this is part of why they allow transfer console to console and backing up. you also can't restore a back up to a different ps3. i think it's because of system security (piracy prevention) that the harddisk is tied to a unique encrypted number for each ps3.

I guess I need to backup my system mext week.

You can recover your trophies from the YLOD, but unless you backed up your data there is no way to recover it on the new system. I tried EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING to transfer my data when my PS3 YLOD'd, including some wacky arcane techno voodoo that no-one else had even thought of. You'll still have your online profiles since they are not stored on the HDD but rather a server, and your trophies will still be there too (assuming you synced recently), but for everything else it's SOL.

On the bright side, this is a chance for you to revisit some of your older games and play them again. That's how I saw it, at least. Make lemonade out of your lemons.

Oh crap, I think I just got with one and this was BEFORE I got a chance to make a backup

I haven't backed up in 6 months and you guys just scared me into doing it again. Which is a good thing. I really think I need to sell my 60gb and get a Slim. I get a little more nervous about it everytime I turn it on. Is today the day keeps going through my mind. I have also had issues getting Uncharted 2 to play. It works now, but sometimes it hangs on the load screen.

I had mine for almost 3 years and never thought of it happening to me. I went to download the Heavy Rain patch and it stopped woking and I got the yellow light. The last time I remember backing up my drive was last summer but cant recall if Ive done it since. The only game that Im worried about losing saves for from last fall and this year is FF XIII. I was on Chapter 9 and a little over 20 hours into it. I guess thats not so bad and Im glad I didnt put over 80 hours into it yet. I will never attempt to finish the platinum for MW2 if I have to start those spec op challenges all over. What sucks is that Ive barely touched my PS3 in the past few weeks bc of school. Its practically over and though Id be able to enjoy my system and this happens.

FYI, I went and dropped it off at a repair shop in my area and hopefully will get it back today. The guy is charging $75. I went and did this bc I heard that if you said it to Sony you lose your data and I didnt want to risk that. As soon as I get my system back, assuming it works, the first thing I will do is back up important saves onto a USB stick and then attempt a full system backup

FYI.

Hi everyone! Many of you can attest to the fact that the PlayStation brand has long been synonymous with the highest quality in engineering and design. For those of you looking for a little extra peace of mind, we’re now offering an extended service plan for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PSP (PlayStation Portable) systems that is backed by SCEA and leverages our technical expertise. Under the new program, PS3 and PSP owners in the United States can purchase an extended service plan of one or two years that begins after the original one-year manufacturer’s limited warranty expires.
With the PlayStation Protection Plan, you can extend the same coverage from the original manufacturer’s one-year warranty for one or two additional years. The pricing includes all shipping charges and repairs, which are performed by PlayStation-trained service technicians at SCEA-authorized repair facilities. The PlayStation Protection Plan is available beginning in May 2010. PSP owners can also choose the Accidental Damage Plan, which provides coverage for cracked-screen damage in the event of an unexpected drop. See pricing below:
 • PS3 – 1-year extension ($44.99) or 2-year extension ($59.99)
 • PSP – 1-year extension ($29.99) or 2-year extension ($39.99)
 • PSP Accidental Damage – 1-year ($39.99) or 2-year ($49.99)
So, why are we offering this now, you ask? Well, we’ve heard your requests for an extended service plan that’s backed directly by SCEA. From the get go, we’ve been extremely committed to offering the best entertainment experiences possible. While both the PS3 and PSP systems are designed with future-proof technology and built for long lifecycles, we’re excited to be offering this service to those of you looking for a little something extra.
PS3 and PSP owners take note – the PlayStation Protection Plan is available to PS3 or PSP owners (both the PSP-3000 and PSPgo systems) who are still within their one-year limited manufacturer’s warranty. The PSP Accidental Damage Plan must be purchased within the first 30 days of owning a PSP system, and the plan is effective beginning on the purchase date. You can purchase the PlayStation Protection Plan by calling 1-866-716-7669. Additional details and are available at http://us.playstation.com/support/protection-plan/index.htm. ^^^^ So this comes out right after my PS3 craps out on me? Sucks this wasnt avaialble from the beginning bc I would have still been within that extended warranty period. BTW, that local shop couldnt fix my PS3. Im shipping it out to a website (psr1.com) I saw recommended. If that doesnt fix my system, looks like I will be shopping for a slim. Im really worried that Sony will roll a new on out in a few months. Well we do know a Move bundled one will be released in fall. Dont know if there will be any adjustments to the system, price drop, etc... Cant wait that long.

Also I checked my external harddrive and the last time I backed up my system was in August. :(
