Tags: Japan, Sony Style Store There has been a lot of talk recently about the pricing of the upcoming Playstation 3 and its software including the news coming out of the Tokyo Game Show 2006 (TGS) that the PlayStation 3 games' prices will be higher in other territories. It was speculated at TGS by Munechika Nishida (a well-known contributor to Japanese newspapers and tech magazines) that prices for the upcoming titles (for those only living in Japan) will range between $ 75 US and $ 84 US. The reason given for such a price? The rising costs of development.
Fear not though, as a quick look-over at Sony Style US reveals they have seven games available for pre-order on the PlayStation 3 and they are all set to $ 59.99 US. This includes the titles Blazing Angels, Call of Duty 3, Full Auto 2, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tony Hawk's Project 8 and Untold Legends.
The cost of owning a PlayStation 3 may have just gotten higher: according to company CEO Robert Kotick, Activision games for the next-gen console will carry a retail price tag of about $60.
You'll probably need to pay a bit more for PS3 games like Metal Gear Solid 4
"We have not seen a lot of consumer resistance at the higher price points and we expect that all of our next-generation products will be launched at $60 price points," Kotick said.
Many developers have pointed to the rising cost of game development as the main reason for an increase in the retail price of next-gen titles. Many games for the Xbox 360, including Activision's Call of Duty 2, were released at the $59.99 price point and it isn't hard to imagine other companies following suit when the PlayStation 3 is released later this year.

Gamers have known about the price of the PlayStation 3 since E3 (except in Japan, where the price was recently cut), but the costs of the system's games have been up in the air. The cat may be out of the bag now, as the online Sony Style store now has listings for seven games, all priced at $59.99.
Shoppers can now preorder Ubisoft's Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII, Activision's Tony Hawk Project 8, Call of Duty 3, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog and Full Auto 2: Battlelines, as well as Sony Online Entertainment's Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom.
The pricing of Untold Legends may reveal what future PS3 owners feared--that first-party games would retail for the same price as third-party games. Microsoft currently prices new release first-party games for its Xbox 360 at $49.99, $10 cheaper than the $59.99 tag on third-party games. First-party Wii games have also been confirmed to sell at $49.99.
The price falls in line with what Activision CEO Robert Kotick said at a Merrill Lynch Media and Entertainment Conference earlier this month. "We have not seen a lot of consumer resistance at the higher price points, and we expect that all of our next-generation products will be launched at $60 price points," Kotick said.
