The über version of the PlayStation 3 evidently isn't shipping with the HDMI cable needed to take advantage of 1080p Blu-ray sweetness that has been promised by Sony ever since the PS3's high-def qualities have been hyped up. According to a recently updated FAQ on the official PS3 site, it says the following: "Copy-protected Blu-ray video discs can only output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP standard."

The only problem is that the HDMI cable needed to do this won't be included with your $600 PS3. That means, according to prices on places like Amazon, you'll have to shell out an extra $40 or more for the needed HD hook up. While it certainly may not be a big deal for someone who has the dough to spend $600 on a game console in the first place, for those who have been fillin' up the ol' piggy bank a penny at a time to buy this thing, it could just add to the stress and anger that's been building ever since the price was announced in May.

Sony said the $600 PS3 would play our content in 1080p. Maybe they should have made it clear we'd need an extra cable not included in the box to do so.

So how much more expensive does this make the PS3 if you really want to be able to play it in "TRUE High Def" (Sony's words, not mine)??

Sony FTL again :down

So the PS3 core system isn't even really "high def" according to Sony's own words? I guess they won't announce that next gen has "started" until PS4 releases at this rate...

Actually, the core PS3 isn't even CAPABLE of ever being in the Sony-defined "TRUE High Def". The PS3 is...but not until you spend even more money on top of the $600 for the cable. ;)

You do not need HDMI cables for games, or for movies until 5-6 years from now.

No, you don't need them. But you do if you want to use 1080p. And Sony have said that only 1080p is "true" high definition. So their new console isn't even high def? It's not even next gen, in their own words?

Riiiiiidge Raaaacer [/satanvoice]

You do not need HDMI cables for 1080P, it's possible to carry the signal over analogue cables. HDMI cables are true for true 1080P but the signal degredation is not even noticable. They do not down convert the signal.

Ahh! BUT! Remember that Sony is so adament about putting down 1080i/730p as "not being true High Def". And they're VERY adament about selling their system as a "TRUE High Def" system.

So if they're selling this as a TRUE 1080p system...one that ALREADY costs $600+tax...then they should have it be 1080p-capable right out of the box.

Imagine if Microsoft kept claiming that their XBOX360 was a HD game system, and their premium version didn't come with the Component cables. It'd be just the same.

From the very first post of this thread. It doesn't say games, just movies, so hey, maybe you're half right and 1080p games are possible without it...but I doubt it.

If you want to approach it from that perspective, what HD-Players that come out for 600 dollars offer you the cables as well? They are almost universally sold seperately, I'm pretty sure.

They aren't? I see no harm in including them with the premium package then, since it's angled towards the long term HD addopters anyway, I think.

The only HD-players $600 or higher are Blu-Ray players, and no, they don't come with HDMI cables either. But with it being only Blu-Ray players, that only further hurts their cause even more.

Sorry, what do you mean? The fact that the only 600 dollar (Blu Ray) player doesn't have HDMI cables when none of the others do is a detrement to them specifically?

I'm just saying that, if you're trying to compare the PS3 to other similarly-priced HD units, you're only left with other Blu-Ray players. Blu-Ray is basically Sony's baby (yes I know it's not JUST theirs, but they're the figurehead for BR), so if anything, it's telling me that BR is even less buy-worthy than previously thought, because any way you look at it, you're not getting everything you need to use it the way it's touted to be used, even though it's already extremely expensive.
