Punisher: War Journal

Rhino hasn't made a decent showing in ANY comic book in at least half a decade from my best estimate, and probably longer. He's been in official "jobber" status since the late 90's, at best. His day's done. :(

"Flowers for Rhino" in TANGLED WEB was his peak. No one has ever seen him as a character since. He's just a giveaway fight sequence for a few pages now. Everyone and anyone beats him. Even THE HAND have become more challenging (ugh, thanks, Bendis).

Him being in a wheelchair at Stiltman's memorial was just sad. Juggernaut was headed down that "jobber" path until he got repowered last month.

Juggernaut hasn't been a loser for as long as Rhino had. I mean he got spanked by Onslaught and still had some rep. Rhino's been a perennial punching bag for ages now. Juggernaut always had that unbeatable aura for a while, and could fight entire teams of X-Men. Rhino has gotten his ass kicked by damn near every superhero. Spidey, Hulk, Thing, Punisher, Nova, even newbies like Gravity.

By my reckonning, this dismissal of the Rhino began with J.M. DeMatteis back in Peter Parker: Spectacular Spide-Man #190, where we see Spider-Man completely man-handle Rhino with relative ease...this stuck me as odd, as DeMatteis was responsible for building UP Kraven The Hunter, another Spidey rogue, whom other writers had dismissed years before...

Apparently, Dematteis was unaware that Rhino actually split time between being a Spidey rogue and also an Incredible Hulk rogue as well. Hulk #218 shows Rhino derail a speeding freight train by hitting it head on. Im sorry, but a character like the Punisher using conventional weaponry should be no threat to The Rhino whatsoever, imo...

Anyway; Rhino's recent appearance over in Sensational Spider-Man seemed to somewhat restore him as a bit of a threat...unfortunately, that is being undermined at the same time over in PWJ...

Definitely. I mean, Rhino's like a 70+ ton tanker. He's been able to make Gray Hulk break a sweat, least for a few pages. He should be Spider-Man's equalivent of Juggernaut, a huge force that cannot be overcome by sheer brute force of many kinds, but instead he's just a jobber. And that needs to change. So long as writers keep treating rogues like this, the audiences will just want to see hero vs. hero events.

Didn't Rhino go through some kind of change where his face(what used to look human) resembled an actual rhino? I remember Juggs fighting him looking like that in an issue of Uncanny X-Men a few years back.

I don't know if he's actually gone through a change or if that stuff is all artistic interpretation. Originally, he was a Russian and spoke like one. Lately Marvel's been trying to pass him off as a random New York mook in a rhino supersuit, though.

Last issue was an odd read. And that is why I continue to read this fabulous book.
