Basically, this is a pyramid, each layer is one bigger than the one before. The start is the best guitarist, then the second and third, and so on. I've got the very top sorted, but I was wondering what people's suggestions were, as we come to appropraite desciosions, I'll edit the first post and let's see how far we can get!

HENDRIX
RORY GALLAGHER ----- CARLOS SANTANA
RICHIE HAVENS ------ ALVIN LEE ------ RICHARD THOMPSON

Jack White. Matt Bellamy. Eric Clapton.

I was thinking people like Plant and Richard thompson would be in the next row, I personally don't rate clapton, he is an average guitarist, his greatest piece is thought to be in leila, but actually Dwaine allman plays it!!!

Where is Page?

Well we've only done the first two rungs, I put him on the forth maybe, I thought the top three were common knowledge,

Not really. Hendrix is massively overrrated. He's ability to emulate the sounds of a dying whale however, are second to none.

He could get nay sound out of a guitar, he could do all the stuff other people do, but he prefered to push the boundaries of music and invent sounds that no-one else could come close to, I understand people don't like it, but for technical skill, he is the undisputed champion!

LOL.

And the Top Three should be Page, Hendrix & Clapton. Next would be Townshend, Keith Richards and Brian May.

clapton is an average guitarist, nothing more

Average? Hardly. He's come up with the some of the greatest riffs and solos in the history of recorded music. You must be able to come up with literally 100 better guitarists than Clapton if you think he's only average compared to the rest.

Oh, and throw in Stevie Ray Vaughn and Mick Taylor.

See, all I've heard is Hendrix marvelling in his own ridiculousness. I've never heard him just sit down and strum out a tune on an acoustic guitar. This is why I prefer guys like Paul Simon, George Harrison, Clapton etc. They can play the guitar. Hendrix played noises.

Dwain allman played the slide guitar in leila which clapton always gets credit for, you know why he played it? Becuase clapton wasn't good enough to play it!

I'm not even all that impressed with "Layla". I love the song, no doubt, but IMO the piano exit is far more impressive than Clapton's guitar work. Listen to "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Presence Of The Lord", "White Room" and just about every other song he's ever recorded and tell me he's average. You are sorely mistaken.

clapton at best would only appear in the 6th row down

Well, most people will probably disagree with you, so no harm done.

Cyrusbales, you're... well, if you can get around your soul crushing annoyingness, you're an okay guy.

But please don't start coming to community:csad:

I, too, wish I were an Oscar Meyer weiner.

I respect you, not just for your avvy! but I don't see why this thread is such a bad idea? some guitarists are clearly more technically skilled than others, I thought it would be fun to put it up, if anyone gets stressed or anything, they don't have to post

okay, any pyramid of guitarists starts with Chuck f**king Berry! the man invented rock and roll, and is the most influential guitarist of all time. no other guitarist mentiones in this thread would be the guitarist they are if it werent for chuck berry!

1) Plant? As in Robert Plant? As in the SINGER for Led Zeppelin? Why would he be on a GUITARIST pyramid?

2) Calling Clapton average is inane. By the age of twenty people were spraypainting that he was GOD all over London. You don't do that for an average or even a great guitarist. You do that for a future legend.

Yes, Duane* Allman played the slide parts in Layla* because Duane* was the greatest SLIDE guitarist to touch the instrument. Clapton is the greatest BLUES ROCK guitarist. Layla is by NO MEANS the be all end all of his work. Try listening to his Yardbirds stuff. Or more preferably his Cream era. Cream's cover of Crossroads is one of the greatest pieces of guitar work to ever be recorded.

This thread has done some good, it has made me break out my Clapton stuff and crank it.

Oh and my list

Eddie Van Halen
/\
/ \
Eric Clapton Allen Collins
