Come to think of it, why do they call her "The Black Orchid"? I mean she is neither African American(if she is, she is evidently very fair, enough to "pass" as Caucasian) or her costume is black(it's purple) It's as meaningless as Madame Rouge (which translates from the French as "Mrs Red"), the ductile, distaff member , late of the Brotherhood of Evil, whose costume is black, as is her hair( the only thing "red" about her is the colour of her lipsticksp assuming it isn't an allusion to her political views- which I doubt as she seems to have none).
Whatever the reasom she( The Black Orchid that is) is too intriguing a character to rusticate in DC comics limbo!

Well, there is a Black Canary and she's not black either. And her original cotume had more blue than black..but never mind >.<

As for the Black Orchid, The first one who was a very interesting character was killed off in a Mini-series written by Gaiman. The Second Black Orchid was made into a villianess of sorts and the third one who matured during the Second Black Orchids reign took over once the second one died *still fuzzy myself on all the details of that. I prefer the premise of the first one. Very cool undercover sorts*
The Second Black Canary I think had an ongoing for a while.

The one right now is aligned with the Shadowpact but has no major role in it.
She also appeared briefly in IC.

But the last two Orchids are more of an elemental type force. Rather than a P.I. one the first had *I still LOVE the first one*

After the flower?
A black Orchid is a deep purple flower.

Black Orchid was given a cameo in Infinite Crisis #6, where the Spectre is summoned.
