Queens Elementary School Adopts All-Vegetarian Menu

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/PS-24-Flushing-Queens-Elementary-School-All-Vegetarian-Menu--205458481.html

A Queens public school is one of the first in the nation to adopt an all-vegetarian menu, school officials said Tuesday.

P.S. 244 in Flushing has been serving tofu wraps and vegetarian chili since going all-veggie earlier this year, schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said during a lunchtime visit.

"I am proud of the students and staff for trailblazing this extraordinary path," Walcott said.

P.S. 244 opened in 2008 and houses just over 400 students in pre-kindergarten through third grade. The school, which wanted to offer the children healthy food options, started serving a vegetarian lunch three times a week and then increased it to four times a week before making the switch to an all-vegetarian menu every day.

It is the city's first all-vegetarian public school.

"We discovered early on that our kids were gravitating toward our vegetarian offerings, and we kept expanding the program to meet the demand," principal Robert Groff said.

Tuesday's menu included black beans and cheddar quesadillas served with salsa and roasted potatoes.

A staff member at the animal-welfare group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said he believes P.S. 244 may be the first all-vegetarian public elementary school in the nation.

"We think this is a really exciting development," said Ryan Huling, who coordinates PETA's work with colleges that serve vegetarian fare. "The school should be commended for providing students with low-fat, nutrient-packed brain food."

P.S. 244 is a zoned neighborhood school, so students who prefer meat-based meals would not be able to transfer out, nor would vegetarian children at other schools be able to transfer in.

"nutrient-packed brain food"

Sounds like animal protein.

No. But the evolution of our brain size is believed to have been a result of it.

The magic word, "It is believed" and it certainly suits the meat industry's financial interests too. No one else benefits from eating animal flesh. On the contrary it is the cause for many health issues.

No wonder why so many athletes, actors and famous people in general have gone Vegan in the recent years. You will be amazed at the amount of propaganda the public is fed regarding meat and dairy, if you check it for yourself.

I don't feel any school has the right to force a belief/lifestyle on a student. And by only providing food for that lifestyle they are in fact doing just that.

What the kids don't know is that the food comes from Soylent.

This is totally absurd.

I have no interest in checking. I'm a carnivore. :oldrazz:

I see plenty of propaganda from vegetarians and vegans too. Whatever happened to a proper balance of meat, vegetables, fruits and grains? Oh, that's right, everyone decided their particular point of view trumped everyone else's and decided to cut out whatever "looked" bad to them.

Stop promoting your favored diet as if it is the magic bullet health solution. It's not. It never will be. All vegetable diets are just as bad as all meat diets. The reality is it's ******** and mostly backed by groups like PETA who are just bat**** insane.

Look at the Inuit/Eskimo or any other high-protein diet society. Remarkably they did just fine without a single vegetable in their diet. The real problem with meat today is the processed variety. Same with the vegetables. It does you no good if it's over processed. That is the real issue, not the meat itself.

But I doubt you'll actually accept meat is healthy if it is unprocessed and properly prepared. You'll just go on about the touted superiority of vegetables, right?

I'm in no way a vegan or vegetarian but the fact that any School is transitioning their "meals" to healthier ones is a step that every School Public and Private should take.

My ancestors tried living solely on the potato.

Funny story about that...

How about this? They offer a vegetarian meal and a regular meal that everyone else can eat if they want? Choice. Such a novel concept.

I don't see why this is a controversy. Although I disagree with the vegetarian dietary lifestyle, eating a salad for one meal a day isn't going to kill you, and considering the average diet of the American non-vegetarian, it will be extremely helpful.

If you object to your kids not being fed meat for one meal in a day, or think this is some sort of conspiracy against you, please pull your head out of your ass and wipe the **** from your face before speaking again.

Well the inhumane sloughtering of inoccent and cute animals, the forced separation from calves from their mother and killing afterwards in filthy and disease spreading enviroment certainly is not some kind of propaganda, but a very real thing. And I prefer the "propaganda" of a plant based food that promotes ecological behavior and compassion towards every living being instead of consuming the rotten flesh of a dead body or wearing it."

Eskimos NEVER thrived as a civilization and most of them are obese ,sick and fat. The humans who thrived were the ones who have been eating VEGAN HIGH CARB DIE. Plus they didn't have plant based food choices due to the ice. I mean people would even become cannibals to survive if there wasn't any plant or animal around them.
Do you realize that it is impossible for meat to be unprocessed and clean enough for the billions of people to consume it? It isn't affordable from a financial standpoint and not practical enough.

But I doubt you'll actually accept meat is healthy if it is unprocessed and properly prepared. You'll just go on about the touted superiority of vegetables, right?

Yeah I will never accept meat is healthy. Not after I stopped eating it compared to fruit and vegetables.

The only thing I object to is PETA being involved.

Yep. Full blown vegan soap box rant. That didn't take long. :whatever:

I'm a vegetarian but I understand that others would disagree with that diet. The only way this would be bad news is if the students objected to a vegetarian menu anyway, but it seems like they didn't so I don't really see any reason to complain

Describing real facts and events is "a vegan soap box rant"?

That's not all you're doing. You've gone into "attack the filthy meat eaters" mode.

As I see it, this "vegetarian menu" is a way of providing a streamlined menu that can accomodate as many students as possible. If you concede the point that the state has a responsibility to feed other people's children (which is debatable, but that is a separate debate) then a vegetarian menu makes sense from an efficiency point of view.

If you are a meat eater to the point where you won't eat anything that doesn't have meat in it, then you are killing yourself. Ask Brock Lesnar what a perforated intestine feels like.

I knew I kept this for a reason.

Really I went into "attack the filthy meat eaters" mode? :doh:Well, at least I didn't post an ironic photo which has absolutely nothing to do with the post.:whatever:

That digestive system graph makes no sense. Of course we have grinding molars and a long intestine. We're OMNIVORES! Not pure carnivores.

Sorry, but just because people aren't vegan doesn't make them uninformed and in need of your help. Honestly it's good that you're happy with your dietary choices. It's not for everyone though. You're going to need to accept that someday or it'll drive you crazy.

I don't want to help anyone nor I have time to waste on "post rants". I just posted something relevant to the thread.

Yeah I may end up crazy. That's one negative thing when being conscious and aware of the world you live in and trying constantly to make a difference.
