Batman Begins Question about the scene where crane gets drugged

Exactly what is it that he sees batman as? It definitely looks like it could be some kind of demon or something but I've always been interested in knowing exactly what it is.

One thing I really liked about getting to see Cranes fear is that it reminded me of the 1st time Scarecrow was in the Animated series and when Batman used the fear gas on him and he saw Batman as a large demon. When I saw it in theaters it brought a smirk to my face

I beileve Nolan was quoted once as saying that the animated series was one of his sources of inspiration. I suspect that's exactly where this idea came from.
