I'm not sure where a thread like this would go, so I went to where I at least thought it would. Anyway, I might be headed to NYC Comic Con next month and I've never been to any Comic Con before. So I have a few questions...

1)Does it cost anything (other than time) for artists' autographs?

2)How many things can you get an artist to sign...e.g. I want to get a book and a shirt signed by an artist. Can I have two things signed at one time?

3)Anything especially important to do/not to do at the convention?

Sorry if these are n00b questions, but I don't want to look like an idiot, even if the facts say differently :yay:

Thanks.

1) If they charge for an autogrpah, that guy is an *******. They may charge for a sketch, but an autograph, no.

2) Dont go overboard, I always say 3-4 things is an acceptable number. And really depends on the line.

3) I'd just check out the floor and go to the panels.

I'll be there, too

1. Like DP said, if they charge for an autograph, they're an ass. The ONE time a comic artist charged for a signature (it was Spain, doubt anyone here knows him) I just walked away, don't waste your time with them. That being said, don't be a dick and bring 50 million comics for people to sign. I've seen people be nice and do it anyway, but many will refuse and you really shouldn't be an ass like that. Limit it to five books per writer or artists. Yes, a T Shirt and one book are more than acceptable.

Artists WILL charge for sketches, however, and everyone has their own rates, on the rare exceptions they'll do a "quickie" sketch for you that takes all of 30 seconds for free.

The one set of people who will charge for signatures are those in the lame celebrities corner. These include Lou Ferrigno, various professional wrestlers, the guys who were in the Chewbacce, Darth Vader, R2D2 etc. costumes, porno actresses, and star trek extras. They tend to ask $20 for a signed glossy photo of themselves. Really, you should not care about these people anyway.

3. Lots. If you're over 21, go to the after parties. Most importantly, BE YOURSELF! Don't get star struck. Compliment someone on their work, but if you act normal you can actually have conversations. These are real people with friends and family, too.

F*** lou...... anyways, last year was an atroscity.Hopefully things are better.no one could get in,no tickets at the door, booth robberies(due to people not being able to get to there booths because of the terrible line managment.) and so on and so fourth.

Im going.

It's my first really big convention, so im really excited.

PLUS; they gave me the option to upgrade my ticket to a VIP Package which includes a meet and greet with Stan Lee, which i jumped at!

So yeah, i cant wait!

fantastic! we should meet up Captain

When two mods mingle, I feel a tingle.

Thanks all for the comments! If all goes well, I'll be attending. One more quick stupid question:

If I, say, have a something black being autographed, will the artist usually have like a silver marker or something so that it shows up? Sorry that it's a really weird question. :woot:

I'd love to meet Stan Lee! I knew he was going to be there, but I did not know if the opportunity would be there for me to meet him. Is this VIP option available to everyone when you buy tickets? And, if so, how much more does it cost?

Man, they're charging a LOT.

I ordered my tickets online about a month and a half ago, as i dont live in New York State, and there was an offer to let me know when any opportunities come along to upgrade. Last week, i got the offer for the Stan Lee meet and greet, but it was 500 bucks. :wow: Now , besides the guarantee of meeting Stan, that also includes a bunch of other crap; A Venom mini bust, a World War Hulk poster autographed by Stan, and several other items that i forget at the moment, but 500 is still a lot, at least for ME. (plus the cost of air fare, hotels, and my wife and daughter shopping it up allover Manhatten <groan :csad: >...

But still; It's an opportunity to meet Stan freakin' Lee, which is a life long ambition of mine, so i went for it. :word:

Just go to the website and see if any spots are still available, provided you got the cash.

Since I live in the York, Maybe I'll go one of these years.

I'm trying to save up money for Comic-Con this year. I may have to hitchhike there or make a road trip put of it.

How much do these things cost?

Theyre relatively cheap in it themselves.

$45 for a weekend pass apparently.

That's not SO bad. Maybe in a few years...

San Diego is like $70 for the 4 days. Ah, San Diego....I'll see you soon.

Be sure to get something signed by BKV and send it to me.....:csad:

Yeah, San Diego and Orlando are the two biggest, right?

What's next after that? New York? I hear Chicago and Detroit throw down pretty heavy as well.

San Diego is the biggest, I dont know about Orlando, Megacon is big, but not San Diego big, and I think a Wizard World rolls through there as well. Theres another big Con but the name escapes me. After that, Wizard World Anywhere is as big as it gets.

Orlando? nono, Chicago has always traditionally been the biggest after SD, as far as I understand it.

but after last year, this new NYC show Comic Con is running has the potential to be 2nd

TECHNICALLY, though, San Diego is only the third biggest convention in the world, but the #1 and 2 spots are held by conventions in Japan and France, which are two completely different comic markets

Detroit is Motor City Comic Con, and is decently sized, but If I'm not mistaken, it's actually held twice a year, which has the effect of lessening attendance. That, and I don't know how much the city has to offer, and I've never seen any really huge names on their guest lists.

I believe there's something of a scandal going on at the moment with concerns over Wizard drastically overstating the attendance for their various conventions. The Philly show was the smallest I've ever seen it this year, yet they reported record attendance (or something, I'm hearing these things through the grape vines, not doing actual research). Which is really too bad, I liked having a semi decent show right down the street from me. I got to take Dan Slott out with some friends to my favorite Italian restaurant, which was amazingly cool

Are you doing the Stan Lee meet?

not for $500, thank you very much, even with the extras (unless my numbers come up for the Powerball tonight). I'll find an excuse to run into you, though. You've got a cellphone, right?

DP, I'll see you at SD

oh, one other important tid-bit for con rookies - BRING GEL INSOLES! your feet WILL be aching by the end, or at least they will be if you're doing it right

Dude, I'm so pumped I'm going too and Tophat491 is going too! Is anyone else going in a costume? I'm trying to go as Wiccan (from YA's) and he's going as Gravity.
