Racelift a comic character

[The Question]

Inspired by the string of racially charged arguments that have popped up on these forums in the past couple of years.

If you were going to cast popular superheroes with non-white actors (assuming you're like me and you're in favor of that sort of thing), who would you cast? What minority actors do you think possess the right qualities for your favorite super hero or super villain who they'll probably never have the chance to play?

Me, I've been in favor of Will Smith for Superman for a while now. As he's matured into his 40s, he's demonstrated that he can convey a truly beautiful balance of charm, earnestness, vulnerability, and inner strength that anybody playing Clark Kent needs. I Am Legend wasn't a great film (mostly for it's lousy last-minute edit ending), but in that he really conveyed the kind of driven, tortured loneliness combined with genuine resolve to fix problems and make the world a better place, all with an appropriate dash of wit and charm, that I want to see in my Superman.

What do you guys think?

Will Smith is too big of a name to play a CBM based Superhero, so one was made for him in Hancock.

Plus he's too damn expensive.

All studios making Marvel & DC movies are making casting decisions that aren't accurate to the source and are all receiving backlashes.

I wonder how many in-accurate castings it will take for it to not become an issue.

and as for who i would want to play Superman it would be this guy!

I generally prefer for major comic characters to look as closely to the comic as possible. Just my preference. I only think that raceswapping is okay when that particular actor is just so perfect for the role.

That being said...Most of the time i prefer to keep the races exactly the same, (and don't understand people that prefer race changes)

Michael B Jordan will be an amazing Human Torch as well.

This is a good opportunity to bring up a problem on these boards. People try to make you feel bad if you prefer one of your favorite fictional characters to retain the same physical appearance that they have always had. That's unacceptable. It's not racist if we prefer our favorite characters to look the way we are used to.

This wouldn't be a discussion if DC and Marvel weren't completely dropping the ball with minority characters.

It's not racist if we prefer our favorite characters to look the way we are used to.

True. But when written out it often comes off that way.

I too would prefer them as close to the comic as possible. I think everyone does.

But when a casting is finalised or a costume is finalised, that's that. Complaining about it won't change anything.

I'm neither for nor against it. It all depends upon the actor and character.

Otto Octavius is Middle Eastern and Jewish in my Spider-Man Alternate Universe fic. Like Spectacular, I'll be changing the race of the Fancy Dan, Mark Raxton, Kenny Kong, Roderick Kingsley and Jean DeWolffe.

And I'll have a gender lift; Mac Gargan is female.

My go-to example: Daredevil. Matt could be black or hispanic, and he would work exactly the same as he does now. So there's no reason to not cast whichever actor you want; his story works fine for any race. I'd keep him Catholic, though. *That* is actually more relevant to his characterization than his race.

Here's one I've been thinking of for a while: Daniel Dae Kim for Magneto. If there ever comes a time where Marvel feels they must retcon Magneto's origin to a different historical genocide so he's not, like, 200 years old while Xavier is just in his 50s, making him Cambodian and casting Kim would be a great choice. I think he's got the chops for the dark tortured anti-hero and driven political radical.

I would love to see a Black or Hispanic Captain Marvel/Shazam. It would be a way to lessens all the Superman comparisons.
