The hotly tipped future talent of the minute is Federico Alvarez, a 30 year old Uruguyan behind the YouTube smash sci-fi short called Panic Attack - which you can see below the break. So far, Alvarez seems to be following a very similar racing line to the one Neill Blomkamp has roared around over the last few years.
Whereas Blomkamp’s breakthrough short was Alive in Joburg, a shaky-cam alien invasion picture set in South Africa, Alvarez has now made his crash landing with Panic Attack… a shaky-cam alien invasion picture set in Uruguay. The latter features rather more giant robots, however, which you may see as a very good thing.
Blomkamp’s protector/mentor in making the transition to feature length filmmaking was Peter Jackson, while Alvarez has in turn been taken under the wing of Sam Raimi. Apparently the two have already spoken at length and the expectation is that Raimi will help Alvarez make the transition to feature filmmaking without too much interference from suits and money men.

According to a report in El Pais (via Film Junk), the film that Alvarez has signed on to make for Ghost House will also feature giant robots. He’s working with a budget of $30 to $40 million and has a $1 million fund just to fund script development. There’s apparently perks too - Alvarez, his girlfriend and also his co-writer Rodolfo Sayagués have all been relocated to new apartments in LA and given cars. Reading all of this, I had an uneasy feeling that either Alvarez has been speaking too freely or that the El Pais journalist has betrayed his confidence because we rarely hear this kind of detail.
According to Alvarez, he and Raimi share a vision of what the feature film should be and this is why he was happy to sign with Ghost House. It seems that he didn’t even keep his appointments to meet with “Dreamworks, Fox, Warner and The Weinstein Company”.

Um. Other than "aliens" and a shakey cam, this is NOTHING like D-9.

that short was pretty awesome, looking forward to the feature. The music during the robot attack sounds familiar though... was that from 28 days later?

That short film was pretty cool...and its giant robots. I need to see a trailer first but it sounds interesting.

Im glad District 9 has inspired the film industry to take more risks and be a little more creative

Hmm. That was quite good. It could be great if expanded properly and have a great story which hopefully is nothing like D9.

The short bores me....:o

Mainly because, i've seen it all before. Its basicly anything Neil did....shaky cam, desaturated, ect....I dont know....it wouldnt make an interesting movie imo.

That's on a small budget Celtic. You're basing an opinion just on a four minute video on a small budget focusing on one thing. Considering what little recources you have, it's quite good.

That scene could easily be in the film as some sort of opening destruction like in War of the Worlds and then have this whole plot surrounding it. I hope it's interesting enough.

To me, this just looks like another "more updated" War of the Worlds.

I'm going to pass until something official comes, say a teaser.

Budget is irrelevent. Its District 9 with more robots. Shaky cam and all. I'm sick to death of that crap. Its fine every once in a while...but eh.

way to be optimistic LOLOL

this is ntohing like d9 this did'nt even tell a story

Alien invasion/ Aliens living here.

Shaky desaturated Cam/Shaky desaturated cam.

Usage of video cams/ Usage of video cams.

Same movie. I want something different plz.

And how come only the filmmakers with fantastic special effects get to meet Sam Raimi...:(

i think the D9 connection is based on the film being a low budget sci fi short from a fresh new director that is now being made into a feature film with a big name attached.

and FFS.. we are finally getting some new films from some fresh people and everyone has to whinge and ***** about it.

Its either this or more michael bay sequels which we know are ****.

Give them a chance!

Yeah, this is getting in the right direction in an aspect. D9 made studios realize you can do these sort of things on smaller budgets and have original ideas and *gasp* are successful.

I'll wait and see. This is only a four minute video. Hopefully when the extend the whole plot, it's something of its own.

It got me thinking of doing my own alien invasion film. Though it would be the aftermath of one. Pretty much The Road but with aliens.

Could be decent, but it will never be as good as District 9 was. That film was a once in a decade type thing.

You can't spell worth a ****. Please leave the internets. Read a book. Get hooked on phonics. any thingis better then sitting around typing nonsense.

Ghost House that has me scared right there. They haven't made a movie wroth the film its printed on yet.

Love Raimi but GhostHouse has been a bust.

Good luck to that young filmmaker. Hopefully this is his big break.

I love Raimi as well but the movies he produces are terrible
-Boogeyman trilogy
-The Grudge trilogy
-The Messangers 1 and 2
- Darkman 3 (Darkman 2 aint bad for a dtv movie)
-Rise
-30 Days of Night (pretty movie though)
-Timecop
