it is hi-larious to me how much people praise the original superman flicks. okay, i understand many of you grew up with them and love them for sentimental reasons, but give me a break. i saw STM for the first time a few years ago (when i was about 20), and it was pretty much laughably bad. lois's poem? spinning the world? everything about luthor? please. i could tell just from the trailers that SR would be on a whole other planet.

Seriously SR is the definative Superman film...wow

Its the one live action interpretation of Superman you can watch all the way through with anyone in the world and not be embarassed. It maintained its respect and dignity all the way through and thats all I wanted.

It didnt have the 70s camp, cheesiness or Smallville's ridiculous storytelling and painfully obvious and embarassing sexploitation.

It was Superman done with dignity so I put SR as #1

Laugh all you want. It's a great movie that holds up very well today and still puts other comic book movies like Spider-Man to shame. I watched it again last night, but this time with a friend...and she loved it.

Obviously if it is praised so "much" and by so many people, there's something there to justify it.

i don't think it holds up well at all. from an unbiased perspective (i.e. from the perspective of someone that has no emotional interest invested in it), i'd put it right around Hellboy's level. it has just too many embarassingly corny/stupid/plain old bad moments for it to deserve such praise. Hackman's Luthor is easily one of the least threatening villains in any revered movie i've ever seen. i watched it with my girlfriend, parents, sister, and her fiance a few months ago (just so they'd have some good background for seeing SR), and our living room was like an episode of MST3K by the time it was over.

But the sheer presence of Reeve seems to smooth everything out and you just watch him be a perfect Superman.

The sheer presence of Routh will make him the perfect Superman for this generation. He was impressive.

If theres one great thing to come out of this, it was Brandon Routh.

i think that's the problem. it's an alright kid's movie, but everybody who was an awe-struck kid when it came out is now an adult who still has a kid-level opinion of it. i admit that i'm the same way with Batman -- i grew up watching it and have a hard time admitting that it has any flaws at all. but the problems with STM aren't just characterization problems or translation-from-comics-to-film problems, they're just outright poor cinematic choices. Reeve was charming, but lord knows "good actor" does not equal "good movie"

Returns , for me, is just better in every way. the original was great (i didn't like superman 2 very much) but they're both obvious products of their time. hopefullly Returns will be more timeless... i think it will be.
