I can't rate Pirates of the Caribbean. The Hobbit movies take Middle-Earth down, sadly.

This is too hard!
MCU
Middle-Earth
Star Wars
Pirates
Potter

The first 4 are my favorite film franchises of all time. And I've just never been into harry potter.

Movie wise, I think Middle Earth has Star Wars beat. I think the Hobbit movies are quite a bit better than the Star Wars prequels. And the LotR trilogy is much better than the Star Wars OT, imo. And that's not easy for me to say because I love the OT.

I know that a few of these seem to be at an advantage with having more entries than the others (Harry Potter has almost double the movies that Pirates has).

So I guess rate these based on which ones are the most consistently entertaining and well-made.

I forgot to factor in the Star Wars prequels in my ranking. I suppose Middle-Earth and Star Wars are on the same level in my eyes.

Do you think the Hobbit films are worse than the prequels, or equally as bad?

I can't really say. There are some really cool moments in Revenge of the Sith so that kind of redeems Star Wars compared to the Hobbit trilogy.

Separate the L.O.T.R. from the Hobbit films and Lord of the Rings wins easily.

The Hobbit films were a BIG mistake!

Peter Jackson did extended versions of all these films and the Rings extended versions were brilliant. In a perfect universe I would like to think that he has enough footage in the 'can' to give us ONE FILM of The Hobbit as Tolkien wrote it - get rid of the five armies, Tauriel, etc. and just tell Tolkien's classic children's tale. I think that this could be done in one three hour film.

The Hobbit films aren't as bad as the SW prequels, but they definitely bring down that franchise's stock in a big way for me. Without them, I'd probably put LotR on top because the OT is about as quality-consistent as they come, but as it is...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Star Wars
Middle-Earth
Harry Potter
Pirates of the Caribbean

That said, I'm more excited about new Star Wars installments than any other franchise in existence, so there's that.

Star Wars
Middle Earth
Harry Potter
MCU
Pirates.

Some of these are odd picks as they pit mega-franchises (MCU & Middle-Earth) against regular franchises (SW, HP & POTC)

Pirates/Star wars at a tie.
I've never cared for Star Wars. I was introduced to the franchise with the prequels, and I've never been able to get that bad taste out of my mouth.

A franchise is a franchise, "mega" or not.
You classify Middle earth as a "mega" franchise, but Harry Potter as a "regular" one, even though Harry Potter has more films. It's a useless distinction.

Middle-Earth (The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings); some problems with the film franchise, but you cannot understate the importance of this subject matter

Marvel Cinematic Universe; for the sheer audacity of such an attempt, and the generally consistent quality of the individual film

Star Wars: The prequels and many questionable offshoots from the original trilogy damage the ranking (come back in 10 years to see where this sits in comparison to the DCU franchise)

Harry Potter: basically a decent children's book series that was turned into a film franchise that gives book fans everything they want but offers little for anybody else

Pirates of the Caribbean: could have actually beat Harry Potter if the last couple of movies were better; admirable for turning a seemingly unfilmable property (an amusement park ride) and an impossible genre (the pirate movie) into a major franchise

MCU - All my faves, changing the way moves are made, highly anticipated.
Star Wars - Really the grand-daddy of them all in a way. Straightforward but imaginative. A really beautiful franchise all in all. Somewhat anticipated.
Harry Potter - Beloved, smart and heartwarming in its own way, but not entirely my cup of tea.
Middle Earth - Very much not my cup of tea. Hard not to admire for plain old quality though.
Pirates of the Caribbean- Meh all around for me. Lots of fun antics, none that I particularly cared about.

There should be a poll for favorite of these 5 franchises.

1. Star Wars: Has the two best films by far on the list. Prequels are no good, but the OT started it all. The series is about to span its 5 decade, with no signs of slowing down.

2. Harry Potter: By far the most consist series on the list. Not one bad film, and a couple very good ones.

3. Indy: How the heck do you leave this off? :funny:

4. Middle-Earth: Fellowship is a landmark, TTT is a worthy sequel, and none of the films are bad. I'd take all the Hobbit films over RotK.

5. Marvel: Love it, more for the universe building then the individual films. That being said, TWS and GotG are great, and I have plenty of time for the Avengers, Iron Man, Thor and TFA.

6. PotC: We will always have the first film.
