Rashomon Remake Moving Forward
Source: Variety.com September 22, 2008

Variety reports that Harbor Light Entertainment and Japanese company Lotus have decided to move forward with a remake of legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's classic crime-drama Rashomon with plans to release it in 2010 as part of the 100th Anniversary celebration of Kurosawa's birth. The new version will be tentatively titled "Rashomon 2010" and while the story will still be about a court case surrounding the rape of a woman and the murder of her husband, in this case, it will take place in modern-day America. This is the company's second attempt at getting this project off the ground after a failed attempt in 2001.

The film will be accompanied by an animated film based on an Kurosawa's unproduced 1977 script The Masque of Black Death, a Russia-based film about a disease that kills most of the population in the early 20th Century. Originally planned as a project for veteran anime filmmaker Osamu Tezuka, the project is also planned for a 2010 release.

Seems like a really odd choice to remake, to me.

It only works if it is done in the 40s noir.
