Armie Hammer, Lily James to Star in New 'Rebecca' Adaptation for Netflix

Working Title is behind the new adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s gothic classic.
Netflix and Working Title are teaming on a new adaptation of one of old Hollywood's most beloved mysteries: Rebecca.

Armie Hammer and Lily James are set to star as the newly married couple at the center of the gothic thriller based on Daphne du Maurier’s classic.

The 1938 novel tells the story of a young woman who, on arriving at her husband's imposing family estate on a bleak English coast, finds herself battling the shadow of his dead first wife, the mysterious Rebecca, whose legacy continues to haunt the house.

English helmer Ben Wheatley, who worked with Hammer on the shoot-'em-up action comedy Free Fire, will direct from a screenplay by Kingsman writer Jane Goldman. Working Title’s Eric Fellner will produce, along with Tim Bevan and Nira Park.

In 1940, Alfred Hitchcock directed the preeminent adaptation of Rebecca, which was produced by David O. Selznick and starred Lawrence Oliver and Joan Fontaine. At the time, The Hollywood Reporter's review called the pic "overlong" but went on to say it is an "artistic masterpiece." Rebecca would go on to earn Oscar nominations in nearly every major category and eventually took home the 1941 best picture statuette.

Joan Fontaine is one of my least-favorite of Hitchcock's Hollywood leading ladies, so I'm interested in seeing James in this role, and I like Jane Goldman. But Ben Wheatley and Armie Hammer? Eh. Hoping for the best.

Hammer and Netflix?.
This is gonna be such a flop it Will bring forth the Apocalypse

That duo ain't exactly the acting equivalent of Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. You can't really top Hitchcock.

I love the story (my favourite adaptation is the 1979 BBC TV version with Jeremy Brett as Maxim de Winter). I like Lily James, not so sure about Hammer though.

I've been waving it since Reaper!

Why was this allowed to happen?

Let me guess, gratuitous sex scenes defacing and devaluing Manderley. Hitch and du Maurier are turning in their graves.

Who’s playing Mrs. Danvers?

Here for Lily James. Haven’t seen the director’s previous work so hope he does a good job.

I'm interested to see Lily James in this, but don't really feel Hammer was all that suitable.

Looks great. Lily James looks lovely, like Cinderella with short hair, and Kristin Scott Thomas looks sinister as Kara Danvers's mother.

I’m a fan of Lily James too so will check this out.

Hammer is allegedly pretty bad in this. I also can't believe that one Doctor actor who looks like the dude from Mask (1985) cheated on Lily James with Claire Foy. Eh.

I am shocked Armie might give a wooden performance in something like this!

Is Lily James with Chris Evans or someone like that now?
